Just flown the Rare Bear for the first time. Fast, fast fast is all i can say. Unfortunately the speed controller cooked with the recommended 4S battery. Still highly recommended.
Anyone else enjoying this beauty? |

The supplied YH1XXX speed controller is rated at 20 amps. The Rare Bear on 4S draws 25-26 amps fully charged and about 360-400 watts. I guess that explains the fried speed controller.

Except HobbyKing explicitly state that the ESC is 4S-capable, both in their product page and in their review video. I'd be having a chat to HK about that. Are replacement motors avaialable through HK too? I'd like to try one in a few different airframes. Edited by klaw81 - 05/Sep/2011 at 10:40am |

Hi, I am not too worried about the ESC, just lucky I didn't loose the airframe. The motor is under the glued cowl so I cannot make out the brand, but it is quiet, and very fast. Will probably order another Rarebear as a backup plane cause it just rocks.

Perhaps installing a UBEC would be a wise move instead? That way, you can still keep the plane under control if your ESC burns out.
I really want to find out what motor is in these Funfighters - it seems like the idea powerplant for any number of small planes. |

The rated 4s probably isn't for WOT over 10 seconds.
Burst mode/speed only. Those who fly WOT all the time is just asking for it. Even more if you don't have a wattmeter. Damn, that meter is one of the best investment I have. No need to depend on manufacturer data. |

The HK 30A ESC (the blue ones) will fit these birds just fine and we flew the AT6 Texan FunFighter that featured in the latest "XJet RC plane of the week" videos with the HK ESC after the stock one burned up on 4S. After a good long flight, mainly at full throttle on a 4S Nantech pack (just 13% remaining in the battery) the HK ESC was barely warm.
As you can see in Part 2 of the video on the XJet channel, the original ESC was burning hot after just a minute or two on a 4S pack -- before it blew on the next flight. Just buy the HK ESC and, for under $10, save yourself the grief. I'm not even going to bother using the stock ESC in my "just arrived" Rare Bear. |

I flew a nice shiny new Rarebear on Saturday and I'm pretty impressed. I was only running a 3S 1000mah battery, but the plane still has plenty of power and will easily climb vertically out of sight. You can happily zoom around the sky on only 60% throttle and still have plenty of fun.
It's a very nice-handling plane, with a great balance between stability and manoeuverability. It's certainly not a plane for beginners though - landing speeds are relatively high, so even the smallest error will result in a cartwheel. A bigger ESC is still needed - the standard ESC gets plenty hot running 3S so 4S is definetely asking for trouble. Great fun, and highly recommended. |

After many flights one of the aileron servos has stopped working. Will fit new servos shortly and go for a blast. Awesome plane.
