Hobbyking Sbach 342 Gas 50cc 2210mm (ARF) (USA Warehouse)

This stunning looking Sbach 342 is a pure, mean, 3D machine! The superb Ultra-light construction, which features a sheeted spine fuselage for strength, keeps the flying weight minimal, couple this with a 50cc gas engine or Turnigy Rotomax 50cc equivalent brushless motor and you have unlimited vertical performance!

The wings and horizontal stabilizers are plug in for easy transport, the tailfeathers are not flat sheet but full aerofoil, the control surfaces are easily large enough for 3D maneouvers. Rudder is pull/pull and high quality ball linked control rods are used throughout for precision and reliability. The pre-applied covering is glossy and of a very high standard, the colour scheme is ideal for orientation and looks superb in the classic Sbach scheme. This is a high quality 3D model that is also an ideal everyday sport flyer when set up on low rates, either way, its a real performer and a real looker!

I have a moki210 glow engine, Do you think it will work on this plane?
ericetadja  108 points - 5/13/2013

Nice build. The covering is well applied. The wing tube fits in the fuselage, maybee this problem has been fixed (or i'm lucky). The harware is medium quality. I thing i'll change the control rods and hinges. Landing gear seems "soft" but i have the carbon one from my former sbach (kissed a tree) 2 crows is for the canopy. It arrived with 2 cracks on his left side. There is dust everywhere under the black paint and the varnish has been very badly applied. The canopy is not clear at all and his whole surface is like orange skin. Beurk. Is there a control before delivery???? So overall, the kit is ok except for the canopy who should not have been sent. I'll have to spend tme trying to fix it.

Where can I get carbon fiber upgrades for this plane? I've found the CF tube for the horizontal stab on HK's site (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewIte
m.asp?idProduct=9784),
but I can't find the main wing tube (25mm x 800mm), or the landing gear anywhere.

FYI, this plane is tail heavy and if you go to carbon fibre you will need more nose weight. On mine I have a canister with the DLE-55 with a 2200 3S LiPo and a 2200 2S LiPo on Ignition. I came in hard on soft ground and ripped the gear out and crunched the cowl and wheel pants. I repaired everything good as new again and went to carbon upgrade to save a little weight since I added some with the cowling.
Now I bought the HK 15298 HV servo's and will need to rebalance.
Follow my build and maintanance thread on FlyingGiants we have a great many with this plane and some with the Pilot-RC 342.

I can't decide which motor to use on this. I'm going to go with either a 53CC XYZ Twin Cylinder, or a 56CC DLA. I would really like the sound lower vibration from the Twin, but I'll also be doing a lot of hardcore 3D flying, and would like the extra power from the 56CC. Thoughts?
 James 5 points
correction: ... really like the sound AND lower vibration ...
 Srthauler 9 points
James not sure if you decided on power yet i did mine with a dle55 anyway there is another site selling a combo with a 70cc twin. I saw it after i ordered mine with carbon fiber upgrade but i may purchase this one to as a spare.
 James 5 points
Any hints on what that other site is?

The XYZ 53cc doesn't have the power as a DLE-55 Even with a Frank Bowman ring and reed valve upgrade it still lacks the power.
 Angrymoose 9 points
DLE makes a flat twin 60cc now as well that im sure would rock some socks as well.
 jahatton 34 points
Weighs more and has the same power.
 Angrymoose 9 points
Ah thats a bit of a downer I guess then, maybe smoother and different sound though?? Ive not seen one running yet.

Hi can someone tell me which plane is mor bang for my buck a sbach 342 50cc or an sbach 342 30cc, how much wind can this plane handle?
 Srthauler 9 points
Probably more than you and I are willing to fly in lol. They were flying these types in up to 40mph winds at XFC last year if thats any indication.
 jahatton 34 points
50cc is easier to work on and distribute the radio gear. I'm finished day 3 of assembling my 50 SBach. You will need to modify the engine box. I had to cut 1 7/8th off to fit the Turnigy HP50. It was easy!

Anyone know if this is a HK brand or is it some known brand with the box turned inside out as some other planes?
 Jeff 6 points
Under the canopy looks strikingly similar to my Pilot-RC 25% 30cc SBach. The hardware package looks similar also... coincidence?
HookedOnRC  18 points - 4/10/2012

Anyone know who makes this SBach? Is the Landing gear carbon? Are the wing and stab tubes carbon?
 F100CUFFLINK 886 points
all i can tell you is the wing tube is black and so is the gear, my guess that the gear are so is the wing tube, but i have see where the wing tube is black but not carbon,i have bought tubs that are black but they are aluminum, the gear could be fiberglass filled wich is fine .
 F100CUFFLINK 886 points
if you look hard you can see the tub in the fuse .
 jahatton 34 points
The wing tube is 6061 aluminum, the inner wing tube is carbon, the tube front and back of fuselage is carbonfibre.
Srthauler  9 points - 4/6/2012

Would this plane use a side carb or rear mounted carb, i was thinking of using the DLE55 rear mount. Being my first gas im unsure.
 bigwes 13 points
rear carb will clear cowl a lot better
 BoomaO 11 points
DLE55 would be ideal for this plane
 Srthauler 9 points
Thanks guys I purchased a carbon fiber version with the dle55, I will say its a beautiful plane in person and cant wait to fly it, should be about a week.

I bought this ARF to replace my Pilot RC 50cc SBach that i had to sell. I was impressed with the pictures and it looked very similar in construction. I decided to save a couple hundred dollars and went with this Hobby King version. When I recieved it, I was convinced it was the same airplane. The quality is as good as any ARF I have built in my over 20 years experience. The hardest part on the build is getting the firewall angles setup correctly. Covering is top notch. It is very light for its size also. I did have to add a considerable amount of weight to the top of the firewall to balance with the DLE55, so it will take a heavy engine no problem without balance issues. Make sure to put a incidence meter on the stabs when bolting them on to make sure they are at 0 degrese to the wings. There is wiggle room and they will be off enough to cause trimming problems. My initial flight went problem free. This plane must have been built with helium infused wood. It flies soooo light. Knife edge flight is almost hands off. I was particular in wanting the proper red ultimate spinner, and after paying 80 dollars off of ebay for the only one I could find, it bridged the gap price wise to the Pilot, but it is still a good bit cheaper still, and you would not know the difference if you had them side by side. I highley recomend this plane to anyone looking for a 50cc unlimited/3D aerobat.

I would have to say that I was amazed at how great this kit look upon receipt! The control surfaces are not hinged, though slotted and hinges inserted (except for rudder -typical). The landing gear is aluminum. The wing & stag fuselage tubes are CF but the tubes themselves are aluminum. For the price - it's a STEAL! I love that you have to assembly the firewall because I am going to go with a ZDZ60RV and its casing forces you to push the firewall back or put the carb inside the fuse. I'm going with Power HD 9150 servos on control surfaces except rudder. Its going to have a Hitec 7954 for rudder. Going to run 2 LiFe packs for receiver. Going to stat building it right after Xmas - I hope! I'll re-post after test flight.

This is NOT the perfect kit like you would imagine... I had an original pilot-RC 50cc Sbach before this one and this hobbyking version seems like it's the old-version pilot-rc kits. There will be many bad & missing parts like. For example, they give you 4 X 80mm pushrods that is unusable because you need 2x 45mm and 2x 160mm. Missing many m3 screws and nuts etc'... Hobbyking didn't respond to my request for the missing/replacement parts. Also, you'll need to work really hard to make this kit fly. For example, both wing and elevator aluminum tube did not fit the holes. I literally spent 10 hours scrubbing the holes to fit the tube. It was very frustrating. Shipping was about $130 to Los Angeles... What a ripoff. I advice is get the real thing directly from the manufacture. Not through HK.
