Turnigy Accucel-8 150W 7A Balancer/Charger (USA Warehouse)

The Accucel-8150 is a Lipoly/LiFe battery charging workhorse. Capable of handling up to 8S, 7A or a maximum of 150W charging current plus it balances and discharges packs which is critical for keeping your expensive batteries in perfect condition.
This charger has a 12v input and can be used with a mains 12v power supply or your car battery when at the field.

Sent back for RMA, but backordered. They only gave me credit for the item, and NOT the return shipping. How many times have you gotten those pop-up from HK about how wonderful their warranty is? ****! Cannot wait for something better than HK to come along.

So does this Accucel-8 have the USB port? I actually want to chart charge/discharge characteristics of my batteries using the USB data. What about the temperature probe. What kind of probe do I need. Is there a SKU for one from Hobbyking that works with this?
 ALLAN 32 points
Yes the 8150 gas a mini USB port**I just received mine from HK two months ago. You will not be able to connect to your computer without a special USB cable, and you do NOT need to open up your charger or do the mod like for the Accucell 6. All you need is a mini USB cable and a Serial TTL to USB cable: it will have a standard size USB connector on one end and 4 wires on the other end* they sell them on HK, or search www for PL2303 (Prolofic) or similar. Cut the miniUSB cable in half to expose 4 USB wires, and connect ONLY two of them to the USB-TTL cable: black wire to black wire, and green wire on mini-USB coonected to the charger to the White wirre on the TTL-USB cable (i.e. TX from charger to the RX on TTL-USB cable). Download drivers from Prolific site and follow their very good instructions. Then download Logview and be sure to select English if you don't know German. It works on my PC and I've almost got it working on my Mac OS X (anyone know how to install DataExplorer on Mac/Linux???) The thermometer port seems to be giving off current, and the probe I bought from HK works when I test it with straight current, but I can't seem to get the charger to read from it when connected and changing LIPOs**maybe it's only supposed to work for NIMHs and others? I tried swapping the white and red wires on the Futaba cord but it didn't help. The charger still seems to read the internal temp of the batt ok, just not the external temp... Good luck!

Hi.
How loud is the fan? Does it have decent quality buttons?
Have the Turnigy Accucel 6 50W that is outstanding quality but would like a little more amps for charging bigger packs...
Thanks.
 Chad 5 points
The fan is barely audible, in a completely quiet room the most you hear is a soft buzz. The buttons are actually quite nice, they have a solid detent when pressed and are made of metal. I use a 6 way Paraboard for charging my lipos and run on the full 7 amps almost all the time and the charger has performed flawlessly. I would highly recommend this charger if you are looking for a faster charge and solid charger. Also i checked my packs with a multimeter on the first few balance charges an
 geekrawker 10 points
Its a tough little charger for the price. After owning this for about a year and some change, the fan has started to develop bad bearings making it slightly louder than normal. My buttons are plastic, however the switch that is depressed by the plastic is a nice gauge tactile switch. One of my plastic buttons fell out at the field. Using a plastic spacer (or dowel would work too) with a dab of ca remedied the missing button.

 Karl 1 points
Any of the power supplies in the USA Warehouse supply more than enough power to power this charger. In fact you should be able to power 3 of these chargers on the cheapest power supply(HobbyKing 350w 25A Power Supply (100v~120v) (USA Warehouse)).

Hi I bought one of these chargers and am having some problems. I already had one of these for some years. this new one the display sometimes is getting all types of symbols which makes it unreadable and have tos with off/on again. Even when it is working the display sort of has a lag i.e when nos are changing from 01,02 03 etc and so on. Can anyone help please?
 GlitchTracer 5 points
I've seen this on another charger and the unit had to be exchanged. The new unit was fine. I've had mine for almost 2 years and it's going strong. Contact customer support and set up a warranty claim.
 geekrawker 10 points
I had this happen to one of mine as well, it was just a bad solder joint on one of the screen data wires. easy fix, wires are super small and the casing didn't come completely clean when they made the joint in factory. Be careful and only open it up if you are familiar with electronics and high voltages! if its in warranty, definitely send it back. If your savvy though, take a look, might just be a loose connection like mine.
french_guy  5 points - 10/9/2011

I've had this charger for 2 years, but haven't used it much....But now, the discharge doesn't work: in discharge cycle, the fan is running but the display shows "Current = 0.0 A" Does somebody have an idea on what I should try, like maybe a reset function in the menu?
 Andrew 2 points
I hope this doesn,t sound like a dumb question but, is it possible the battery is already to close to its low end cutoff therefore the charger will not discharge it anymore? The charger will show any amps if it is not pulling any juice from the battery. Another thought would be to try to update the firmware in the charger and see if that helps.
 french_guy 5 points
I tried wit several batteries (NiMh and Lipo), and some of them were charged with another charger...
So I guess the problem comes form somewhere esle
Where do I find a new firmware, and do I download it?
Thanks

I have 5 Laptop chargers lying around the house - all of them have an output of 19.5v 3.34A - would that burn this charger up?
 CHRIS SV AZ 193 points
right on the front of the charger where it says the input voltage max of 18v 4amp . i am running this on my 25 amp power supply and charging 6s at 3 amp it is fine but at 6.5amp (max for 6s) it even puts a load on my 25 amp supply. so i would say 3.3amp input is not enough and 19.5v is too much.
 nickmig 7 points
Use a computer power supply with a power supply tester to keep it on or one of the power supply mods found with a quick google search.
 Charles 7 points
No you can not use that as your power supply. The charger requies at least 4 amps. My 25 amp power supply has no issuses running at maxium out put on the charger.

what type power supply for multi charge
 jhstanton 21 points
Any power supply that puts out 11 to 14v and rated around 5amp will work very nicely. You will have to put on new ends to the pwer supply so you can connect it to the 8150 charger.
 JD 7 points
charger is easy to use, especially for a novice like myself. I use it for RC 2 cell trucks, and 3 cell planes. For 2 cell use, you must shave off a small portion of the balancing plug on the battery, but it works fine this way.

I never use all the cable come with it any way, the main cable you need is the charging lead from the charger to your lipo . I throw all the other cable away

What's the deal? I wrote a fairly lengthy positive review on this charger and it got kicked out with a message that said it was too short. It was longer than a lot of the other reviews. I guess they have all the positive feed back they need.

I tried plugging my 2s plug into the 3s port and it said "connection brake" so I tried another 2s and I got the same code. I can't express how unhappy I am right now. it's not looking good for me being a customer very long. I emailed and I got a responce that it might take a week for an accual responce, nice!

 Tom R. 8 points
You are not connecting it correctly. All leads on the battery needs to be hooked to the battery charger, meaning that the balance connectors and the charge connectors need to be hooked to the charger. I did the same thing that you did and I sent the charger back to China to find out that I was at fault. And had to pay shipping twice. Just make sure you hook up all wires and it should work.
 dskeigley 10 points
I plugged my 2s batteries into the 3s port all the way toward the black wire side and it balanced it no problem.
 KILROY 5 points
Lipos are sensitive and dangerous if charged incorrectly. You can not charge a 2 cell like a 3 cell LiPo!!! You need to use the correct balancer adaptor and settings. Please read the instructions for the charger and the battery you are charging. Also, a 2 cell Lipo will only be 7.4V and a 3 cell will be 11.1V. Remember, Lipo cells are 3.7V per cell.
 Jason 1 points
You can charge them just fine with the charger, you just can't use the balance charging feature.
 dskeigley 10 points
When I wrote my reply about plugging the 2s battery into the 3s balance port I didn't charge as a 3s, I set the charger voltage to charge 7.4v for 2s and have been balancing 2s batteries that way for a year now. No problems. Always balances perfectly.
 Ea155 1 points
i reacently bought the turnigy acceel-8150 and i like the charger. all i run in my car is 2 cell and im able to balance charge. just have to shave off the tabe on balace plug so it plugs in all the way to right of balance port. or there are balane adapters that will plug into the the 6 or 8 cell balance port and allow you to go down to 2 cell without modifying battery plug
joeseif  1 points - 2/23/2011

why is there no charge port for 1s or 2s lipos? Why? Why not call it a 3s - 8s charger and save us the trouble. So I guess I have to force the 2s plug into the 3s port? How long till it brakes or I make a mistake and burn my house down?
 Tom R. 8 points
You are connecting your battery wrong, I did the same thing and sent the unit back to China to find out that I was connecting it wrong. This is what you do to stop getting the "connection brake" error. Unlike the regular charger , like the one that comes with your Heli, Plane , etc... you need to connect both sides of the battery. Meaning, the balance lead and the charge leads. all wires on the battery needs to be hooked to the charger. The directions don't explain it like it should. This will fix your problem.
 KILROY 5 points
1s lipos do not need to be balanced since there is only 1 cell. Balancing refers to equalizing the voltage between each cell. Remember, each cell has 3.7V. A single cell will be 3.7V, 2 cell [2S] will be 7.4, 3 cell [3S] 11.1. So “balancing” refers to the charger being able to keep the voltage equal between the individual cells of a battery.
Stephen  1 points - 2/19/2011

how can i use this with my 2s turnigys?
 JAYHUC 39 points
just use the 3 cell port. just make sure you put it all the way to the right. black side.
 Greg 12 points
On mine you can just scroll through and select for 2s and what amp you want to charge at
 sparkie 325 points
Just select your battery from the menu, and plug into the 2S connector. If you do not have the correct connector you may have to get an adapter. They are cheap here on HK if they do not fit.
 dwvabeach 66 points
Plug them into the charge ports and go to town.

Yes you can.
 prateek 66 points
just plug the battery to the charger thats simple
 dewayne 1 points
yes it will work
 Jason 1 points
You charge them.....just not balance charging
 JD 7 points
you will have to shave off the rt side tab on the top of the balancing plug, but then it will plug right in and work fine, mine balances the cells perfectly

a 12volt car batterie and a batterie charger does fine
 sparkie 325 points
Any 12 Volt DC power supply, or for that matter any power supply that puts out between 12 and 18 volts. In reality, to start off you do not need a power supply. Just hook it up to your car battery. I have run upto 4 chargers similiar to this for hours off of my car battery and not had problems starting the car. GL to you on this one.
 dwvabeach 66 points
Search for the 12v power supply. They are less than $10. Or you can order a laptop powersupply from Amazon for about the same price. Just make sure your input voltage doesn't exceed the max for the charger.
 Deano 1144 points
12v DC - so a car battery or AC-DC converter.
 gIMpYchUM 4 points
The car batteries work great. Any 12-18v power supply with at least a 10 amp rating will work. Avoid the laptop power supplies. Most of them are 19v (slightly above spec) and only kick out 3-4 amps which isnt enough for a 7 amp charger. Another option to look into if you are a little bit of a geek is to use an old computer power supply. If you can solder a deans connector on your battery you could make one work. Just google making a 12v power supply with a computer power supply unit. Ther

on the side you see all the white plugs for up to 8S lipo JST-XH plug (the white connector on your battery) The battery connector you normally plug into your ESC is also connected to the charger(XT-60 plug included)SO THE ONLY THING YOU MIGHT NEED TO DO IS TO MAKE AN OTHER CONNECTION IF YOU ARE NOT USING XT-60 CONNECTOR AS A BATTERY OUTPUT PLUG. You also can use the croccodile clips to directly connect to your battery (using this method on 4mm gold plugs), make sure the polarity is correct if you do it like this!!!
 Sawdust 1605 points
No extra adaptors needed for those batteries you mention, the ballance plug on your battery plugs straight into the side of this unit instead of having a seperate adaptor board. On the right side of the unit there's a bunch of ballance sockets to suit a range of cell counts.

This does not answer my question, I konw from experiance that the physical size of the balance taps on the Thunder Power batteries are different than some of my other batteries, I currently use a "Blinky" balancer with an adapter for the Thunder power batteries. I do not want to use the balance connecttions on the batter charger so the charger connections wont wear so quickly, I want to use balance boards that will plug into the charger...so my questions remains...which balance boards do I need to purchase for this charger ?

you can balance on any of the ports. All you need to do is trim the left tab on top of the plug. It does not matter which port as long as the black wire is on the right of the balance port.

Really used the USB port on the older 8150. I developed some software to read, decode and display all the information sent by the charger and have the ability to save battery charge / discharge data to an Excel file for graphing & archiving. Guess I will have to find a different brand that still has USB output. Hugh

I have had this charger for almost a year now and it's been great. I've been running 4 cell lipo packs with no problem. Recently I bought some 2 cell lipo to run in my short course truck but found out that this charger does not have a 2 cell balance port!?! I'm wondering if theres a way to balance a 2S lipo using the 3S port??

The reason why i gave 4 stars is no balance port for 2S Lixx batteries other negative features(laud fan, no usb port, no temperature probe aren't important. very similar software like icharger, great charger and excellent balance mode great price. If u need good cheap charger i will recommend u Turnigy Accucel-8150. One of the best thing which i bought in RC world.
