i have fried 2 of these esc's in 4 min running time. im running a b3660 3060kv, using 2x3s nano tech lipo's. can someone educate me on causes? is it lipo's too much for the esc? or 120 amps continuous too much for the motor, causing too much resistance back into the esc? or are these products just s..t?

USERID, I am running them in series. Actual voltage is 25.2. What seems strange to me is that i ran the same lipo's w/90 amp joysway esc and never had a problem untill it took a deep water dive one day. Anything you can tell me will be helpful.

Hello
You should be thankfull that you doid not burnt also the motor. Your motor is 3060kv * 25.V = 77000 RPM ????? You should stay between 25-30k RPM for normal use maybe up to 40K for racing with a good motor & ESC and very good water cooling. Your actual motor is made for 3S not 6S.For 6S choose a motor with up to 1400 KV and a good ESC like Turnigy 180A Regards |

Like Paul said the motor is only rated to 3s. Even though the Aquastar is rated to 6s for an esc. I would be using at least a 180a esc , eg the Turnigy 180a marine. Just gives you a bit of a saftey margin. If you still want to use 6s then have a good look around at the specs on the inrunners before you buy.
Good luck

Paul t and Keel1, I'd like to thank you both for your knowledge and insight. 40k rpm for racing, that's too bad. Cause it really flys up in the 70k range. Do either of you know of any inrunners that can safely turn a higher rpm? Or if theres a bearing kit that can be retrofitted in? For now i'll drop down in voltage, order a 180 amp marine turnigy esc and start looking for another motor. Again I'd like to thank you both for the help.

Sure it was flying but what was the cost? 2 esc in 4 min? quite expensive if you ask me...
Anyway that's not the way to go.At high RPM not only the motor and ESC are stressed but also the drive line (flex, shaft, etc) and all the linkage between them. That's the reason why at SAW competition they make only few high speed passes on one day. If you want more speed AND reliability you should go for a bigger motor, bigger prop and less rpm. If you look on Youtube you will see great racing boats flying on just 4S. If you need a reco for the motor you must tell us the details of your boat (hull type, size, etc.) |

Paul-t, you've given me more of the kind of information that Im looking for than all the hobby stores combined. Im running the joysway s version surge crusher, 750mm cat. 5mm flex shaft nylon packing tube w/ adjustable prop depth and angle. 37mm 1.4 prop,3 blade, counter clockwise

Something is not right here.
If you are using the original motor of the super version that is 4563 motor with (my guess) around 2000KV.If is the motor from regular version is a 3660 size but with no more than 2200kv. So it can not be 3060kv only if you have replaced the motor with one of your own. Anyway the motor is polling a lot of amps and that is the reason for burning the esc.You need a big esc of at least 180 Amps. Then if i where you a will start looking for temps. If the ESC & motor are below 50 degrees Celsius (you do the math) then you can prop up to 40mm.Read again the temps after no MORE than 1-2 minutes of running. Then according to temps you can prop up again to 42mm or not. Also what I would do is to change the watercooling tubes with big 4-5 mm tubes, you can find in the hobby stores.Make sure that you use zip ties to secure the tubes to esc and motor. If you really want to change the motor you can either go for the Turnigy T600 or better you can go for Leopard 40 series. According to how many cells do you plan to use choose the kv.For example if you plan to run on 6 cells choose no more than 1400-1600kv. Edited by paul_t - 21/Jun/2012 at 9:14pm |
