Hobbyking Pitts-S12 Python (Yellow/Blue) EP 1370mm (ARF)
Hobbyking Pitts-S12 Python (Yellow/Blue) EP 1370mm (ARF)

For many RC pilots, there is something really special about flying a Bi-Plane, and there is plenty about the Hobbyking Pitts S-12 ARF that is special! The Pitts Python is perhaps the ultimate Bi-Plane and this ultra high quality kit really does this amazing aerobatic aircraft justice, not only in terms of scale looks but also performance.

Just look at the quality of the balsa/ply construction and you will see a strong but ultra-lightweight design, and this theme continues throughout the model, carbon fiber control horns, composite/ply motor mount, pull/pull rudder control with rigging wire to stiffen the verical & horizontal stabilizer, glass-fibre wheels spats with large lightweight wheels, alloy cabane and so on.

The Hobbyking Pitts S-12 is designed specifically for electric flight and is also very practical, quick to field assemble, it features massive removable canopy with a quick release latch and a huge battery tray. This is a good size model that will require a 5s set up for sport flying, however, to get the best from this model, we would reccomend a low kv 6s set up.

I am about to purchase this model I’*m trying to find the right motor. I don’*t want to use any of the easy match 60 motors that have been suggested I believe the power will be too marginal and the magnets come loose. This is a big model I found this bad boy NTM Prop Drive 50-50 580KV / 2000W I believe this will give me power and quality I’*m looking for. I like my models to be a little bit over powered. Advice please any suggestions.

1. If you read nothing else read this- the centre of gravity in the instructions is WRONG! It should be 108 mm from the leading edge of the top wing. This is a safe starting position and then adjust to suit you. 2. Either the metal struts supporting the wing at the centre are too long or the support frames at either end of the wings are too short. I left the metal supports the supplied length and made new support frames to support the wings at the edge. Others have cut the metal to suit and used the original end support frames. I used the recommended motor & a 16x10 APC prop with 6s 4000 mah 20c lipo with red brick 100amp ESC. The model performs well on this set up- but others have commented that it will give unlimited vertical- not true& my model is below the recommended weight with the recommended set up. 3. The metal wheel struts are too large to go in the cut out in the fuselage- you have to open it up. 4. This model can be quite fiddly to assemble but is well worth the effort in the end. 5. The wood & glue (or amounts of glue used) isn’*t as good as some areas crumble easily- I recommend you run PVA glue around all the visible joints & reinforce the landing gear area. 6. I compare this model in flight to the sebart range- possibly an unfair comparison- but the Pitts isn’*t as good- however the Sebart range cost a lot more. 7. All in all, with some work, this is a good model given some basic failings (lack of glue in joints & top wing supports too long/short depending on how you fix it). The CofG in the instructions is a basic error & should be corrected. 8. This is a lot of model for the money & flies well once the correct CofG is implemented.

Seems to me that the Rimfire 1.2 is a lot of motor for the plane. I'm planning on using an eflite 60 because I have one sitting around. An alternate is the Rimfire 80. I like the Rimfires Alan
Gregorio  3 points - 2/24/2013

My congratulations to HK for this plane!!!! Flies spectacular with a Rimfire 1.2 electric engine on six cells, 5000 mah. Best regards to everybody HK friends.

Ive happen to damage the clear canopy. HK says no spares. i would like to avoid buying a whole new plane. any suggestions?
 T6Texanaus 298 points
Make your own from acetate sheet from a business shirt box or a 2L coke bottle or from thermoplastic sheet sold in frontline hobbies newcastle and make a balsa 'plug' the right shape and heat form/vaccum form the plastic to the plug you made. Depending how bad the damaged one is you could 'mould' a plaster plug from it.

 Gregorio 3 points
The propeller I did use was a 16 X 8 electric APC. Witha Rimfire brushless engine. Perfect Sport flight and even 3D flight with it.
henrik4  129 points - 1/21/2013

Any spare parts available? e.g. Wings Just a reminder that the C/G should be at the leading edge of the bottom wing. *NOT* 6.5 centimeters (or 65 millimeters) from the bottom leading edge as stated in the manual!! Best 'flying feeling' was achieved with: Motor: Turnigy G60 400 KV ESC: Dlux 70A Propeller: 18 x 6 Turnigy wood prop (LY90518-18x6) Sounds good, looks good and was near perfectly balanced on arrival! Battery: 6S 5000 mA (5A) nano-tech 35-70C Wheels: Du-bro air filled 4.00" Ruggedised wheel mounts with 2.5mm thick carbon fiber plates (CFWFS3x1x2-5) Ruggedised bottom of fuselage with a "zig zag" pattern using 10mm carbon fiber sqare tube (CFS-10) Ruggedised motor mount (far too fragile) with carbon fiber plates (CFWFS3x1x2)

 Michel 2 points
That answers my question! I wanted this bi-plane but wanted it gas!
 Marc Volovic 65 points
In theory - if you want the NOISE - you could put in a sound unit. Costs quite a bit of money, but sounds great!
 Marc Volovic 65 points
For example - on this site - TBS Sound Unit. Out of stock at the moment and NOT cheap. M
 Gregorio 3 points
Please try electric* no hassle with cleaning, no noise, no worrying about dead engine, you can stop and start any times you want, no swall wood with grease, no worrying with humidity to start your engine nor weather nor air temperature problems. Greg

That should be right but don't be too surprised if it's a bit different. The steering servo they recomended for my Baja buggy didn't fit without modifying the mouting.

rats I just spent 500$ on planes this week and then this one comes along. Still have 2 planes still in the box and 2 on the work table I hope to have in the air next week. I guess I will have to wait a couple months.
 at6trainer 52 points
Hey Hobby King Guys! Any chance this plane will be for sale in USA as its total size is to large to ship to USA??? Thanks,
boostoman  315 points - 5/14/2011

HK can you please post the instructions manual in the files sections.
boostoman  315 points - 5/14/2011

when u say dry weight do you mean the weight without any equipments on it or the weight with all the equipment and no batteries or fuel?? i need to know the frame weight because i need to do wing loading calculations for it.
 dreamtimestudio 24 points
It means with nothing in it. The final weight would depend on the set up you choose.
 boostoman 315 points
i can calculate /-10% the weight of the plane ready to fly because I already know the weight of all the components (servos, batteries etc)that i.m installing in the plane.i just need the info on the weight of the plane empty.
 dreamtimestudio 24 points
The empty weight is what they mean by dry weight, if those figures are critical for you then I'd beware about any specs these guys list.

when is this going to be available in the USA wharehouse
 ellenbee 11 points
Hi, My Pitts is about 3.5 kg take-off weight, using a 5000mAh lipo. The HK dry weight figure will be inaccurate because the model is 1470mm wingspan, not 1370mm. It flies very nicely, by the way.
 Gregorio 3 points
Please, how come your plane have enlarged 100 mm in wingspan??? Greg
 ellenbee 11 points
You'll have to ask HK that question. All I can tell you is I've been using a ruler for many decades, so I think I know what I'm doing. I checked the distance between the wingtips several times and MY Pitts had a wingspan of 1470mm. Whether other Pitts are the same, I wouldn't know

Hi any estimate to have it on DE Warehouse?
 F100CUFFLINK 886 points
ABOUT 3 WEEKS I HERD HOPFULLY SOONER I LIKE THIS A LOTE ,couple guys said the color looks cheap ,i think there nuts.
 Darix339 26 points
I love thees e colors? Great in the sky!

When will these be in the US
 HobbyKing_Admin 8862 points
Around 8 weeks.
 bigtiii 65 points
No the Blue Angels' planes look good. They use Navy blue which would've been a better choice. It's not just the colors, it's the use of these colors. In a scheme like this one the black and yellow work better. Also....the word "Python" doesn't scream "cover me with blue and yellow!" Cufflink "you're" Sawdust. I drive a blue truck and I love blue and I love yellow. Just don't love how it was utilized on this plane.
 Southbend 151 points
You got make a 100" er wing span -sell like hot cakes in the USA-if you keep the price good, come on HK step up to the big boys****-
Styxxx  44 points - 5/9/2011

Will you get the other (I believe this factory makes two versions) color-scheme as well?
 HobbyKing_Admin 8862 points
Sorry, we only made 1 colour.
It's similar to the *other* factory you speak of.
 buzzard 18 points
I really do not like this colour scheme. It would look a lot better in red, white, blue and black. The yellow and blue looks very cheap.

The color looks great. Parramatta fans are going to love this one. Pertek down the side and a few well placed eels.

 bigtiii 65 points
Ugh....horrible color choices and you can't argue with me because I paint cars for a living. So if you like those colors together you just have bad taste. :) Looks cheap like Buzzard said.
 spitfire2010 640 points
You people are insane :)
 Sawdust 1605 points
I must have terrible taste because I think it looks great in those colours and I should know because I drive a car someone painted, a blue car :)
 Fugitive_Bill 418 points
The EELS can go jump, they have ruined my chances in the footy tipping comp this year! - But dumb me kept tipping them, I figured they had win one eventually. I don't mind the colours of this plane and like how they call the U/C covers 'Spats' and not 'pants' also the dual Metric/Imperial measurements.
 Fugitive_Bill 418 points

 boysie 44 points
Well Truman, judging by the colour schemes of some of the cars around here the painters must be using a braille colour chart. Love the colours and go the Eels.
 F100CUFFLINK 886 points
((((((((TRUMAN)))))))) your nuts? just cause you paint cars for a liveing dosent mean you know colors ,this is a very good sceem i think it is very visable that is a good thing ,and its a metter of opinion, i have a friend that paints cars for a living also and he thinks its very sharp, but its a plane soppose to look insane , the USA AROBATIC TEAM HAS THIS ALSO .
 Mustang Sally 1084 points
hmmm, guess that the Blue Angels have no taste either than...Blue and yellow fits nicely together especially for a Aerobatic plane.(with white smoke)
 Nick-charles 22 points
I agree with Fugitive_Bill the colour scheme is not bad, and also its good to see HK using the English term Spats for the wheel fairings, we english call our underwear pants lol.
 Nick-charles 22 points
HK could you add a photo of the under side, also with a hand in the photo to give an idea of the scale.
 Nick-charles 22 points
HK it would also help sales if you stocked the covering film, and listed the colours in the model discription. even the best of us have thoughs little rough landings.
 sfactor1 942 points
painting cars for a living (u don't choose what car to paint and u don't choose what colour to paint other ppls cars) means u r NOT an expert. experts r the artists and designers....if a person was a nurse, that pretty much guarantees that they r not a doctor....
Mustang Sally  1084 points - 5/9/2011

Ahaaa, finally!!!! Well done HK! Now, wouldn't this be nice with a 20cc RCG?

Great video - friendly suggestion - show it to us like you're not gonna resell it - go ahead and take the bits out of the plastic and lay them out so we can see. Also - what's that piece at 3:25? I'm not sure I understand what thats for?
 HobbyKing_Admin 8862 points
heayj, it will be in the scratch and dent section next week. wink wink.
 Mustang Sally 1084 points
Heavyj, those parts are the cabanes, they interconnect the upperwing to the fuselage.
 Spitfire83 5 points
Colors are ok but I agree with truman black and yellow would make this look absolutely wicked. Looking forward to seeing it in the Aus warehouse, hopefully by then we will have some reviews and in-flight footage
 Sylvain 124 points
It's really a pity that the shipping is so expensive, else I would have probably buy one. Around 100$ to ship in canada in EMS, the plane is nearly 240$ ! Still a bargain ? not sure.
 sfactor1 942 points
hk fails to realize that the main reason ppl buy stuff here is for the prices....when u factor in shipping (only a moron wouldn't), sometimes they put themselves into a whole different price bracket which essentially removes themselves from the competition. as for shipping stuff from the usa to canada, is that supposed to be a joke? a plane like this would cost almost $200 to ship. i wonder if hk has sold ANY plane from usa to canada? hk might as well charge $2000 for ups shipping

1 thumbs up!
The wingspan of the Pitts is 1470mm, not 1370 mm as stated by HobbyKing. It's a big model for a bipe. Unsurprisingly, there's good and bad. The completed model is excellent, especially for the price. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone who's read the full review on RCgroups. Search on HobbyKing Pitts s12 Python

Manual is wrong about the C/G (center of gravity). If you follow the recommended value {65mm from leading edge of the bottom wing} then you are sure to place this model back to a kit form! Many little quirks found while assembling this otherwise beautiful model. Turnigy Dlux 70A 16x8 CF propeller from HK, Turnigy G60 400 KV gives this model plenty of thrust. 5S 5A battery Better to strengthen the bottom floor with HK 10x10mm square CF tube.
