hi
i may be looking to venture into RC boats
looking for some info in here

i see some props labeled 43mm x 1.4
and i see some labeled 43x26x9mm
i even see some list p1.7 d1/8x2

what is the difference ? i think those are just different way of presenting measurements but how does one see what is what ?

i do know how a normal airplane prop of say 12 x 6 ... 12inch diameter and 6inch of pitch (6inch of travel per rotation thru solid medium)

how some knowledgeable person can shed some light on this ..

on another note ...
i wanna buy an ARR boat .. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11984__Turnigy_Taipan_Fiberglass_V_Hull_385mm_Hull_Only_.html

i already have a 2836 3200kv outrunner capable of over 600watts
what other items will i need (besides i ones i list below) ?
trim tabs .. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__12198__Trim_Tab_Set_40_5mm.html
flex rod boot .. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__12685__Flex_Rod_Boots.html
rudder .. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__12200__Rudder_Set_Small_74_5mm_.html

Hi allanQ,

the prop labeling on the HK site is crappy.

And there are several ways to describe the pitch and diameter

Normally you label it as your first example. it says 43mm, thats the diameter of the prop. And it says 1.4, which descibes the pitch. It is 1.4 x 43mm =60 mm.

For the second one i would guess its 43 dia. and 26mm pitch, which would be a pitch of 0.6. That sems a little bit off , since boat propeller are normlly in the range of a pitch factor from 1.2 to 1.6, in extrem cases 1.9 and more.

For Propellers i would recommend R2hobbies, since they have a wider selection of propellers and boat accesoirs.

Ouch, i am sorry to sink your boat but the boat is too small for the motor. the Motor would be ok in a 450-500mm size boat.

I don't know what battery you want to use, but try to keep the rpms between 28-30000 rpm. norrmally you use a 4200kv motor with a 2s Lipo.

And for the ESC: for the taipan go with a good 30A ESC, if you go for a 500mm boat you need somethong around 60-80 Amps, depending if you use 2 or 3s.

Just keep in mind that boats are real ESC killers since they pull high Amps during acceleration.

Maybe you should have a look at this:

http://www.r2hobbies.com/eng/proddetail.php?prod=rcbt3901001_code

it should fit your motor and it is already set up, which isn't that bad for a first boat.

And i would recommend you the go to a boat specific forum like rummrunner or RC-Racebaots.de (they have a english section)

hi maxx
thanks for your reply
i guess it came too late ... i already ordered all the stuff including a 70a ESC (this way i can never kill the ESC by overloading i suppose .. haha)
i would have guessed the motor will be way too big for the small boat ... the ESC is overkill ... but i can manage to squeeze everything in then the boat will surely be flying .. LOL
since power system is way overkill i guess i will have to keep the rest of the boat weight as light as possible

will update once i get everything here and starts assembling it

On a small boat weight is as important as power. I have a very small RTR boat. The motor would barely get the boat on plane until I changed the NIMH battery pack for LIPO. The voltage on a fully charged pack was the same but the battery weight was half. With the reduction in weight the little boat got up on top of the water and litterly flew. It will now do back flips if you are not careful.
