The Tiger Moth can be best described as Iconic, it was developed from the very succesful Gipsy Moth and designed by Geoffrey De Havilland in the 1930s to meet Air Ministry specifications for a new preliminary Trainer for the RAF. It'll be a tight squeeze. This model is designed for EP. Do a search for this product number: S21A - it might just have enough grunt to fly this plane nice and scale.
Well I would not. Every model that I have put a glow motor in (that was made for EP {Electric Power}) the model has never lasted due to fuel oil soaking. All glow engines put out a lot of waste oil. There are models, in Hobby King made for BOTH but mostly EP only models cannot or should be glow fitted. SORRY
Howdy I've just bought this model I've been flying glow models for ten or more years and also am a full size pilot but I've got no idea when it comes to electric power I'm hoping Somone out there could advise me what motor battery and ESC to buy for this plane

Well Hobby King did not answer you question. It is covered with heat shrink film. It is very hard to paint (weight or not). Being so smooth paint peels off. What colour did you wish?
i did do my review a bit early ,,But the main problem exists in the way this Aircraft was shown to assemble the wings using the Black metal clip,that slips in to the wing slots, I had to replace this part ,,I had to Make Fiber glass clip that ,needed to be 3 times linger to go through the wing ,and glue to either side of wing ,seen to go through rather than sit in a small Slit in the Balsa wing.
i see it as a choice in either using the bits in the kit or making better bits from Fiber glass or other stronger materials, that will flex if needed rather than loosen or break due to under size or type glue and all out strength in the Joints . Wing slots And the essential strength in them will be your Choice ,,I Evan added a carbon fiber Rod in wing for strength ,while i had the coverage lifted add stripe areas for orientation gain across wing .red stripe or something to make it easier to see at long distances ,as i do always use duel Chanel Corona receiver with fly sky or turnigy 6 or 9 ch ,
does ,Any 1 Know that this Aircraft is alot More Than a 3 hour Job ,3 day,s in between Gluing Wings ,And Re structuring Wing Load ,With A Carbon Rod inserted in the Top And Bottom Wing set. The thought Is to Create A Better wing Load ,,and 3 d Reliable aircraft...although it can be ok at Moderate 3D ,,I want stronger , After snapping a few i find its Care And daily Tail test,s of Strength due prior on every Flight . as A fracture Will Only cause Fail .
BrianB192 I am sorry to ask BUT where do you get # hour build from??? Maybe HK removed it. But 3 hour is time with hands on. It does not take in count for wait time of coffee time. We all know 3hours means 6 hours hands on. And days from box to fly. SORRY
BrianB192, I read all your comments and am particularly interested in knowing why you think the wings need stronger joiners (if I understand correctly). If there's an assembly manual available online it would sure help understand the wing issue. I would be relying mostly on the strength of the wire rigging to support the loading of the wings, exactly as the full-scale Moth does. Are you saying the rigging isn't good enough to provide sufficient load bearing support? As stated earlier, it's not a 3D aircraft, it's 'vintage scale' and should be flown in an appropriate manner. I love this model and the price is amazing. Maybe I will buy!
guys, would a hk donkey st4010 820kv motor on a 3s w/ 12x7 prop be sufficient for this plane? i need something to put it on. so far it has been used for a wind tunnel and a propeller powered skateboard, both with... "interesting" results. (the skateboard ran away when i fell off and dropped my tx, sending it careening in the direction of a group of cyclists coming the other way). anyway, if someone could let me know if that motor will work it would be great.
I think it would be fine with up to 1850 grams of thrust pulling an aprox 1800 gram plane. To me it's got much more than you need for this. A tiger moth isn't exactly a speed plane but it never hurts to have a bit of power to spare.
Ouch, lol. That's going to do some dammage. About the only prob I can see you having with that motor is they are fairly short so you may need to use some sort of stand offs. It's a pitty none of the pics show it with the cowl off so we can see the engine mount. All we can go on is the length of the motors in the combo deal. I'll know more when mine gets here and try to remember to add an update about it. Thanks for the credit too.
Fellas I needed to add a total of 135 grams ,being the weight of the Whole front Fiber glass cover ,as i have the Lead attached inside ,with Velcro,and Heat Glue, but the battery size i needed to Make max with the 300g. any Larger you will find it not fit in to the Area under the Cover ,with the size of the Whole ,i Use A Zippy 5s 22oo 40c and motor 35 48with 55 amp and the trusty 11x5.5 prop so Total weight added is battery 300g and 135g Led weight in front with CG at 5.5 to 6cmon to wing front leading edge top Wing ,Set the Moment . and wind rod and fiber Glass wing attachment lug fingers upgraded.i did a video,yes.and if you want a close View i will soon do that to show the Needed parts change in build.

Very tempting indeed! I do wish they had the yellow scheme though as well. True Tiger moth colors. I was actually thinking about using this one as a scale competitor!
I ordered the 35-42 NTM motor in the combo deal for it. Specs say "Max Power: 450W * 12v (3S) / 700W * 15v (4S) " There's no actual prop data for it but I'm thinking 11x6, maybe 12x6 on 3S. If it turns out it needs more power than that I'll just change to 4S batteries and probably a bit smaller prop. I realy can't see this needing more than about 350-400 watts to fly well and at about scale speed. Don't trust my judgement though, this is my first slow scale plane and I'm just estimating from my other experience and what I've seen from other peoples Tiger Moths.
By the way if you do a google images search on it's G-AJHS serial number you'll find it is a real Tiger Moth they've coppied so this is a scale version of it. The full size version and this both look fantastic to me.
its Apparently Quite To Scale ,And will Be easily overpowered ,as we discussed this point ,with Motor Size ,. as after a few Years Of Building HK,s Planes you Find Some Quite Light ,and Some Quite Heavy out of the Box And flying .But With The Moth ,It strikes efficiency with its possible Motor and Battery sizes and Light weight ,As Light But strong .Not Like The Pitts python as I did fly yesterday .Its Heavy 22volt set. With Large Motor .Virtually Twice as Heavy For the similar wing size 45.9dm2 / 712sq.in weight 1.868kg (4.1lbs).
But the Moth is quite Light Compared with 45dm2 weighing 1700g~1800g ..
I say try them Both.
I've uploaded a pic of the full sized plane this is based on in the files section for anyone that's interested. About the only thing I can see that would realy finish this off for scale would be to paint the landing gear the same blue and the little DH hub cap sort of thingys on the wheels.
One thing I'm probably not going to try and copy on mine, mostly because of difuculties with ballance and maintaining prop eficiency is painting the prop white with blue tips as the full sized version seems to have. I may paint one and sometimes purely for display purposes put it on.
Would be terrific with 3542 1000 KV SK3 brushless, 12 * 6 prop, 60 amps ESC and 3300 3 S Lipo for looong flights. I use this setup on a 1600 grams Phoenix Rainbow, 600 Watts * 54 amps and 2200 grams thrust...
Evan Better with 35 48, is better ,i hate the need to adding lead to Get CG. i rather use Motor weight. this can Take 5s..instead of 4s . 34 42 can only go to 4s .
well Mine Is on its Way to Australia Costing Only $180,00 in toatal im Realy Glad motor size is good at 35-42 or what id use is 35-48 being all in 14.8 volt setup with a nice 55 amp ESC using a good 11x5.5 , great selection of Quality parts Make this What I have waited for A longtime .But will It Fit a 22.2volt set up using Turnigy L4255 with 80 amp ! What will bet he Best set up Hear !!
Ahhhhhh! I couldn't hold back any longer, the bills will just have to wait (again). I've got one coming too . I'm staying with the 35-42 motor, I think it's probably overkill for a Tigermoth with a flying weight of 1700 - 1800 grams. I can always go bigger later if I'm wrong but if I want to fly it at scale speeds a good old Tigermoth doesn't exactly move very fast.
But as we know, she will probably end up around 2.0 kilograms since HK has a habit of exagerating the flying weight a bit. I think that a 6 cell would ruin this plane. It's designed to be light and floaty, not a flying brick! Sure, she would have enough power, but it's all about slow with this one!
I wouldn't do that. If you watch the video on Hobbyking daily, Scott says this one is PURELY for EP. If you're hell bent on going glow then make SURE to rienforce or replace the motor mount.
that's right Torque roll This IS 3mm ply As Many are THE ,os 4o engine is, Quite Heavy ,and i Garentee it will fall out either way,you Might as well reinforce The Whole Aircraft Cockpit as soon as you go over weight ,,it will break the Bottom and firewall out. I have Many that Have Landed Hard ,And Had to replace the whole Undercarriage ,, every Plane ends up with this Update and Tail rebuild .Elevator Push pull system I use in Many of My Aircraft ,its alot Better and Easy to Change . i did this to both my Money shot,s and,Sbach ,
I mine got hear yesterday ,and i did the cheapest freight now being 6 days or so toatal ,, although many orders Are taking a Month or more its Worth the weight .And I found it as i seen Good Quality , I will defiantly add a Rod in each wing to strengthen for More G Force .as I have a tendency to want Fast acrobatic,s with A moth of this Look and feel , As it will do almost anything in My Hands .now i can see what Ive Got .i like it yes .
It's the same. Just like the HK Nemisis 1560mm and the CMP NS-50, HK hawk and CMP hawk, and CMP C-160 and HK C-160. HK usually has it cheaper than NP though.

The price would not be much Different ,possibl a few dollars ,so if you want 1 ,,just go international mate ,,its only $18o, UA ,with is About the right price any way for its Quality.and Size .

mine is Near complete now .after all the additional parts and Modifying . i just wait for Gluye to dry Another day ,due to the modifications needed to the wings and now im looking to use a 4mm ply bottom, running along bottom of cockpit. as i have Had to do this to 1ooomm Money shot ,and 42 inch pitts.after hard Landings ,during the training over 3 years,but i use it as a every day reliable and now is strong pitts 42inch.and sbach .With this same Motor 35 48 under 5o or 55 amp .with Ply addition

Brian ....more than 10 years of flying experience...make me able to eventually fly it....I have 4 Tiger moth from 55 to more than 2 m wingspan gas and electric and will buy the new that will come from Hangar 9 ( I'm a fan of Tiger moth ). Any way price is a bit high for this model ...That's only my opinion ... :) www.link
I think this is great value for the size and quality (I have bought one) but comparing this 1250mm one to a 2200mm one is kinda apples and oranges. A 2200mm Tiger moth would be very impressive though :-). Ohh nooooo, now you've got me wanting a bigger one.
Are you guys kidding me?!?! This thing is cheap as chips as Scott would say! **********s charges you $250 for this one, and I'm sure Hanger 9 will charge you a lot more! The only thing I don't like is the color scheme. Please get it in the all yellow scheme (I think it's RAF) Hobbyking!
Ok i will probably buy in the future....Hobbyking has done lot of improvements on models and distribution of other manufactory ( DURAFLY )....Yes of course no question to compare this model with the H9 o EF versions...( You pay what you get....Most of the times ! ). In my opinion this model will be a top buy with 20 bucks less :)

today I received My Moth,after waiting under 8 days from Ordering ,from International ware house ,to Australia.amazing speed considering im still waiting for Some orders taken 4 weeks or more and still waiting .But This Has Bean Very Fast ,And The Quality is Far exceeding my expectations. This Is Far worth More than we Have payed. Now Standards Have Risen in this area i want More ,and Lookforward to The Next As Addictive as they Are we Can Not ask For Better in this Build ,, and Foe its size i will defiantly use 35 48 ,with 5o amp esc .11x5 prop as standard In this size ,its Very Light and Realy well Made ,,But i will be defanatly reinforcing the Fire wall with Home Made glass fiber sheet ,as i do with all My Models. Now I have started assembly and found The Tail Very good,And The Elevator Cables Are amazing idear .Along with the Whole Quality Build well diagrammed instructions .>>A1<< Thanks to the King Again .

Did anyone else find it was not supplied with enough 2mm rigging couplers?
It needs a total of 12 (Two for Elevatoe servo, 2 to act as spacers for the Rudder cable and 8 for the Flying Wires) but was only supplied with 10. The instructions only indicate two are needed for the steps on page 4, when actually you need 4, so I think that's the problem.

What a cute little model. However.. don't trust the cable tubes used to fasten the cables. You'll need to solder them or they'll let go. Very trickey to hook up the cables anyway. cant fit the thru fuselage cable guides they wont fit.
You'll need a 35X48 motor althought I haven't finished the build yet. the clevises supplied small ones are almost useless so to get some others.
Can't wait to fly !! maybe more later.
Beautiful model. I had to do some minor mods like reinforcing the structure where the landing gear goes screwed, especially the frontal part. It was need so much weight to balance that I decided to use a 5000mA 4s lipo placed under the motor structure at a very unconfortable to change location. I'm thinking about splitting the cowling in two parts to easy the battery access. The recommended motor is too short, I had to use a Turnigy C3548-900 to get my 12x8 propeller at the right position. The heavier motor also helped to get it balanced. The best fit spinner was the 45mm (HK B45spinner-2). As I'm always disassembling the wings to carry it, I replaced the nylon clevis for steel ones, they are stronger and easier to set the wing wires in place.
