The HobbyKing J3 Cub is a faithful representation of this famous civil aviation icon, that will appeal to both experienced pilots and beginners looking for a nice scale model to learn on. Excellent flight performance is guaranteed as well as good flight times. A great looking model both on the ground and in the air.
This is an easy to assemble, plug and play model, that will have you out and flying in next to no time. All that you will require to complete the model is a 800~1200mAh 3s Lipoly battery and your own Transmitter and Receiver (Tx/Rx). All the general hardware (push rods, horns, screws etc) are included to get your model underway. The HobbyKing J3 Cub features scale engine detail, pilot, a bungee style landing gear and scale cub wheels.
Sbjcthawk if you would like you voice heard a little louder, go to the OPEN FORUM (Tab at the top of page). I there is a topic" What do you want to see in your local warehouse". Please consider putting your request in there too!
The instructions say to glue the horizontal stabilizer/elevators assembly to the fuselage with the provided glue, but it is held in place with 4 screws so I did not bother with the glue. Normally, I use my own 5 minute epoxy instead of the supplied glues.
I just got this J3 Cub and want to upgrade to larger wheels for grass landings. How do you remove the yellow plastic end caps on the wheels? I assume these either hold the wheels on the axle, or there is a nut under the cap. Thanks RvE
Use a flat-headed screwdriver and screw them out, on the center of the hub reads "CUB" right in the middle of the "U" there is a line that fits a flat-headed screw driver...
My plane does not have the slot on the hubs. The slot is also not visible on the website pics. maybe that is an earlier version. I solved this problem by retrofitting larger 55mm tires onto the existing hubs. RvE
Yes, I hotwired my own from a packing foam i got with a larger plane, then sheeted with balsa, then sealed with watered down epoxy, then painted, i made the attaching device identical to the hobbyzone cub, the whole float setup: about $40.00
However, the airplane now handles terribly and i really hate it, it is hanging in my bedroom, there are better ways of doing this, make it light though! that is your best bet!!!
Great plane, has survived 3 rough landings (crashes) and has been easy to repair so far - Prop keeps falling off mid-flight(lost nose cone on first flight). Here comes the question: Does anyone think a lock nut will keep the prop on?
Does anyone have a link to a manual for the ESC that comes with this so that I can program it up via TX? I'm not sure how to program it as I don't know what each bit of music is :(
Just setting up my cub now with the Turnigy 9x TX that I purchased at the same time but I have a problem. The ESC doesn't seem to have a RX power out like my others have had. How do I connect the RX to receive power from the ESC?
JustinJ well done. It is a shame you cannot reward your self. I is a bit confusing Those ESC with built bec. Good on you for asking. It take a big man to ask. THUMBS UP to YOU
It will take off and land on grass, but more than Lilly you are going to break part of the landing gear. The braces between the wheels are weak and they break if grass is not cut short. It will also break if you have a less than perfect landing. The main gear stays intact so I would suggest just ntputtingnthe braces on between the wheels
In English
Hi I'm putting together my HobbyKing J3 Cub and met with the drawback that the throttle is invested in my radio. I understand that is accelerated with the lever forward (in fact works well in the simulator) but when I plug everything in my radio (a Futaba T6EX) is reversed, I can be doing wrong???
need to replace the motor, happy with the power from standard but unsure what motor will match this (or better) that is in stock and can get spare shafts for. any ideas?
there are many motors here that can be use with or without modify , start by looking for towerpro out runners. The motor mount on this is a bit wider then others.so what ever motor you get, you must match the the whole ,lengh is ok, towerpro2401 is where you start .If you want exact motor, you got contact the manufecturer ,thie is in your instruction and google it,you,ll find them
Can someone please confirm (As I'm getting stuffed around by HK) that this model DOES come with servo's, motor and ESC and the only thing I need is TX/RX? HK have advised me "item 2HK8Y-PNP will not include servos, ESC & motors which you can see from the pictures in our product page, if the part is required included in it will show " (included)""
That's what I thought but HK support are refusing to listen. They sent me the Blue Kit instead of the Yellow PNP, and they've advised me that I have to send mine back but the PNP one DOESN'T come with the servo's and motor. Anyone else had a problem like this?
Justin , thats very easy to get , the motor is 2409-18 it,s a 1200kv , the servos you can get them here too look for 9grams servos you got lots of choices.Same time get the battry too ita turnigy 1000ma 20c 3S . Good luck .i got mine yellow i wish i had the blue one you have.LOL
The prop is 8.5x9, here is the product number for the replacement prop: 16712
you just change the last numbers on the link for this ``16712``and click enter =D
Please thank me for the answer =D
Yes but just make sure it will fit and make sure you are buying a 3s battery. i assume it will give you bout another 3-5 minutes of flying (Battery compartment size: 70x40x32mm)
You have to make sure that the batery fits the compartment, if you was using a 1200, using a 1600 will give you plus 3-5 min, i think that you wil be able to fly during 10 min if not using much power
Can anyone help me to find the right battery for HobbyKing J3 Cub compatible with HK-T6A receiver? I ordered a wrong ZIPPY Flightmax 1000mAh 3S1P 25C SKU# Z10003S25C that comes with 4 pins Balance Plug (JST-XH) once the HK-T6A receiver has only 3 pins....
maiden my Cub today, well it really flies as good as it looks, set up is very powerfull, takes off at half throtle, performs really nice, it's a floater, everyone at the field liked this bird and were amazed by it's level of detail.
only one warning, watch out for the main gear wheels, rims are screwed to the wire, therefore when it rolls on the ground, left wheel uncrews.

Plane is ready for maiden flight now. Motor is a bit raw in sound. Sounds like unbalance. I did balanse the prop and also checked the motor mounting. I used a bit of clue, because the motor had a bit of space.
The way the prop is added is strange. Better would be prop-nut for 3mm shaft. An alternative motor for this is very hard to find IMO, because of the narrow front and it needs a long shaft.
I will fly it with 2s Rhino 1050 30C pack. It is fully forward and the ESC is above it. CG is just right this way.
Manual does not mention trow or does explain the use of the ESC. It is HK A-ZTW20A. Servos are PZ-15178 which are very good I must say.
How it flies..I will tell later. 4stars because of the weird prop-nut construction. Great looking little scale plane :D
