The Zlin-42 is a Czech built tandem seat trainer that is used for VFR training, basic instrument training and also as a glider tug, the type also saw service with former Eastern Bloc airforces as a trainer. The Zlin-42 was also used as a basic aerobatic trainer and even saw some combat in Sri Lanka!
This is a nicely built and hugely practical, real world, every day sport fly model that will last for years. The robust tricycle under-carriage makes the Zlin 42 easy to handle on the ground and capable of handling almost any strip. The removable 2 pc plug in wing makes for easy transportation and fast field assembly, likewise, the massive canopy offers easy access and also makes the Zlin an ideal candidate for an electric conversion. The hardware is all top notch and includes a fuel tank and engine mount. The covering is first class and the colour scheme ideal for orientation.
The robust but lightweight construction of this model makes for an excellent sport fly model that will turn in a few aerobatic moves when you want it to, yet the generous size, thick wing & light wing loading gives you a model that is equaly happy flown slowly without getting out of shape. This is a nice size, real world sport fly model that can be enjoyed when all the hanger queens are tucked safely away and the fact that it can be built for real world money is a definate bonus!
Kellyann Aorund $210 with shipping included from HK. I have not seen this one in the shops here yet but the shops here normally only carry the proven brand name planes and $210 will get you something similar.
Old Man I have to have it. But mine will be Electric. I want a box that make my ELECTRIC smell and sound like a PETROL plane. The guy at the field say I am a Girly Girl with a Girly Planes. I ramble guys thanks
Depends on the flight-style you have. With a 4s5000mAh Lipo and a 4250-600KV motor(or similar) you could fly between 5 and 15 minutes. With good throttle-control up to 20min, I think. I tested this at a plane of the same size and weight, should be comparable.
Hi,I'm interested in the little beauty. Can any body give me some demensions, like from where the motor mounts to the end of the Cowl? Would like ti fit an RCGF 15cc gas engine in one...
I like it! I've ordered one, and I'm going to put an ASP S61A Two Stroke Glow Engine on it. I've also ordered five HK15138 Standard Analog Servos for it. The radio will be a Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter which I've been powering with a ZIPPY Flightmax 2500mAh Transmitter Pack all season. So it's Hobby King all the way.
Hey Jim, Can you let us know how the ASP61A fits in her please. I have one kicking around here that, if it's not too much hassle, may make its way into one of these.
mine just arrived, gonna be a difficult build for me becuase i chose the Turnigy G46 option looks like the G46 will have to move about two inches forward for the prop to clear the cowl - how do i do that? can't just use some kind of extensions, that will muck up the angles built into the plywood engine mount system - the angles have been built in to be correct at the front panel i think? beutifully designed and made but i hope the short length of the aircraft will not mean it will be touchy in pitch??? can anyone advise a prop for the G46 in this aircraft, there's no mention of it anywhere looking forward to your help guys BP
Just take aluminium tubes of around 6x4mm and 2" long to make the motormount. Then use 4mm screws, that ar long enough to go through the motor mounting cross and the tubes and firewall into the nuts. That stand much bigger motors and will work well, I think. Use the 14x10 at 4s, or maybe a 13x8 at 5s. Should work. Depends on the manufacturer of the probs and what kind of battery you use. for 40C lipos try smaller props *)
thanks m8, much appreciated - i might make up a one piece extension with thin alloy plate at each end, that way i can cross brace the whole thing too cheers BP
hey Wilhelm, guess what? i had a surf and found some good ideas there too, one of them gave me a link to THIS website!! type "firewall" into the search box and have a peek at what's there.... thanks again m8 BP
Everything arrived Dec 30. Plane, Engine, Servos. All looks well. Minor scratches inside the canopy, but no biggie. Instruction manual on mini cd, not too instructive. It looks like the ASP 61 will fit, but the cowling will need to be cut for cylinder head and muffler. May get a Pitts style muffler. All-in-all quite happy, and the price was right !!
g'day Jim, yeah agree on the mini cd instructions, doesn't cover much and the pix are too small to see the detail. HK should have looked at the engine mounting situation with the recommended Turnigy G46 and included the right size firewall extension mount info in the parts/accessories section. BP
Hi DAVID and Jim, how's the Zlin going? Plenty of room for the ASP61? Have you had the maiden flight/s yet. This thing is growing on me... and NSW needs one!
nice acft but big problems for me the shaft for the nosewheel is too short, it will make the acft sit nose down on the ground the cowl will need to be cut to fit around the nosewheel leg, i will have to buy special tools for that the firewall mounts the HK took three weeks to deliver are all too small, so i'm back to looking at ways to mount the big Turnigy if anyone from HK is reading this, how about you let me know what the correct firewall mount is for this motor - that would be nice.....
I haven't decided which engine to use yet. Saito 82, Saito 65, or the ASP 61 with Pitts style muffler. The cowling will have to be cut to accommodate any one of them. The cowling can be cut with heavy duty scissors, then sanded smooth.
I wasn't happy with the nose-gear either, so I bought a FULTS RF-400 which is much better.
There'll be no maiden until Spring. We're in the depths of Winter in Canada.
A very nice looking airplane. I'm thinking of doing a blog on it.
Hi Jim and DAVID, well the u/c nose leg even looks too short in the photos. Why do they sell it like that? Jim, how does the Saito 82 look? I have an OS 81FSa which I was hoping to use in this or maybe the Super Chipmunk, can't decide yet. I have a cheap Dremel copy with thin cut-off discs that flies through fiberglas cowl material. Then use those HK diamond needle files to finish the shape and the edges. They are a bargain. Regards, RossG.
hey guys, just got a reply to my email to FULTS, they are selling direct now so i am going to order the RF-400 from them asap and i've got a lil dremel type tool that will do the job on the cowl, just gotta find some nice lil discs for it cheers dt ps hey Jim, do the blog !!!
Good looks generally add weight and remove some aerodynamics (especially in the older days of engineering) Older planes fly ability was bad enough to obtain let alone making them look good in the process
I agree this aircraft needs decals. Glad it has none already applied as the sky is the limit to decorating it. It would be nice say with British Roundels, sharks mouth on the cowl, etc.
Guess you are right Willhelm. HK have the new Turnigy L5055A with 400 kV, max power 1400W and up to 8S. It would probably be awsome. But I am still waiting for HK to add stickers on this plane which I think will never happen
Yes, of course. But a bad landing with the prop touching the ground would make it break.. the 8mm shaft at my 5kg PT17 that is landing with nosestands everytime still runs nice and never broke.
It's pretty ugly, how cuff said in different words, but it's a great alternative to all these Cubs out there makeing the flying fields monotone yellow.
"your" means 'your aircraft' "you're" means 'you are just another xxxxxx' if you mean "you are" then you say "you're" if you mean "your aircraft" then say "your aircraft" have we got it now?????
This is susposed to be a discussion on the aircraft, all you lot are doing is bagging others that do not go along with your speakings. It has to be speakings as it certainly is not a discussion, if you lot left the site alone then it would be a happy little family and get some constructive discussion underway.

Got mine in the US and posted instructions under the file tab. Everybody wondering which power setup to use? Instructions call for .60 2 stroke or .90 4 stroke. Those thinking G46 combo should get a nice taxi! Need to be in the low kv 50mm size or bigger. More than enough room in the cowl, it's huge. I'm going to use my RCGF 20cc.
