This is just soo frustrating.I'm trying to help a friend.I built his heli which came with one of these motors and i have no clue.So far i have done timing 5/pwm 12,timing 10/pwm 16,timing 5/pwm 8.It will coutout for a few seconds and come back to life before crashing.
gurumods  6 points - 3/18/2013

What would be a good timing and freq for this motor.I'm running a trex 500 12t pinion and talon 90 esc.I have read everyone's input and tried 5 different settings. You guys are all over the board here.I wish the ones that dont know **** would just stfu. The heli cuts out in mid flight after 1 minute.Motor is cool as a cucumber.Any INTELLIGENT would be greatly appreciated. Please help.
 Liftforward 14 points
I would reset the ESC to default and try again. Also make sure you are using a 6S battery that is fully charged and balanced. I would not mess with any setting and see how it turns out. Hope this helps.
Egg Man  26 points - 2/10/2013

Screw holes on this motor easily strip, I recommend installing threaded posts and mounting it with nylock nuts. I used a pair of headless alloy steel screws and red locktite. I put temporary nuts on the front to tighten the threads and hold the screws straight while it set up.
Egg Man  26 points - 2/10/2013

Top bearing is id. 5mm od. 11mm width 5mm. Bottom bearing(s) are id. 5mm od. 8mm width 2.5mm. There are 2 of these bearings stacked in a 5mm deep hole on the bottom of the stator. There is no locktite on these bearings and they can easily be removed with a Trex 500 feathering shaft. Insert the 5mm step into the bearing and gently rock it out of the hole, repeat for the second bearing. Then insert the feathering shaft into the bottom of the stator and put the step into the top bearing. Give the feathering shaft a light rap with a mallet or whatever and the top bearing will pop out.

can I use this motor for plane?? I am thinking the join future flight design competetion so is it appropriate what do you think?
 carlos 19 points
this motor is especial for helis, and you can use on a plane
 koray 2 points
what is the difference do you know that? especial for heli or plane?
 ZZ2Tamaties 17 points
This Motor on a plane will be hard, as it will be on the rong side of the firewall of the plane. On heli this type of motor is mounded upright, Rather op for a plane motor like the : Turnigy G60 Brushless Outrunner 500kv
 Viper2097 190 points
This is a normal outrunner, you can use it on a heli or on a plane as you like. No problem. It just have been sepcially designed for a 500 Heli.

Hi, I want to rewind the Motor. did anybody have the information of the windingtype, the number of windings and the rpmś* according to this set up?? Or did anybody rewind this motor already?
 magnusEl 1214 points
Knife Liddle has done a rewind on rcgroups. Since it is a 9 toothe 6 magnet motor (It is NOT a 14 pole motor as stated in the spec...) it is using ABCABCABC as windingtype. He did meassure Kv to be 1650, and the original winding has 6 turns, and uses 11 strands of #26 wire.

 druckgott 8 points
Hi I also rewind it now with 9 turns and 1.12mm wire. I get 20000 U/min with a 7x7 Prop and around 55A on 6S.
 druckgott 8 points
Another Question is there a motor which is rewindable (so no glue) and it has 14 Poles? Because I by this due to the descritption with 14 Poles but only has 6. It should have nearly the same size.
 magnusEl 1214 points
Thanks for the credit! Regarding rewindable motors, I have proposed to HK:s Director that they should put up motor kits for sale, since more and more people is rewinding motors. Preferable the SK3 Competition Series, witch seems to be a realy good motor. Maybe time to start a thread in the HK forum..

I've uploaded the photos of the inside of this motor and I'm just wondering: how many poles is this and what timing and PWM are best for this motor? Any one can assist?
 nese189 15 points
I think the photo takes a while to upload... if not I'll try again tomorrow.
 Prego 52 points
Dude... about the timing I answered bellow... about the PWM, you can keep 8. Hope I could helped you...
 nese189 15 points
The timing for the replies and posts seem to be off-sync, just like the posting of the pic - strange. But thanks for the input, this still means that I'm running this motor a little hot with the ESC.
 StevenC 557 points
You need to use this formula to determine the best PWM. PWM = (Voltage x Poles x KV)/20 For this motor: 22.2V x 6 poles x 1600KV / 20 = 10Khz So select 10Khz if your ESC supports it, otherwise use 8KHz
 nese189 15 points
Thanks StevenC for your note. The thing is I'm not sure if the number of poles here corresponds to the 6 pairs of magnets in the can or the 9 coiled segments on the stator. Using the formula would yield PWM values of 10khz or 16khz respectively. On top of that the number of poles according to the specs on this webpage says 14 poles (????) What should it be?
 StevenC 557 points
It's the magnet poles that you need to know to calculate the PWM

Cheers. I'll go try it this weekend and see if the temperature runs cooler than the 60degC that I'm getting now
nese189  15 points - 11/6/2012

Hi Guys. I've got one of these and got it on my trex 500 clone on a 13T pinion that came stock with the heli. The motor runs smooth for my 6-7 minute 2000-2200 rpm leisurely flight with the YEP 80A ESC (stock settings) here from hobby king but the motor runs almost hot to the touch. I can only keep my finger on it for about a second or two max. ESC is only warm, under 40 deg C. Would I need to adjust the ESC timings to get it to run cooler or is this just the temperature it runs at?
 Prego 52 points
Hi! Are you using 6S batteries? What is the timming that you have in your ESC?
BEST ANSWER CREDIT AWARDED
 nese189 15 points
Thanks for asking. I'm using 6S and reading from the card the timing is 18 degrees. I'm not sure, however the timing of the motor or the PWM. Now that it's mentioned, how are timing and PWM related?
 Prego 52 points
Hi! no problem... Well, as the motor is considered as high RPM (even being just 1600KV) you could keep the timing as normal, I think that it would be 15º*.
Boaterguy  68 points - 7/29/2012

4249? That's bigget than the turnigy t600 (4030) which is for a 600 size heli, what am I missing?
 StevenC 557 points
I've got the smaller SK3 2839 for 450 helis, I have to say it is quite big compared with previous motors I used in my 450. The larger size probably explains its good performance!
 magnusEl 1214 points
This one is named after can size, but the T600 (4030) is the stator size. Can size for the T600 is 49x57 and it weighs 140 grams more.
Manrico  1 points - 5/12/2012

Do it meets the 9171000022 - Turnigy Talon V2 Carbon Fiber Quadcopter? Or what´*s the better motor for it, considering performance and camera gimble and fpv?
Manrico  1 points - 5/12/2012

What means heli 500, is it size?
 mrfourtysevenman 128 points
it means it takes around 500 watts to fly. the motor/batter/speed controller should evenly add up to 500 watts. this is for a rather large helicopter.
 Viper2097 190 points
Sorry, this is FALSE!
500 size heli just means that it is the standard size of motors for a 500 Helicopter (e.g. T-Rex 500, HK500...)
It has nothing to do with the power, power is written with 1.6kW...
 anton 1 points
Wrong 500 size means the blade size not the motor or heli size
 Overfill 143 points
OMG, 500SIZE means like Viper2097 said. Its a standard 500 size HELICOPTER engine. Not watt or blade size. So if you buy this you easy know it will fit your Hk500/trex500.
beenfly'n  463 points - 4/29/2012

Why 3.5mm bullet connectors? Align uses 4mm on all of their 500 size motors.
 RC_HADY 228 points
3,5mm bullet connectors is googd to 80A or change and use 4mm :-)
HobbyKing connector is good quality..
 sp00fman 208 points
Because HK does not sell any align parts or kits. What makes Align the standard? All my ESC's have 3,5mm bullets so i am happy with it. I ordered this motor for my Gaui 425. I shall post a review later on.
 beenfly'n 463 points
Let's see, sp00fman's standard or Align's standard. Hmmm, hard to decide... www.link
 Viper2097 190 points
I would not use 3.5mm Bullet Connectors on a 1600 Watt Motor...
I changed them to 4mm gold. Also the wires are not equivalent to the "high quality" for this motor as HK is saying. The wires are very hard and small, also the shrinking tube around is just a joke... This Motor is superb, but HK, for a "high end" Motor you could have done the wiring thing better...
 Egg Man 26 points
Wires like this are the windings brought out of the motor and braided together. Nothing bad about this, it's pretty common with brushless motors and makes for slightly lower resistance.
elPiotr  12 points - 4/26/2012

1600kv seem too much for protos ...
 RC_HADY 228 points
kV is good for 500 heli :-)
 SMPRC 103 points
So don't use it in a Protos (500). OK on 3S (11.1V) it would function but the amps, *whoa*! *-)
 SMPRC 103 points
Sorry, your comment is because the motor description says it's suitable for the Protos. On the recommended 6S there's no gearing combinations for the Protos that will function correctly, unless you want to drop 3 cells. Maybe four would work.
 elPiotr 12 points
Thats exactly what I meant. On 6s, that is the only serious way on Protos 500, there is no pinion small enough to run with this Kv so the Protos should be taken off from the notes. By the way, scorpion 3226-900 fit perfectly with only a small modification on frame and with HK helidrive 80A. A really badass heli :-p
 __Riff 179 points
If 6s is too much you can use also 5s batteries and it wont be that fast!
jirkamrha  97 points - 4/25/2012

Can anybody specify the right timing and frequency for this motor? Thnks Jiri
 07axel 6 points
20-30 Timing 16 frequency and have fun
 Boaterguy 68 points
Higher frequencies only cause more heat, if 30 timing and 8khz is not enough, then consider raising the frequency, but even then it's not the best solution.
 Eduardo 8 points
Dear friends of hobby, which is 20-30 Timing 16 frequency, so that they serve and how to get these values? Sorry for my ignorance. www.link
garth  123 points - 4/25/2012

Why cant they ever provide a minimum Datá* ?

Poles ?
Magnets ?
 turtlehill 35 points
The specs list 14 motor poles.
 garth 123 points
Yes, but the Number of Mags is missing.
 Pani. 12 points
garth the poles are the magnets. They are used for gov rpm calculations.
 PlanBfidelity 57 points
The number of poles cant be right - no ESC can handle that. A short example: A fast ESC like the Turnigy Platinum turn a 2pole motor with max 210000rpm, a 14pole motor with 210000 : 7 = 30000rpm. But a full charged 6sLipo provides up to 25V x 1600kv = 40000rpm!
 2Doggs 186 points
The poles number is correct, and you're right about the average ESC, which will top out at around 30,000rpm for this motor. Some of the Suppo motors (of which there are Turnigy re-branded versions) also have a high pole count.
 sp00fman 208 points
Motor has arrived! Looks nice and shiny from the outside. I count 9 stator poles with rusty areas, and 6 very rusty magnets in the can, fixed with an absolute minimum amount of glue. Next to one magnet is a blue blob of what looks to be epoxy resin. Top bearing OD is 11mm, lower bearing is two tiny 9mm OD bearings stacked. The bearings are reasonable smooth but not prefect notch free. The wires are made from an estimated 10 strands turned together. Stiff motor leads. Even the box is wrong on the pole count. How silly is that? GJ HK! I hope it runs well enough to at least get my $30 out of it but 'm getting skeptical.
 deanross 56 points
How has it ran for you spoof man ? Recommend it ?
 sp00fman 208 points
I would say YES carefully at the moment. It runs smooth after re-balancing the bell. It seems efficient and runs cool. Gaui hurricane 425, 430mmm blades, 2100gr, 6s2800mah, 5 minutes sports flying at 2700rpm, 80% gov with 16/60/19/61 gearing. Will have to do further tests to see how it holds under aggressive moves, but will upgrade to flybarless control first. will report back later.
 deanross 56 points
thanks for the reply,,Will give it a go for my 500e
 john 20 points
what prop would it pull?
 sp00fman 208 points
One with 425mm blades and variable pitch.

Motor failed on 6s in a boat within 5min of run time, Looked like it had a short and caused the wiring to melt and nearly set fire to my boat, packaged nicely, looks and feels good and visually looks good quality.

I've recieved this motor via a friend who are willingly order this item form Hobbyking, I got it fitted to my Trex/Hk500, running on Turnigy ESC 85Amps, throttle curve 50pcnt Normal, 75pcnt Idle 1 and 79pcnt Idle 2. The power is consistence through out even with sudden pitch change, there are no sign of motor bogged. This motor is very powerful.. try it..to know it..

This motor looks great but if You open it there is one BIG problem - main stator is not made with the core as one piece like in allmost all outrunners but from two pcs - iron stator with wiring and middle core from AL secured together just with thinny cotter ring which in my case was not connected - I found it between magnets and stator poles causing motor turning allmost impossible. If this happens during flight 100pcnt disaster to all Your machine is guaranteed. I glued these two parts together with epoxy and going to try this motor. Anyway I´ve lost allmost all my confidence to this motor.
