I just purchased one of these used, and need the manual. The "files" tab claims to have a manual, but it is just for the ESC. Does anyone know where to download the real manual? thanks

Will this plane ever come in stock again
Jeffrey S.  3 points - 10/22/2012

Why isn't this listed as "P-38 Lightning w/ retracts plug and play"? That's what the aircaft is. Doing a quick search for "p-38 lightning" only brings up spare parts. I consider this as being stupid.
MikeHeliMad  65 points - 9/19/2012

Spare Prop Fix. Hi all I have managed to retro fit Master Airscrew 9*6 3 blades into the original spinner. Check out the photos in this section. All you need is a prop, some heatshrink (5 mm dia) and the back shell from the original propeller mounts. See Photos
 MikeHeliMad 65 points
P.S According to Banana hobbies, this plane (and therefore spares) are discontinued. Hence why I gave up on getting original spare blades. target=_blank>

Does theis plane have detachabe wings
 Flying Phoenix 24 points
No,it doesnt. Its impractical due to the twin booms. You would have to detatch the elevator as well. Its not a super large model anyway, and goes in most cars (Undercarts up)quite easily.
Surgerypending  64 points - 5/9/2012

Has anyone tried flying this plane on 4S with stock setup? Mine should be here next week.
 Flying Phoenix 24 points
Think you will be hard pushed to get a 4s in the compartment.A good 3s should be enough,as the airframe has its limitations. It is however a lovely model to fly,and comes in very well. The Durafly Vampire flies very similar..but faster.

Looks like one of my speed controllers went to speed controller heaven. Does this website have a suitable replacement?

You can use any 30A ESC. I got two Hobbyking SS (Simple Series) but i'd rather recommend spending a few more bucks for Turnigy Plush.

does this plane come with flap?
 __hobo 203 points
No, there are no flaps. But you honestly don't need flaps. Flies very nicely and lands very easily.
 magoo224 10 points
can it fly slow, really like to do slow fly infront and as near to me :)
 __hobo 203 points
It flies very well at slow speed. In fact, with the stock equipment it doesn't get very fast at all.

You can fly the plane at slow speed without problems so to land it, you don't need any flaps. Try it, you will like it.

what flight time would you get off a 3s 2200mah
 __hobo 203 points
about 10min. If you fly full throttle all the time then it's way less.

about 10- 15 minutes depding on your throttle managment

REALLY 10 minutes with 2200mah??????????????

I agree with Hobo and Michael, Though having said that, my motors were binding up a bit at first. 1. I placed a few washers behind the rear nut, so that if I had prop strikes (from the **** LG) the props and spinners didnt push back against the cowl. 2. I took out a shim from each motor at the rear of the shaft (take the circlip off and remove one shim) 3. I found the clearance in the middle of the ply mounts wasnt enough and had glue in the hole, so I drilled them slightly bigger and cleaned them up All these Greatly improved my flight times and was regularly getting 9 minutes of Mixed flying, ie some simple cruising about with nice slow looooow passes and some super hot low passes too... Both of which look absolutely fantastic with this model! Alas, mine had a Dirt Nap... Hopefully to be repaired and fly again when HK get off their backsides and get replacement props in stock!

 Chenz 1 points
Completely removed mine in the end.Trying to replace them is a real pain! Suggest strengthen retract covers & Glue them closed.I know it doesnt really answer your question about replacements, but you may wish to consider the "belly landing" option.
 Ek-trician 308 points
There is a set of air retracts that work very well for this plane on this site for $67 #OR025-00503 but I will warn you the stock mounts are no good, so you have to cut away allot of foam and cut-out and install 1/8" model plywood plates that will fit the new retracts, or the stock plastic/foam mounts will crush together and squish the foam untill they are so loose they will not function anymore. If you are an experienced modeler you will not have much trouble, as there is allot of room in the wheel wells. The electric retracts work well, and are easier to install (still need new plywood mount) but they are not as strong and heavier.

i have found once everything is out balsa reinforcement helps the structral integrity of your plane as well as helps it take a little harder landing but in most cases changing them out is a real pain

I have upgraded the motors to: A2814-6 40A 1250Kv SP Brushless Outrunner Motors

Dimension:35x36mm
Weight:96g
Motor shaft:4mm
KV:1250 RPM
Recommended prop: 10X4.7/ 9X4.5
Application:1000-1900g airplanes .

Set these up on a 40A esc with 8x6 props ( tri blade ) but works equally well on standard 2 blade props either on slow fly 8x6 or 9x6 blades, upgrade the lipo from 3s to 4s... It completely transforms this bird. Also use velcro on all hatches as this baby will really shift on this s

hello people I think this model really great. First But I wanted to ask whether the model any weakening or so, or something is very unstable? Second On the picture it looks like this model would be one piece or you can remove the airfoil with 1.40 m span because it fits so well into the car matrimonial not so, or?
 __hobo 203 points
Yes, it is one piece, not very handy.
AND A GREAT BUY A PLANE BECAUSE I SAW AND flew with a very stable
 Edge5403D 33 points
yes but how am I supposed to bring the model to the airfield? or adjusts the airman in a purely ford Mondeo?

Does anybody know which motors to fit? One of mine ceased service after a hard landing.
 SuperAussie 17 points
Yes, a glow engine, she goes quicker that way. Dont forget to replace the other one :)
 fizzer 9 points
HobbyKing productID: TP2409-18 is almost a direct replacement, but you should replace both just to ensure they're matched.
 Thrustline 18 points
You will want a 1150KV motor outrunner, HK has them. In a twin you must keep the engines matched so the torque is even or it will pull to one side or the other and will cause a crash.
 Beltpilot 34 points
The TP2409-18 is a good fit, but the threaded shaft is too short!!!
 Ek-trician 308 points
Forget the stock motors with the soft skinny shafts. They are too small and if you test them with the stock props on a watt meter they pull way too much current and will melt the motor mount back plate and or burn-up. Time to upgrade to stronger cooler running motors that will improve performance and last. If you are interested, read the motor upgrade answer I wrote for another P-38 owner above. Good luck!
clubedohobby  19 points - 5/31/2011

Alguem Brazuca já comprou e testou este aero? O que tem a dizer dele?
 Thrustline 18 points
Excellent flying aircraft, very smooth flying and as long as you are competent in flying a intermediate plane you will be able to fly this one too. Just do not slow it down alot on landing until you are comfortable in it's stall character. Good Luck!

spare parts would come from a kit version of this plane. Most of these foam ARFs and RTFs won't have parts list like Horizon Hobby (parkzone/eflight/hangar9). Some of the manufactures do sell parts, but I haven't seen very many consistently stocked in the 10 years I've been importing from Asia.

 MyDesign 15 points
This is a Hobby King exclusive. Being a boxed kit from China doesn't excuse them for not having parts. If they are the ones making the plane then they should have parts. If Great Planes sold a plane with out parts there would be hell to pay, yet here this company sits with a ***r customer service history and they are not backing their own product up with parts!? Why do people buy anything from them except batteries?

Will a 'Turnigy' 2200mA lipo of any 'C' fit into lipo well? Dimensions given on P38 site, are too small for listed 2200 sizes***. Will a little modification let a 2200 fit?

Hello, what is the exact type of propeller to p-38? can buy in HK?
 HellyFlyer 1249 points
Use 8X4, 10x5 or 14X7 APC type propellers or you may also go for the 3 blade ones
 kevin bagwell 69 points
Not yet, it looks to be a 9X5 or 9x6, I am wondering if the props for the B-25 and the Mosquito are the same type but I think those are 10x5, if you can't find them here Banana hobbies stocks the P-38 prop, you may have to call them if the website shows them out of stock.

Anyone know how to program these ESC's? I need to reset one of mine to defaults. Motors have uneven thrust.
 Flying Phoenix 24 points
Take the cowlings off and check the little grub screw on each motor mount. You should see that if these are overtightened it affects the free running of the motors..try this first.

Use a little Loctite, then set the screws so they just bite and centralise the motors.Check both motors spin evenly with the least drag. You will notice the more you tighten the harder the motor is to turn.

Just received my P-38 Lightning last week but I did not open the box and have a look at it until yesterday. It was very well packed and no shipping damage at all. when looking at the instruction book I noticed they were assembeling the airframe parts with RTV SILICONE adhesive, is that a good choice?
I also notoced that each wing had a tube type wing spar, should there be a spar joiner for that, or is it not required?
Both my motors were loose in the motor mount, but that was a good thing as i had to use locktite on the grub screws and tighten them.
 michael 6 points
i noticed alot of goofy stuff with mine when it came out of the box i reccommend that you check anything that was glued or screwed before you fly it that way you know you touched it. also as far as the gear goes i would say order a cheap set of metal retracts and change the stock plastic lockers to the metal it will save you alot of heartache

When will one of these planes be shipped to the USA Warehouse so that my order placed there 2 months ago can be completed?
 Geniuspic 8 points
After weighing my options - $12 more to order the in-stock item from China vs. perpetual backorder at the U.S. warehouse - I decided to order from China and at least get my hopefully awesome plane in a couple of weeks at the risk of shipping damage. I'll update after arrival.

11 thumbs up!
I gave 4 stars because the canopy was smashed. I had to add weight to the nose, plane was tail heavy. Once trimmed out the plane flies nice. One thing you have to watch for that some trim fixed was one motor has more power than the other...I fly on a old horse racing track in AZ. We keep it swept off and pretty good for a airstrip but had to lock and block the retracts down in order to taxi and land, just not strong enough. GOOD BUY...

For the money, this plane rocks. It has an impressive wingspan, great scale look, and good components. It flies like a trainer. The dual motors sound very cool!
It needs to be carefully inspected before the first flight (motors mounts and landing gear especially).
I just ordered my second one!
On my first P-38, I moved the front landing gear servos out of the nose, into the center bay of the plane. This works great and allows easy adjustment.

Great flying and looking model. Looks like my initial review of the issues with the crappy retracts retracts, peeling paint, bad factory glue job and wobbly motor mount issues was pulled by hobbyking. Unfortunate that HK choose to hide from the light of truth instead of using the information to make the supplier build a better model regardless of the lower price. Would buy if you have spare replacement mech retracts & dont mind lots of rework.
