I am looking for boat parts for a school project where we have to build a boat (theres a price limit so the cheaper the better), and it has to go fast. I was looking at this brushless motor,
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8595&Product_Name=2040SL_4800kv_Brushless_Inrunner_(WaterCooled) (when do you think you'll be getting more in stock?) would that work with this prop, if not, which one would be good? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=7358&Product_Name=Turnigy_4mm_AquaProp__31x22x14mm. and this ESC if not, which oen would be good? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9299&Product_Name=TowerPro_H40A_Brushless_Speed_Controller_ Also that brushless motor says the shaft is 2mm and the prop is 4mm, what would I need to connect them (which shaft, coupling, etc)? Thank you for your help! |

Also we have to make the hull, would foam or wood be better? And what kind of foam/wood would work best with the items mentioned above?

Can't help with the power system, but, carving & sanding foam isn't too much fum (IMO)foam and I prefer balsa/ply cause it's more fun to work with (for me). Whichever you choose it will need a fiberglass covering topside and bottom side. If using foam you'll have to use epoxy resin whereas plain old resin is ok on balsa and less than half the cost of epoxy.

I can only remember half of what I say.... I used to walk on water 'til I found out it was more fun sitting in the boat drinking beer Ron |

Would the Balsa be strong enough to hold on to the motor? Like not cracking with the screws to hold everything down?

That's one place where plywood is used. Transom is another as well as keel and top decking and where ever reinforcement is needed.
I'd google "rc boat plans" if you're not familiar with construction methods to see if something shows up that may be similar to your project (which you didn't describe) and could be helpful for you.

Thanks and I already looked for boat plans. The project is pretty much to build a boat to carry an orange around a pond as fast a possible. |

Hmmm. Sounds like that would be a good project for a simple deck over two pontoons with an air drive like the Florida air boats..

That's a high kv motor...when using a high kv motor the prop size get smaller just like on an airplane otherwise you'll smoke your ESC or motor or both. Not to mention puff your battery. Just remember that water has more resistance than air so prop size is important. Sorry I can't tell you what size to use.

Thanks W3FJW Ron and wchiro for your responses and trying to help. Should I repost this in another section of the forums to maybe get replies on what I need to connect the motor to the prop and if the ESC and prop are good for that motor?

No, this is the right forum. Boat people read this forum so it's the best way to get help. HK doesn't yet sell the parts you need but maybe someone will provide a link for you.
