70mm EDF Fighter Jet - Fibreglass 620mm (ARF)

The Hobbyking 70mm EDF fighter jet certainly looks the part and as a result of the quality construction, is a very capable high speed model jet. This jet was designed to be a dogfighter and this model sports an all moving tailplane and good size aileron's to give the RC pilot the kind of maneoverability that this fighter  is famous for. Wing/elevator construction is Foam core/sheet balsa, the fuselage, intake, canopy and vertical stab are composite, the fan cover is removable and an eflux tube sheet is included.

This is an affordable and practical high performance scale jet that will give you many hours of fun, a 70mm fan unit is included and the total build cost should be low for such a nice quality model. Great looks, low build cost, quality construction, great flyer and of course ballistic performance, what more could you ask for!

Hello all, I bought this from the american warehouse and have been working on it for the last 2 months. I had to make my own landing gear out of parts I had from other planes. I think it turned out ok and lookforward to flying this weekend.
 Riccardo 12 points
tell some impression how it fly!

Riccardo, I did my flight line testing and had to re-engineer the front landing gear. High speed passes are good on ground. Just haven't flown yet. Will when the weather clears up.
 Riccardo 12 points
wow nice painting!!! I will wait your next fly

Hi what retracts can I add to this model? for my aplication I needed with retracts
 JUAN 8 points
under the hard and acc you will find retracts and there are some for the f16,f18, etc 70mm EDF
 -MLG- 387 points
NO retracts, wings are too narrow- you have to bungee launch it,..
JUAN  8 points - 9/29/2012

I am building this plane but dont know if it will fly, however I would like to add retracs, lightweight, do you think it will decrease considerably the performance of this plane?
 H-KING_SCOTT 5161 points
If you fly off a grass strip, it is probably not worth it, we do have lightweight retracts for the F-16 however.

hi, I appreciate your advice, I bought this set, It is light weight and I want to modify them www.link What retracts do you recommend?

hello HK, any chance to get some spare parts? I would need a spare right wing... Tkx
 bent71 3 points
This one is so cheap you could buy a complete plane as spare, and pick the parts you need. I will probably do that for this jet!
 JUAN 8 points
Hi, till now there are not spare parts, but if you have the airplane I can reccomendyou to build the wing yourself, I dont know if the wing is made from balsa and cover with a film of fiberglass. I think it is not so hard if you copy the exact shape, I would like to see the broken wing to have a better idea of the better building process.
 starefly 28 points
Already re-built * A/C is flying quite fine !
 JUAN 8 points
what configuration you used?
 starefly 28 points
Check in the review tab you will get the answer !! :) Cheers

Has anybody succeeded to actually get this thing into the air? I attempted to fly it with reccomended motor and esc and it just didnt have enough balls to stay up. I read that the 3 blade fan needed a higher kv motor so I got a 5 blade fan and it blew apart in about 5 seconds. Im not putting any more money into this one until I can be assured it will at least not be underpowered let alone fly
 -MLG- 387 points
Well then you can try to fly it when you will have a lot of snow (if you have it in your country), or just go for it
davidgarcal  7 points - 2/12/2012

I managed to put it in flight but arrived at a distance and do not distinguish whether this face up or down
 -MLG- 387 points
And no it's broken? This fast planes are recomandrd to be painted bottom in a diferend color.
davidgarcal  7 points - 1/30/2012

a nice but very heavy aircraft in flight, a lot of power to put it in flight, does not convince me
davidgarcal  7 points - 1/18/2012

I bought this jet, and only needed to hold the motor. How sujetais the engine?
 -MLG- 387 points
I recommend plug and fly alloy edf 70

I ask this fiber f16, I advise Someone You Can combination of motor, esc battery and put the paragraph that this plane travels at the speed of sound?

quiero pedirme este f16 de fibra,me puede aconsejar alguien que combinacion motor ,esc y bateria poner para que este avion viaje a la velocidad del sonido?
seemore74  7 points - 11/15/2011

Ok, someone asked before but here I go, how do you work out the C of G on this baby? Where do you measure it from & what is the measurement?
 hasan 54 points
ok what i usually do when its impossible to find info on a plane... you build a flat platform with two sticks on each side that are wide enough to pu the plane on and it much touch only center of the wings stand would look something like this |_| make sure all the electronics are installed.. motor/servos/esc/and whatever you want to put. only after that you put this plane on the stand and blance it so that the front and back stay parallel to the ground...
 Peter 47 points
i think this is not the info seemore has expected ... think he like to know WHERE the correct CG is for this plane ... i can't give you the answer - only what i will do to get it: use the 1/3 rule ... take the length of the wing where it is mounted to the fuse - and mark the 1/3 point seen from the leading edge ... this will be a good choose for the first flight .. you will see the behavior of the plane - follow the well known method to adjust the correct cg (compare normal and invert flight, see what happen at no and full throttle, .....) the correct cg for my two f-16 (other size and type) is nearly arround this point - so it will be a good staring point ...

Thanks Peter, this is what I wanted to know, I'll try this method out
 slaanesh 424 points
CoG is between 70mm and 75mm back from the leading edge of where the wing joins to the fuselage.
Craig  6 points - 10/30/2011

does it come with landing gear
 Ashleigh 1 points
No landing gear supplied, this one is a bungee launch or hand launch only i think the 90mm is the only one that comes with landing gear

can we hand lunch on this jet ?
 hasan 54 points
any jet under 1000mm with a good set up can be hand lunched... just watch your thrust to weight ratio.
 slaanesh 424 points
I intend to hand launch. Keep the weight to about 1200g max and give it a good, quality power system. ie. WeMo Minifan and HET 2W-18 motor.
 Tartago 482 points
Also a good option is the new Change Sun 70mm 10 blade.

Hello received mine. Packing and quality are good. Finish from my point of view is better than HET one. I weighted mine: Fuselage:363g Elevator:37g wing: 91g Fin: 73g Turbine (unbalanced):65g Canopy: 25g Exhaust cone: 22g Accessories: 52g Total weight: 728g A/C looks good but RED CARD because there is no instruction. Please HK but instructions on-line.

Hi does it come with the Thunderbird paint scheme or grey like pic? Because some posted a build slide and it was the Thunderbird scheme.(look in the file tab).
 starefly 28 points
Grey like picture. Paint is great!
 apolmc 173 points
Does it say anywhere who makes it then we can google it for the manual. I ordered mine July 15 it still has not left HK
 starefly 28 points
Check in files tab I put construction pictures from prodesign.
 apolmc 173 points
Ok thanks I guess that is all we have to go by. People on RCgroup seem to have trouble with the elevators how did you do starefly?
 starefly 28 points
Work is currently in progress, I have currently only glued the balsa bloc yesterday. I think that I will glue a brass tube in which I will put the elevator axes. I think the drilling not be symmetrical so it allow some adjustment. Will see if it work...
 apolmc 173 points
Yes I just got my kit today. I see that it will be hard to drill the holes perfectly perpendicular and as you said semetrical. I wish they had pre-drill the holes.
 apolmc 173 points
Starefly how did you mount the EDF unit? There is no mounting hardware in my kit.
 starefly 28 points
I made a balsa balsa block hard wood then glued it on the fuselage

How much does the empty airframe weigh???

I bought one so should have the answer to weight soon!
 pikasiak 109 points
If you are fast because of stock less
 slaanesh 424 points
My F-16 has arrived today.
I will weigh the airframe components tonight and update this discussion.
 pikasiak 109 points
what weight www.link
 slaanesh 424 points
Fuselage = 386g
Canopy = 22g
Wings (both) = 85g
Horiz Stabs (both) = 33g
Vert Stab = 71g
Tailcone = 21g
Total airframe with nothing else in it is about 620g.
 slaanesh 424 points
Battery compartment size is 160mmx40mmx45mm. Could also put larger flatter batteries in easily as the shape of the fuselages widens so up to 60mm wide would probably be no problem.
starefly  28 points - 7/12/2011

What kind of battery with a het 2w20 ? 4s 3300mah or 4s 4000mah ? 2nd one not too heavy ?
 H-KING_SCOTT 5161 points
I would think 4000mAh would be too much.
Flavio_TGRC  514 points - 7/10/2011

not meant to have gear ,it bungy or throw i have to say ,and on the underside of wing it dont show gear pockets.

 vettster 218 points
Definantly NOT a hand launcher. Ive had 2 very simly in the past and they need a lot of speed to get her up. This is an improvment over the HET version in my opinion because of the ailerons. On 5s with a 2w-20 80a esc and HET fan, I was getting over 125mph with ease. The Price if fantastic!
 vettster 218 points
also..you will need to add a spliter bar in the intake just like the real one. The spliter bar will keep the intake from collapsing from the EDFs suction, and add support on landing. It is also a very good place to install your bungee hook. Been there, done that
 apolmc 173 points
vettster this thing has no instruction manual do you know who makes it? At least we can find it online if we know who makes it.
 vettster 218 points
I dont have a clue who makes this one. But it looks identical to one I bought about 3 years ago. It flew just fine, but was for sure heavier than the HET version. Im not knocking it. Infact Im want to buy it, but I have other larger projects on the go. Cant beat the price
 apolmc 173 points
I found out it's made by ProEDF and saw a video of it . It is damn fast. No manual yet though.
 apolmc 173 points
Oh they just have pictured instructions that is in the tab no written one.
 F100CUFFLINK 887 points
your best shoot with this is bungy launch.
KEEP IT LITE best way to go.
Ihave seen guys hand launch but with more power, but unsafe .
klauziii  24 points - 7/10/2011

Why does i need four Servos? Ailerons and elevators belong together on this Model or? Like a Delta?
 jason 9 points
you need 2 servo's for ailerons and 2 servo's for elevators it's an all moving tailplane
 F100CUFFLINK 887 points
its called "flying tail " and yes what iason said
aalope2001  170 points - 7/10/2011

Belly lander! :(. Why? This plane had so much potential.
 sking0369 57 points
***r mans retracts. Cheaper and lighter. Just be sure to make sure engine is not turning when you touch down in the grass with the intake on the bottom.
 apolmc 173 points
It is like a phase 3 F-16 that has been modded for you but wish it could fit a 6s 2650mah nano.

Is the recommended motor from HK strong enough? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh
_viewItem.asp?idProduct=17231
 ANLUCAS 147 points
I ordered this motor a week ago and they were advertised as 1000w. Now they are rated 600w. The 3000kv of this is not enough for 4S and the 3-blade edf. There arent many good fit motors by HK. These 2 would do : KB28-47-09S and HXT2835-3900.

Cyclone power 4100kv 1100 watt motors would be the best option but HK does not sell them.
 ANLUCAS 147 points
The RCLander DPS (LEDF-3580) sold by HK is also a very ood option but you throw away the EDF.
 Rui 1 points
I agree! Hobby king DPS 70mm 10 blade is the right fan for this job! It will increase the weight but the power... oh my God! Great power!!
boostoman  315 points - 7/9/2011

can you install landing gears on this plane?
 apolmc 173 points
Too small but anything is possible if you have time to mod it.
BEST ANSWER CREDIT AWARDED
ANLUCAS  147 points - 7/9/2011

Great looking kit. A bit on the small side though. With the high speed 3-blade edf provided, we need at least a 3800kv 1000w motor to get enough rpm and thrust to fly. A 3000KV or 3200KV motor means a 5S setup which is heavier. That means 4S 2200 40c lipo packs are the best bet.
Alternatively the rclander 68mm EDF/motor combo looks ideal...
 mikey3d 22 points
I agree, now waiting patiently for the 90mm composite F-16. Anyone have an idea who makes this? Too small for retracts?
 wynocha 1388 points
I know only two 90mm composite F-16 #1 airpower #2 HET retracts ready and next i hope HobbyKing.
 Erich 3 points
Is the recommended Motor from HK enough?
 ANLUCAS 147 points
The recommended motor is not good for the supplied 3-blade edf. The 3-blade edf needs a higer kv motor.

The 2226-3000 motor would be a good match to the HKEDF70 fan but on this plane it would not be enough....
 Erich 3 points
So which motor would you recommend me?
 bent71 3 points
I finally received this today!
I have identified the following modifications to be done:
- yaw-control* will look in to building a complete new rudder section possibly with magnet fastening so it can be removed for transport.
- Retracts* replace the fan/motor access hatch with a new in alu that also fits retracts... still have to work out the nosewheel

- Lights.
 Carlos 15 points
This EDF is too heavy for handlaunch, I setup with 6904 EDF,2w20 brushless motor and 3000mah nanotech ,all weight over 1400gm.
My HET F16 same setup only weight 1200gm.
 Flavio_TGRC 514 points
Hei Pavcon! When USA RC Jets will be back online?
 jeff125 40 points
Does this one need a thrust tube, and will a medium size 5cell fit?
 Rui 1 points
Hi Jeff125

I used a thrust tube but not with the supplied sheet. Used sone light plastic sheet wrapped with hobby king 25mm fiber tape. Worked great! Better compression of the air and greater jet sound!
My setup used nanotech 6cell 2650mah with the alloy 70mm 10 blade fan sold here at hobby king too! Flies like a bullet!

Ok first off there are no directions. Alot of the assembly is up to you for example its not clear where the edf unit goes or how it mounts. Same with the servos, there doesnt seem to be spot for them. The canopy doesnt have any way to mount it that I can see. It comes with magnets but where do they go? No landing gear, you get what in the images and nothing more. It will be a fun project for some and something that never gets in the air for some others.

It finally took the air after an unlucky first attempt during which I broke a wing. It has to be bungee launched with my setup to get a good elevator response on start. Setup: - EDF FAN 6904 - Motor: HET 2W20 - LiPo 3300mAh turnigy 30-40c - 100Amps ESC - CG 70mm at wing root - Elevator 18mm travel - Airleron 7mm travel Behavior in flight is pretty good but need to be trimmed pitch up. Plane is fast and you easily lost him if you go too far away due to its small size.... First landings are a bit hard as the plane is coming fast but after few runs you are able to master beast ! :) Nice little jet with good flying characteristics for the price, I will recommend !
