Hi, can I use the Turnigy Park480 Brushless Outrunner 850kv in this Hobby King YAK 54? Thank You
 slyhq 120 points
Sure, with no problem. You just have to figure out the motor mount and settle the CG. Good luck!

Hey guys, does it do good 3d with everything stocked? Hover and stuff
 slyhq 120 points
YES. However for more fun, many flyers have upgraded their motors to have higher thrust. The stock motor shaft is also VERY thin/weak. Would not stand a hard knock on the nose. So you might consider getting ordering a motor when you order this plane. That said, it's a very nice plane to fly and train 3D on :)
Alfy  1 points - 3/18/2013

Would a zippy 1500 battery fit
 slyhq 120 points
Can. But will affect the CG n all-up-weight of this plane. If you want to just fly around, 1500mah is ok. But if you want to do 3D, it is best you keep to the recommended 1300mah. Hope this helps!
Alfy  1 points - 3/17/2013

Can you put lights on this plane
 slyhq 120 points
Sure! Just keep it as light as possible!
glennster101  1 points - 2/20/2013

would a zippy 15c 1000mh be to low discharge for this model?
 slyhq 120 points
For just floating around the sky, 15C should do fine. Best to have bare minimum 20 to 25C for more general flights. For 3D, better to go 30C and above.

i just received my hk yak 54 but it came with an outrunner bell motor pre installed anyone has any idea what is the specs of this motor?

Why is there no replacement parts for these planes, if parts aren't avible then they shoud not break.
 Todd 14 points
Parts are at ****parkflyers ****. Different color. Same model.
Adza.  2 points - 11/20/2012

Hi, I like the looks of this plane, but am concerned that there are no replacement parts available. (And I don't like the idea of buying a new one just to replace something like the front cowl). I was wondering if anyone could recommend any Hobby King models similar to this (EPO Foam, Full 3D, etc) as an alternative, that have full replacement parts available for them too from Hobby King, that is just as good (or a better plane) than this? Thanks
 Todd 14 points
****Parkflyers out of new jersey have all the replacement parts for this exact model. colors are different.
Brad  1 points - 11/12/2012

I need to order the plastic gear that goes on the motor shaft. Where do I go to order this part???
 Todd 14 points
I use a 30 10 c turnigy motor from Hobby king with a wing tiger motor mount and a corsair propeller from a supplier called parkflyers from New jersey. they also carry all the individual parts if you desire. including the original gear box you are asking for.
Gtrain  120 points - 10/2/2012

Team, What's the consensus for this puppy as a replacement? NTM Prop Drive Series 28-30A 750kv / 140w plus a simple 25A ESC. Do I need to do some modding or just bang in a ply motor mount and power away?
 KaiWE 37 points
I use a turnigy 2217/1050kv spinning a 11x4.7 30A ESC. I have shortened the stick mount and use the E-flite EFLM1915 Outrunner Stick Mount - front of motoe is inline with front of cowl, fits perfect :)

If you put a non-stock motor on this plane with 275 watts setup you may want to use carbon fibre to reinforce the tail and main wing. Use a soldering iron to make the groove to instal the CF spars
fapsauss  183 points - 4/28/2012

Guys.. Replacement gear/shaft.. Wheres it at lol
 Benny! 266 points
Replace the whole motor and mount to a non geared one for much better performance and easy spares. Cheers
ThatGuy  9 points - 4/18/2012

Do you reckon you could use a 3s 2200mah battery?
 Benny! 266 points
Hi,I think it would fly but the performance would suffer greatly with the added weight especially with the stock motor, which is really not powerful enough. The machine performs well with the 1300mah and an upgraded motor! Cheers
 Todd 14 points
The original battery box will only allow 1300 mah battery. Best performance overall too.
 muhammad farid 28 points
Tested using turnigy 2200mah . Fly great with more power and better cg,less agility. Ccould hover without any problem. Pls remember not to use too high capacity battery, pls check your amp drawn everytime u want to do upgrade or will damage your esc or motor. For a serious flyer its good to buy a turnigy 7 in 1 mega meter from hk. Worth every penny.
fapsauss  183 points - 1/16/2012

How difficult is it to remove those unsightly HK graphics from the wing/fuse? I love hobbyking but those are just horrendous. Also, anyone know of a good site where there are reviews of this plane? Cant find one on rcgroups
 teknokraze 79 points
Look up Art-Tech Yak 54. Same plane, quite a few reviews on both rcgroups and youtube.
 Benny! 266 points
Gday,I have this machine and the Hobby King stickers will peel off easily without damaging the foam underneath. It flys very well with a little bit bigger motor and 1300mah LiPo. Go for it!! Cheers

What do you think about adding a 900kv brushless outrunner?
 Benny! 266 points
Yes!! I think it will work well. I added a 750kv motor but the higher revs would make it hover better again. Worth a try.. just make sure CofG stays right.Cheers
 iceman13 8 points
which prop would u use with the above engine replacements? thanks
 Benny! 266 points
Hi again... I'm no expert on 3D but I think perhaps a 10x5 would be a good starting point. If it's too fast a finer pitch will give you better vertical but slower top speed. This is how I understand it. If anyone else has a more scientific explanation I too would like to learn. Cheers
 Todd 14 points
Best motor and prop for me was a turnigy 1030 b or c with a 10 6 prop. Unlimited vertical. hovers nicely and runs 5 to 7 minutes on 1300 mah battery. You will need to make your own motor mount.
teknokraze  79 points - 1/14/2012

Does Hobby King sell replacement parts for this? couldn't find any through search. Or at least the decal set? If not I will have to order Art-Tech parts with the different color scheme even though I like the HK scheme. Thanks for any info.
 Benny! 266 points
I don't think they do but they are so cheap just buy the complete aircraft again and have two of everything!! Why not..??
 jonacrazyplane 52 points
no yet
 muhammad farid 28 points
Hk color scheme much better!
dakal50  11 points - 7/18/2011

I dont think this plane has enough power, does anyone know a good motormount to add a motor without gearbox.
 Benny! 266 points
Gday mate. I have the Hobby King spitfire and swapped the engine from the geared one in the Yak to the one out of the Spitfire. It works perfectly on the plastic mount that it came on in the spitty and the power is increased considerably without being silly. I even used the 3 bladed prop of the Spitfire and it looks, sounds and performs heaps better. Any similar brushless outrunner would do the same just avoid too much weight up front. Cheers.. Ben.
Fredylg  55 points - 1/5/2011

do I need to add weight at the front to get the CG right?,Im not happy with the quality I havent fly it yet
 F100CUFFLINK 886 points
maybe you wont know till you check
 muhammad farid 28 points
U need to add weight to get the cg right, with reccomended battery capacity. Without any weight added your flying will quite hard, too agile, very difficult to landing. Try to add weight until u feel comfortable. Its a good plane.

I'm looking to get back into flying planes (12years since I last flew a plane). Would I be biting off more than I can chew with this model? I'd be able to handle the plane once its in the air, just a bit fearful of landings considering the reviews I have read. Thanks
 Omnik 4406 points
It's my first plane. Before it I tried 1-2 hours in simulator on every plane - big, small, slow, fast, so I was prepared for everything :) And i have few success flights before first crash. But as first plane I'd recommend you any unbreakable or EPP. GeeBee is very good. They are full 3d and very lite.
Kurtis  61 points - 10/7/2010

Can this plane hover? does it have enough power
 Omnik 4406 points
Yes it can. It's my first plane, and it's good enough. It can go straight up. But do not use li-po larger than 1300mAh - does not fit. After I bought myself geebee (unbreakable), I realized that better to by everything in pieces - servo, motor, esc and kit. In this plane everything is average, and you can get better electrics for same price, I think.
 muhammad farid 28 points
This plane have enough power for hovering, quite suprising with its slow speed but can do a good hovering.

Please send me manual Yak 54. In package not inserted. Thanks
 kolotoympas 55 points
Me either. Don’t worry probably there is no manual. But it is very easy to build it. Careful with center of gravity. However here is an alternative manual ***********art-tech****/english/pdf/YAK54.pdf

Why HK don't have any spare parts for this plane?
Ruslan  13 points - 8/13/2010

Hello!
Does anyone know should I program the ESC in the airplane?
 kolotoympas 55 points
no. it is ready to fly. and works fine with the 3600kv motor. no brake. no cut off mode. also i think this isn't a programable esc.

What is the size of battery compartiment?
Is there replacement parts available on HobbyKing for the YAK 54?

Any suggestions for outranner motor?
 Davis 36 points
turnigy 860Kv. Flies AMAZING with a 25 amp ESC, but stock ESC works fine. You'll need a stick mount. I like the eflite mount.
facundo  6 points - 7/13/2010

someone know, which arms are compatible with servos that include this plane? i must change the servos becouse, the arms haven`t been included in my kit.
Edward  11 points - 6/11/2010

no paper work included with mine anyone got a cg on this plane
 Davis 36 points
the recommended CG is basically between the screw that holds the canopy on the fuselage and the canopy itself. I try to keep it somewhere in the battery compartment.. preferably towards the front.

is any one having problems with prop shaft bending
 Flying Goat 126 points
Yeah. Second flight, I intially repaired using a Turnpro 2409 shaft but have since changed the motor to a KD A22-10S Brushless Outrunner Motor. Using a 10x4.7 prop which is too big should change to a 9x4.7 really but current config it will hang at 1/2 throttle.
 paul 23 points
Thanks for that i'll give it a try. only flone six times and ready for third shaft. Wouldn't mind but haven't even crashed it.
 Davis 36 points
I installed a 860kv turnigy outrunner and a 25amp ESC... works AMAZING. go direct on this plane. makes it come alive

Well packaged as usual from HK. Two compliants, the motor shaft is very weak ( I don't really like reduction gear system) and the screw fixing for the rear stabilisers allows them to move around. Better to glue these in place. Under carriage is supprisingly strong tho. Prefer the Pitts which I also have..

C/g is way out , {I suprised no one else has had that problem} had to move my battery compartment forward and still and lead to get it right the C/G is 60mm { 2 1/2" for the people who still use the antiquated unit of measurement } back from the top screw between the cowl and the canopy apart from that the plane flys a treat

Prop Shaft can be replaced with the GWS IPS Drive Shaft part# IPS-6A. The white Gorilla Glue available at Home Depot etc works great for repairs.

I've flown the model twice, its very responsive. I've been away from RC for a few years. I'd setup the control throws with them set on the most inner part of the servo and the outermost part of the control throw to reduce the throws for the first few flights. Overall Great Model.
