The Catalina is arguably the most famous flying boat ever built and certainly one of the most widely used, this aviation icon saw service pre and post WW2 both with the military and civilian operators. This amazing aeroplane was used for firefighting, hunting U-Boats, Air Sea Rescue, the list goes on and on.
This is a great size Plug N Fly model with a very low wing loading that can be flown off water or off grass, it is very easy to fly and it won't break the bank! Being Plug N Fly, it comes with 4 x 9g servo's and 2 x powerful brushless motors & ESC's, it also comes with all extension leads, y-leads and even a parallel loom for connecting the ESC's to a single lipoly. For flying off water, there is a water rudder and wing floats, simply remove to fly off grass!
Removing the magnetic canopy reveals a large ply plate for mounting all your RC gear and lipoly to keep them away from any possible water ingress, the huge amount of canopy room also allows for a wide choice of lipoly capacities, from as little as 1000mAh right up to 2200mAh 3s. Yes, the wings are removable -but you wouldn't want to do it very often. There are many cables running from the wing, down the pylon and into the fuselage to the rx and battery. It's a very fiddly job, and not something that you'd want to do at the flying site. For the price, this isn't a bad kit - I was out flying mine a couple of days ago.
Just to add a couple of comments - I didn't notice when building this kit that 2 of the supplied props are reverse rotation, until too late. Not a problem, but I had to replace both ESC's recently, and reversed one of the motors then. The water rudder is ineffective for taxiing, and so I programmed my Tx to give differential steering on the motors - very effective, but switch it off for take-off!
I sprayed my Catalina with silver, and then RAF camouflage scheme, modded the nose to take a little turret. Did away with the spinners and used dome head nuts to lock the props. To the wire wing struts I added strips of plastic card held in place with heat shrink tubing.

Received 3/10/12. Shipped 1/10/12. Well packed. All parts there._. Bad points; plastic yellow top cover was in two pieces (cracked) currently going through hobbykings warranty. Some of the pieces had scuff marks, bit of black on the white foam etc. One part had a section of crushed foam about the size of my thumbnail.
Requires some work to get built, more than expected.
Anyway bar that, nice finish on the foam, plenty of room inside specially for FPV.
Will give a full flight review when finished.

Build update:
Ok, for the most it seems like a nice build, however instructions are a little vague and setting up twin motors should be more sturdy.
The foam seems very brittle. and the paint flicks off too easy.
Everything bar engine mounts slot on lovely. Motors are too far foward and stick out of the cowels, the wood needs to be trimmed down. Will post flight review.

I have looked at this model for ages and it was well over £100 elsewhere which I felt was too much but now at this price I felt iw was good value and on getting the box I was right. With the hardware alone worth the money the kit is a bonus!!
Went together well and the only thing I found that was wrong but in no way affected the build - out of the four props supplies 2 are for the oposite direction (CW) which would be fine if you got another spinner with a prop cut out to match but you dont so you cant fit opposite rotating props anyway - small point and that the only gripe.
Great value plane which can take off from water, snow, ice, grass - in fact the morors with a 3s battery provide enough power to take of vertical. Any improvements - be fantastic in EPO FOAM.
