Hello all, I have finished building the X-31 today, but the requirements say that I only need 2 servos for the ailerons, but what about the elevator? I mean how is the plane suppose to go up/down? Do I have to create my own elevator?

Hi,

You only need two servos because the X-31 uses elevons.

Hey thanks for the reply. How do elevons work? Do both the ailerons point up or down simultaneously? and how do I get them to do that?

Some links on how elevons works, RC UNIVERSE and RCGroups. If you tell us what TX you are using someone can tell you if your TX can mix the elevator and ailerons for elevons,
or if its a basic TX you will need to use a v-tail mixer to do the same thing.

I am using the Turnigy 9x. I figured how to get the ailerons and elevons to work together by going into the elevon option and setting everything to 100%, but they are in sync, so I used the reverse but still no luck.

Could you give information on what you mean.

Setting up elevons for the first time can be a bit confusing, sometimes
you have to swap the two servo leads and use servo reverse.

Ok I set up my servos on the ailerons so that they are naturally reversed. I have tried for a long time to get the servos to act as elevons, so they move the ailerons up/down together but they are always in reverse. Do I have to change the position of one of the servos?

I will assume the TX is in elevon mode in the TX,
Unplug the two servo-plugs and swap them around on the RX then you may or may-not need to use servo reverse on one or both channels on the TX (on the RX thay should be pluged in the aileron and elevator ports)

One problem I did see in your photo is the aileron/elevon horn is not in line with the hinge, this is very common mistake by new modelers, you will need to fix that before you fly

See my servo horns, there in line with the hinge, you need to do the same.

Hey thanks for the reply. So the Y wire adapter for the servos is not needed. All I need to do is to connect one servo to the aileron port in my TX and the other in the elevator port. Also my ailerons seem to be functioning just fine. What difference does it make if the horns are not in line with the hinges?

Don't use the y adapter take it out,
and yes plug one servo into the aileron port and the outher in to the elevator port on the receiver, the transmitter will electronically mix the two to give you elevons.

The reason why the horns need to be in line with the hinge is to have even movement both ways, push/pull on the horn. The way you have it, it will have "mechanical differential" giving you more movment one way than the outher, it should be even both ways up/down left/right, all models are like this.
