The De Havilland DH-88 Comet was designed to win the 1934 MacRobertson Air Race from England to Melbourne in Australia, the beautifully sleek Comet not only won this event but went on to set several records. Several Comets were built for the race but the striking scarlet "Grosvenor House" comet won comfortably in a time of 70 hours and 55 minutes. It would be fair to say that the DH-88 is probably the most stylish of the Golden Era racers, bearing in mind that most airforces were still flying bi-plane fighters at this time, the Comet, with it's ultra sleek lines and 255mph top speed was a glimpse of the future in the early 1930's, the construction techniques devloped for the DH-88 were later used on De Havillands most famous son.....the amazing Mosquito!
The Durafly DH-88 Comet is a faithful scale reproduction of this most elegant of race planes, it is constructed from tough EPO foam and is nicely painted in a deep scarlet, the final touch is courtesy of the pre-applied white waterslide decals, which help make this model really stand out both in the air and on the ground. The wing is removable for easy transportation and the huge canopy allows for easy & fast access to the Lipoly battery. The scale detail is typical Durafly quality and includes scale exhaust stubs, superbly molded cowls, purpose made spinners and counter rotating props.
This superbly priced kit is ideal for those pilots looking to use their own power train, especially the speed freaks and also those who want a hand launch version.

Hi, i never have had a twin motors plane so I ask... Do you have to connect the two esc to the same channel with an Y wire? How do you do if a motor spins a bit faster than the other? Do you need a gyro to correct this?
Yes, you are correct. You use a single LiPo battery pack to feed both ESCs in parallel and you use a Y coupler to connect both ESC controls to the throttle channel of the receiver. Don't be tempted to use a separate battery pack for each motor/ESC because battery packs are less likely to be matched as well as identical motors. If one motor spins a bit faster than the other, you don't need to use a gyro - it can be trimmed out with rudder/aileron.
In the forum for the DH-88 Comet, one gentleman recommends and is using the AXN 2208-2150 kV with good success. On a side note, motor numbers refer to the size and output of the motor. These are helpful so you know it fits and has proper power for your model.
22=motor diameter mm 08=length mm last# is output in RPM/Volts
Hi Guys, new to this lark, looking for replacement motors, not used to the techno babble yet, anyone got reccomendations, HK no use for advise, with all the 2826, 2836 I'm lost can someone give me a good product code, nothing worse than waiting 5 or 6 weeks and it doesn't fit (German customs the Zoll, are a bitch)
For kit version HK advises for retracts needed to complete, only "Servoless Retracts 32mm x 35mm". They obviously sell retracts that would fit, but oddly do not show them in the Spare Parts listing for this plane in PNF & other finished form.
Does anyone know the _EXACT_ servoless retracts from HK's catalog that will fit & work with the DH-88, ie the Product ID #? No guessing, please - I've had quite enough of bad advice by pretenders only looking to roll up points, already.
Alan wrote: "189000015/22068 servoless retractable landing gear v2 fixed or 90 degree rotating 1pair $19.95. thats what I purchased for my comet" I bet your comet sure was surprised when you tried to put rotating retracts in it. Did it get a bit constipated??
the retracts I purchased from Hobby King for my DH88 were the above and work perfectly . they dont have 90 degree rotating but there is a fitting to twist the strut 90 degrees when retracted. The comet had its maiden flight last weekend and flys perfectly. The motors I used were Scorpion SH-2212-1850Kv Brushless and used the same props and spinners that came with the kit
To HK support ...or Anyone who knows size of the prop and spinner included max diameter of the motor? 2826 seems to be recommended, 2836 would be better, but would even 3630 fit? It will be a 4s setup if it will be this one.
Prop: 150mm. 6mm hole
Spinner: 35mm
Prop adapter: fits 3mm axle.
Stock motor: 26mm diameter. Up to 32-33mm should fit. Distance firewall to front of cowl: 30mm
and because of this "darn 1cm" it cant be shipped to Ukrane too www.link C'mon HK!!! do something with this. You have too many planes that I can't buy not because I have no money, but because you can't ship it!
HK can ship it, just our post services does not accept size bigger than 1,05m and box is 1,06m. C'mon Anthony nobody will notice and we will not tell anybody :)
Problem is that a box must be big enough so the contents aren't damaged during shipping. Many of these planes are already arriving with damaged wing tips. SO an even slightly smaller box would cause even higher damage rates.
My previous reply was removed, but main idea was that if I bought that new "flying falus" with wings which I doubt I will be capable to fly, so answer is yes, I would take a risk for this nice thing.
Well my DH-88 kit arrived, a most beautiful looking aircraft and very well made. Shame about the packaging. Mine suffered from the normal one bent wing tip and one bent and broken wingtip. NOTE TO HOBBYKING: a bit of bubblewrap around the wingtips would probably fix this. Also some small dings in the fuselage, probably from the extra stuff I had in the order –* better packing would have prevented this.
No major problem –* I should be able to straighten the wingtips by hot water at exactly the right temperature and fix the dings either by hot water or by filling and airbrushing if I can mix exactly the right shade and sheen of red, which I need to do anyway to cover the aileron servos.
The kit includes everything it says in the Hobbyking website, including double motor firewalls. The “*fixed”* u/c is in fact the gear part of the scale u/c in the PNP aircraft, though with no obvious way to attach it, and the u/c doors are included. The ANX 2208 2150 kV motors appear to fit perfectly, both in terms of width and length if I use only one of the motor firewalls (thanks to those who measured this). My light servoless retracts are exactly the right width for the plastic retract fitting if I cut a couple of grooves with a Dremel.
The airframe weighs 400gm/14.1oz with the nose weight and 335gm/11.8oz without. Adding 2x (AXN 2208 20A Red Brick ESC Prop mount prop spinner light retracts light wheels light struts) = 220gm/7.7oz
This gives a total aircraft weight of 820gm/ 30oz / 775gm/27.3oz with/without nose weight. If I add a heavy (187gm/6.7oz ) or light (163gm/5.7oz ) 2200 mAh battery this gives an AUW ranging between 938gm/33oz and 1007gm/35.5oz., the upper weight being quite close to the normal PNP weight of 1020gm/36oz, but the lower weight being 82gm/2.9oz lighter. So a lot will depend on whether I can balance it without the nose weight and with the lighter battery. The 3-axis stabilisers I ordered (14gm) are about to be shipped so I will probably build this beautiful bird next and maiden it with the stabiliser, taking off gear down and belly landing gear up.

4 Crowns so far for a beautiful, well made but badly packaged aircraft. I may raise or lower this in the future depending on how it flies (and lands).
