HobbyKing HK-010 Wattmeter & Voltage Analyzer
Hobby King HK-010 is (yet another) compact and accurate wattmeter and power analyzer, but this one also includes an inbuilt balancer. Its robust alloy case make it a good carry-anywhere item.
After modification to use this watt meter from zero volt by adding separate power supply, mine shows initial current reading of 5.1A. Is there any way to calibrate the value to 0.0A ?
Thank you.
I have found how to calibrate(reset) ampare display for myselt ^^. With no load connected, hold up key and down key simultaneouly for about 5 seconds then ampare reading will be reset to zero.
I everyones ! There is someone can send to me the original firmware ? I made a mistake and erase flash memory of mine... Thanks in advance Olivier csa402*gmail****
Thank you for the very useful information. The HK-010 works just as you say: plug in the battery balance plug into the right side of the HK-010, with the black wire at plug number 1. Also, I can confirm it works without connecting the battery into the "power source" plug on the left side of the HK-010.
Regarding the HK-010 Analyzer: Every time I try to balance or check a battery, even one that came from Hobby King with their own battery connectors, I get a "Cell Connect" error message. I have tried it on 850 mAh 3s through 2200 mAh 4s. Always the same error message. The unit seems to work OK as a Watt meter. Any suggestions?
sorry, cell port(1to 6)with 2 rigdes on ballance lead plug facing rightside up, plugging in starting at 1.black wire(on balance lead plug must go into negative prong on watt meter(read the numbers on cellport negative starts first than 1,2,3 etc).it also appears you can just plug the ballance lead from lipo straight into these ports and do a lipo check and ballance check without connecting the main power/negative wires of lipo to wattmeter.happy day's
thank you for your input and help,
ifound that i will get the same reading
either way.there are planes twins for example
as we know run with one motor reversed so it would be
the same senerio. being new to electrics it's a good
learning curve. again thank's
Roger D
in response to my motor running backwards. the moter
runs properly before i plug the meter in, if i switch
the wires won't it run in reverse when i unplug the
meter? the plane has been all setup and runs fine.
Roger D
Switching the esc-motor wire connection will reverse the motor even when not using the watt meter. I tested it with a DT750 motor/20 amp ESC and motor rotation is the same with or without the watt meter. I don't know how it could reverse the rotation when power was suppose to just pass through.
That $4 difference includes the cost of shipping, so why dose it cost $4 more to ship from international store to Aussie store, than it costs for international store to me ...?
HobbyKing incurs costs building, operating and stocking the local warehouses. They pass this cost on to you in slightly higher prices for the items you purchase from those warehouses. For those higher prices, you usually get your items faster for a lower shipping cost. You also may have better options for shipping hazardous products like batteries.
If it is cheaper for you to buy internationally, then by all means buy from the international warehouse.
hi there can anyone help me im running a model hovercraft and have killed my rear motor as is pulled to meny amps i need some thing to read what the motor is pulling can anyone help what i need please thanks
You need something like this product the HK-010 or the "Turnigy 2 in 1 Power Meter/Servo Meter 1.5" TFT which has the same functionality plus a bit more. And that is at a lesser price than this power meter.
I disagree. This one can measure each cell individually. So it will monitor the cells and make sure you dont go to low on a multiple cell count battery. The Turnigy 2 in 1 does not do that.
This is now obsolete now compared to the "Turnigy 2 in 1 Power Meter/Servo Meter 1.5 TFT" PRODUCT ID: 9330000003
Exact same input but with added server mesurments, digital colour display and graphing why would you want to pay more for this item and get less than the new version???

Yes, but this also works well when you have things under a load. If you are suspicious of a cell that is bad, this will tell you which cell is bad when under a load. There are people who always ask if I have a bad cell, but cant tell, this will tell you. The servo function of the 2 in 1 is good for plane's, but for cars/trucks, its not an issue.
Please tell the guys in the factory to fix the side plate on the output side in the RIGHT way. Mine was not correct so that it was not possible to connect female sockets to the equalizer in the PROPER way. The inner side of the plate was on the outer side making it impossible to plug in the bat equal. connector.
After unscrewing the plate, desoldering the big cables, turning the plate and the cables, resoldering the big cables (with a real big solder iron *-) ) , fixing the plate, everything works nice now... and connecting female sockets is now easily done in the correct way.
Its a full watt meter giving voltage, current and total may.
As well as balancing up to a 6S pack
Look up 'flite test hk-010' on YouTube for a good review
It doesn't come with a balance plug, instead it a slot with pins that you can plug in the balance plugs of your battery. But you must be aware of the polarity (I plugged in 2 batteries the wrong way, smoked both!). The best thing to do is to attach a 6 tab balance board to it, so that way you have polarity protection. You can use the one from your charger (most chargers have a removable balance board). Double check the polarity, and good luck!
Today arrived a HK-010. First test wasn't looking really good, or is this normal?
Only connected Battery and HK-010 tells me that there is 7.1 Ampere:

If you make a mistake, yhis thing can burn! Read the manual! If you hook up a battery without load, on the right side. Nothing should happen. I work with this HK-010 every day I'm on the field, love won't do without it.
I plugged in the battery and balance connectors to check the voltage, When I plugged in the balance connector, smoke came out and burned my balance connector??? I thought it was a polarity issue so I tried again with the balance connector switched around. Same thing happened smoke poured out and killed my battery balance connector. What's wrong with this???
You don't have to plug in both connectors. Only plug into the balance port if you're checking charge levels. Plug into the battery connector to monitor loads.
Nevermind I found that I soldered the connectors to the wrong sides. The output was the input, that was what caused the shorted wire. now everything works fine:). Thanks
Accuracy of balancing and measure of voltage is fine. Accuracy of Ampere and Watts is not satisfying from my point of view. It is fine within approx 10pcnt. Nevertheless a useful equipment at a very good price.
This balancer and discharger is very useful for lipos. I tested it with a multimeter and the volts reading are very accurate. It also give a point three digits reading. 0.000 because it is accurate.
Yes the wattmeter I received was only off by 0.01V (multimeter check), that's good. Also the balance function worked quite well for me. Be sure to use a balance board (with balance plugs) in the balance port, since there is no polarity guard!
Yes, highly recommend it, special good when you are on the field... Just plug in the battery and you will have the porcent of power lees on it. Plus is cheaper...
I have tested mine and the balance function is very inaccurate.
Has anyone checked if the watts readings are accurate? I think that they are too optimistic.
For example, for the NTM Prop Drive Series 2836 2200kv motor HK has the following data:
6x4 - 11.1V / 310W / 28.0A
My data are 6x4 - 11.1V / 330W / 27.0A
I think, you can't do thise. The only way, that you can use it with thise voltage, is to connect it between batteries (under 60 Volts each) and their serial connector.
It can be modified. Power for the MCU is taken from the battery leads, through a simple zenner/resistor regulator to bring it down to around 15volts, then through a 5volt regulator to the MCU. Changing the dropping resistor will allow higher voltage operation, changing the MCU's voltage divider resistor ratio will allow higher voltage sensing. For accurate reading of around 5A, it would be a good idea to swap out the current shunt. This can all be done with the stock firmware though custom woul
I have an arduino and it has a icsp port through which I can reprogram (flash) other hardware. Progrmming headers have usually more that 6 pins. Or there's just a serial out which spits out real time data, that I can forward to my pc through my arduino.
Yes it does, 6 pin though not in a standard configuration. Runs on an Atmega16 with 8mhz ext crystal. Lots of unused pins on the MCU. Just finished the firmware to output a servo signal with voltage and current limiting. Adjustable limiting from 0 to 100Amps with .1Amp accuracy. This should stop my Turnigy 6374 from overheating on my bike.
Hi Creamed_Emu, I want to use this meter to test battery as low as 2.0V. I think I need a separate power suppy for MCU. Can you identify the point where external power should be connected and the point where MCU's input for volatage sensing is located ?.
Yes you can find out the input power of the motor and you can get the rpm for propeller so that the rpm gives you the power from the load good wattmeter Iwill buy if it is stock.
Yes, in Watts. No memory function so you need to watch. Gives amps volts and watts - no problem to use if you have reasonable memory. So no smoking weed! If you are taling about FORCE, thats a different matter - ie thrust? If so, that's a different set up needed. This won't do that by itself.
Yes, You can connect battery - watt meter - ESC and measure watt with throttle up. Also you can measure amount of battery remain. Watt meter is necessary product for RC mania.
It's nice product.. also I have two kinds of more expansive wattmeter.. but, it's have more wide LCD pannel and so good seeable for me.. equalizing & balancing function is more useful for me.. thanks..

1 thumbs up!
Balancer totally out of calibration, i wonder if someone in factory check this box.
Get perfectly balanced battery with icharger 106B (not from HK), put in HK-010 and beep-beep-beep - your battery is unbalanced. Showing 3.88V-3.82V-3.82V. Is my icharger decalibrated that much?? I took voltmeter and it show me 1.77V-1.77V-1.77V. Impossible. I spend about 15 minutes to find my old voltmeter, (the one with mechanical gauge), but it measured the same as new multimeter. Strange.
Ok, so lets test again, i took another battery, (Zippy 2200 3S 20C) and put it to HK-010. Of course beep-beep - unbalanced. So a select balancing mode and wait for some time. After balancing end, HK-010 show perfectly balanced battery at 4.12V-4.11V-4.11V. BUT..
Both my voltmeters shows 4.00V-4.05V-4.05V. Same as icharger.
I wonder what wattmeter could show, can i trust wattmeter if balancer is totally crap? Make a sence. What now with this cheap and useless box? Send it for repair to HK? It cost more than box.. Leave money in HK and throw HK-010 to basket?
