I just ordered a FPV landing gear.

I was thinking that it would be nice to put a gyro in it. When I fly forward, I don't want the camera to point into the ground. Would it be possible to put a 401b gyro on the platform and have that move the servo? Which way should the gyro be mounted?

I tried building a platform myself, but I could not get the gyro to react.

It should work, mount the gyro on its side with the leads pointing fore and aft.  If you have a heli just tip it on its side and wiggle the tail up and down that should prove if it will work.

Look in the tricopter thread and you will see how gyros are used to control the motors in a tricopter, mounted on their sides but across the lateral axis, except the one for the tail motor its mounted on its side but along the longitudinal axis

make sure it is a quality digital servo or else the jitters will destroy your video. You will have to play much with the gain to get it to respond proper but after it is dialed it will be niceThumbs Up
Thats the ugliest hat Ive ever seen...looks good on you though.
