What means 4-40 , dimensions ?

4-40 is thread size or thread rod Diameter 2.42mm (0.095")

The 4 means it is the fourth in a screw table starting at "0" with a diameter of 0.060". There are 2x56, 3x32, 4x48, 6x32, 8x32 and so on. The 40 means 40 threads per inch. As you can see no mention to screw diameter itself. To know it use the formula: Diameter = First number * 0.013" 0.060". Thus for 4x40 the diameter will be: 4 X 0.013" 0.060" = 0.112".
