Update on the 500 CMT 3/30/13 Finally got a nice day to get a flight check out on my newly built 500. Did a test hover inside some time ago. Well second battery about 11 minutes in the air the tail shaft right side spacer and or bearing gives up and I lose the tail. heard it go and was heading back for a landing when I lost tail control. Got it down softly but the skids grabbed (it was spinning) the concrete and it tipped hitting bladed. No the belt was not too tight, I guess just ****ty bearings tail shaft. Losing a tail is a big one so you might consider getting better tail parts right off the bat. Ordered a new Align tail shaft and new bearings MR684ZZ 2 sets one for tail and one the tail drive gear assembly. Hate to lose tail!!!

BEFORE YOU SPEND ONE DIME ON HOBBY KING KITS GO TO HELIFREAK CHAT OR ANY OTHER CHAT ROOM AND LEARN THAT THEIR HELI KITS ARE GARBAGE. I HAVE 5 YEARS OF BUILDING AND PROGRAMMING HELI'S. I THOUGHT THAT I COULD SAVE SOME MONEY. THEY DO NOT WARRANTY THEIR GARBAGE WHICH MAKES IT THAT MUCH WORSE NEWBY'S SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM HOBBY KING PERIOD. ASK AROUND AND YOU WILL SEE FOR YOUR SELVES. how is it garbage? i'm not saying it isn't but i thought to myself "garbage is a very vague term i wonder if he could give some good advice on (what makes it garbage)". or in other words what parts are bad on it, what should they be replaced with, or what heli kit one should buy instead that isn't so hard on the wallet.
 ikarre 12 points
When we have to say nothing it is better to keep silent!!! I have all the kits HK 250 / 450 / 500 / 550 and 600, they fly all perfectly. It is just necessary to realize some small modifications to enhance reliability, but nothing very important. When we have several years of practice Copter, we must know how to make that... Personally, I am not trapped by the system and when I fly it is with a quiet mind, because I prefer to lose 300 USD that 1000!! We have no same values. Thank you HK who allows all people like me he can fly without counting(mattering)! For others, return on your forums and at ALIGN make you pluck!

is this a good beginner heli?
 Jay D 30 points
It is much more stable than a 450 and is easier to see. It is is a little bit more expensive than a 450, but to answer your question, yes.
 rafelo 59 points
You need a stable heli to begin.A little heli little stable a big heli big stable and more expensive.I think to begin needs a big heli and a experimented pilot that helps you.
xwr3ckx  22 points - 2/14/2013

I went with the HKS-9257 and the Ga-250 mini mems gyro with no problems so far they seem to work well together just remember to make sure your using a digital tail servo and keep the servo speed under .1.

Qual o modelo de SERVO e GYRO/RX que necessita para voar?
What's SERVO and GYRO models for assembly my heli?
 rafelo 59 points

O heli tem uma gualidade muito boa e vem com a maioria dos parafusos com trava rosta, a qualidade do mesmo melhorou muito, me falaram que eu ia ter que trocar peã*s dele por align mas ao abrir a caixa e examinar o mesmo vi que nã*o precisa trocar nada, vou fazer voos esporte com ele. you will need three cyclic servos, one tail servo, 80A ESC, 500 brushless motor, headlocking gyro, and 6S 3000 mah lipo battery, plus a 6ch radio and receiver, and if you don't have a charger you will need one of those to. i would suggest the IMAX charger. hope this helps :)

Have anyone tried to mount larger blades on this heli? 450mm or 460mm? If you did then share your results and where you got the blades from.. I am currently searching for larger blades
 help me 7 points
nope, are your blades not producing enough lift? I don't know for sure, but i think if you got larger blades it would reduce the motor power, and increase the torque resulting in needing a longer tail boom, then you would need more power. i would suggest if you want larger blades or a larger heli go with a 550-600, I've heard a lot of good storys about them, i might get one soon.

Procure por "garypuppa" and "building-the-trex500" em Google, para um "tour" de montagem.
Procure por "TRex 500" plus "manual" para um manual na web. Boa montagem!

HK500CMT few servos required, and with that specification, to search for and apply?. I'ma newbie, and I need to give me a guide, I will not buy things I do not serve, or end up with the surprise that I needed something. Help!
 Josias 9 points
I recommend before buying, talk personally with pilots esperientes of their city. They will help you decide the best equipment to get started.
 Johan 15 points
Try the Turnigy MG930 Digital Metal Gear Servo 3.6kg They work very well on the cyclic of the heli. I would recommend any Futaba gyro 401 servo and higher.

I don't see a HK-500CMT in the spare parts section, only HKT500, HK500GT and HKJ500... Which one should i get my spare parts from?
 StevenC 556 points
Both HK500CMT and HK500GT are the same. They both share the same parts. The only diffrence in the kit is that the GT version has some plastic parts while CMT has metal instead. But they are prefectly interchangeable.
 Kazi 3 points
get the 500GT, i just ordered my spares the other day basically the cmt is the all metal vrsion of the gt, so when u go to the gt section it's all the same part as the cmt. As for the HKJ500 thats a completely diffrent helicopter.
 Kelly 3 points
I would not bother with this for that much shipping buy the align trex 500 with all the good align electronics less the radio they sell for $499.00 With shipping costs like you have it will cost too much to fix everything that doesn't work on it.

hi dear iam from indonesia.. i want buy this heli kit, but for first shipping maks to indonesia is $75.. and this price is $99.99.. is there any other way that I can buy this heli kit???
 StevenC 556 points
Did you choose registered international shipping? That should be around $29-30.
 Dheeo 3 points
sorry.. the shipping is $23 but I mean for the purchase or reservation to Indonesia maksimum is $75.. so i can`t buy this kit.. :(

Hello everyone!

Im about to place an order for a this heli, but after reading some of the discussions, im a bit concerned because of several people pointing out that their tailboom is to long for the belt? Is this fixed now?

Also, ima bit confused about the servos, it is minis for the cyclic, but will a futaba 9254 fit on the tail without modifying anything?

 afird 71 points
Mine is on the way home. didn't know it until read some of the reviews. anyways, i guess it's not a big deal where people suggest to cut it and shortening it.
 Daniel 6 points
Cool! Hope you have luck with yours. What servos did you choose?
 Kazi 3 points
As per the tail boom it is a few milimeters too long. If you have a dremel, you can grond down the end.DO NOT grind the area where the tail boom meets the frame(there is a notch that fits into boom housing). So make sure the end your are grinding down is the end with the tail rotor. Also the Futaba 9254 should fit fine without any modification needed.
 jeang 21 points
got mine about 3 weeks ago,u cant beat the price its a awesome deal.had the boom problem, just use a pipe cutter and cut off a few mm,no biggie..this thing flys great.I went with the tarot FBL head and install the 3 axi tarot unit..one word..WOW!!alot of fun to fly.im up to 25 flight now with no problem.nice machine.JUst go thrue everything ,every bolts make sure there loctite on metal part and u should have a good bird.

 afird 71 points
Hi Daniel, Im using Futaba S9254 as rudder servo. Great piece from HK anyways.
 Kelly 3 points
I used a chop saw to cut the tail boom off was over kill had to sand down the burs but no problem after that. Cut the tail rotor end not the frame notch end the tail boom has a clamp it does not have to be against the stop on the inside of the tail rotor. After I built mine if I did it again I would just buy the $499 kit from align it is everything except a radio.
smartguy  268 points - 2/23/2012

what is the servos ?
And how many i need ?
 afird 71 points
It needs in total of 4 servos. 3 for cyclic and 1 for tail. mine, use futaba s9254 on tail and 3x align ds520 on cyclic. (search for mini servo class)
 jeang 21 points
I have in mine 3 hitec 225mg on cyclic 1 x futaba 9257 on tail...works great

my question is which differs from the other helicopter 500 (HK-500GT 3D Electric Helicopter Kit (includes blades and extras)) which is in u $ s 65.95? that the two said to bring the blades and accessories?
 Kazi 3 points
There are a few differences, the GT model ($65.95) the tail box, blade grip is plastic. also the washout arm is plastic as well. With the CMT model ($99.99) it's all meta and much better build quality and also the frame is carbon fiber unlike the GT, which is made from soft metal. As for blades and accessories you get the same things blades, hardware, blade holders that's it.

do i need micro servos for this heli or normal ones?
 Steemo 21 points
"mini" servos, on cyclic no more than 15x36mm these ones fit http : / / www . hobbyking . com www.link the spaces

13T but if you have a Typhoon 500 the and a 6s batt the chart says you could get a high head speed. Would a 12T or even an 11T be safer?

Will it fit two 2200mAH 3S 25C Turnigy batteries ? I have 450 heli and more than a couple of 3S batteries. Thinking of getting a 500 class but don't want to spend more on 6S batteries.
Will appreciate your answers.

yes, work fine.

What is the max rotor head speed to be used on this heli. Can you use the same as the Trex 500. I have replaced main shaft and feathering shaft with Align, and using 13T pinion with Turnigy H3126 1300KV motor
 Mrcio Victor 4 points
You can use the same T-Rex heli because this is 100pcnt compatible. To remove the doubt "customer who bougth look into this, ALSO bougth .."

I had similayr problem with 250GT belt. Everything just didnt work, it didnt stay at place at any gain. SO i checked everything and boy everything was wrong: first- belt tensin was to high - it needs to be tight so when you take screwdriver and press upon belt whit little presure it should not bind to other side, just aprox to middle. second - gear mesh with tail gear and main gear was wrong - to distant, and caused one tooth to brake third - vibration, i had some vibration, which i didnt know where it comes from, so I disasambled everything, used threadlock on everything and it was gone. So did the tail drifting

Hi. i just finish the build and set up of my great HK500. i used: Turnigy Brushless ESC 85A w/ 5A SBEC(great and easy to set with the programming card). Turnigy Typhoon 500H Heli Motor 1800kv Turnigy MG930 Digital Metal Gear Servo 3.6kg ( fits perfect ) And I have align 780 gyro and ds520 as tail servo. I try going up and down of sensitive gyro from TX (wk 2801 pro) from 55% to 75. in 55% the tail moves slow, but doesn't stay, and in 75% the tail moves very fast ( like shaking) I tryed 55.56.57.58.....75 and doesn't stay straight. can be the belt tension, or what else can move the tail. Maybe the foam of the GYRO?. what can I do. I'm gonna try to put a video on youtube about what's happening. Thanks.
 FIELIES 6 points
Had the same problem on my HK500 with the GP780 Gyro and Align DS 520 servo. The 780 is very sensitive.I used a firmer foam than the one supplied with the servo and very importand. You have to stick down the wires going into the gyro (servo and gyro wire)on the heli with foam tape aswell. The vibration off the wires effects the gyro badly and makes the heli shake. After i did that the tail is rock solid. Running at 53% head lock.

Is there a fiberglass canopy that fits this heli with a Turnigy 3000mah 6S battery in it?
 Mike 7 points
Yes, its fiberglass ans also yes, you could use 3000mah 6s battery. I use this configuration also!
 Dave Gunn 28 points
I have this heli with the Turnigy 3000mah battery and the canopy doesn't fit very well. Does anyone know a fiberglass canopy that fits over the Turnigy battery?

What are the “tail blade grip bolts“? Did you guys changed them?
 Mike 7 points
Yes, i change them!!!!
 gerardo 8 points
I have not see the need to changue it. Somethimes, due the belt tension, it is nessesary to adjust with a small screw the tail. Will fly fine.

3 thumbs up!
Kit is of decent quality compared to the price. Make sure you take apart the main head and tail and apply thread lock as there was hardly any thread lock on the metal parts. Also make sure you apply grease on the main and tail thrust bearings as there was not a single drop of grease on them and they will fail only after a few flights due to friction. I replaced the following parts with Align parts Main, tail, feathering shaft, tail belt.

yep! i got one .. its ok really, but forgett the carbon boom! its very flexible and causes the tail to vibrate. on first flight the tail box unscrewed it self, dropping the tail fin, no locktight on the tail so checked head, little to none either ! dry thrust bearings head & tail, screws are cheap and snap if you give em some ! canopy is poor, still some plastics that need upgrading, customs had me for 15 duty but overall ok for the money av fun

Just recieved my 3rd 500 kit to use as spares. When are HK going to get the lenght of the boom and the tail push rod correct. I bought first kit with this problem in December 2010!! 4 months latter same thing. Cutting down the boom is straight forward enough but the push rod being to long is a pain, where do you get correct lengh pushrods?? Great kit otherwise, I've had no problem with tail rotors or anything else. Would give 5 stars if not for boom and push rod issue.
