does anyone make a cooling collar for a 45mm diameter can motor x 60 mm long.
 ____JC 60 points
Ive bought one made of silicon and doesnt have 60mm long but does the job, in an american site.

Want to cool this motor. Use it as a boat anchor!!!
twissted  25 points - 12/4/2012

STAY a-way from any KB45 motor they over heat and have a very short life span.

How did you take apart this motor?
propnut30  13 points - 10/27/2011

ok I have the motor, whats the best way to remove the end bells to drill the cooling holes. I would hate to mess this motor up.
Skyshark  11 points - 3/29/2011

I wonder why the manufacturer does not build these with cooling holes in the front and back? It would not be that difficult to do before assembly.

I dont think they make time into perfecting this motor just pack it and get it going lol...

Will a 6cell 3700 lipo-battery run a 4.5 edf fan unit with this motor..Thanks Gord
 Shonen 69 points
it will if your lipo is 30c. This motor pulls over 100A.

I've seen a few postings on using this motor in the haoye 4" fan. I currently have a generic 101mm fan using scorpion 3026-1400 (1400kv) on 8S. It's a rocket, but I'd love to find a motor for half that cost with same performance. This motor is only 1000kv, so I'm guessing it'd need 10S?

Most Heatsinks on the market are 36mm and 44mm.
Will a 44mm heatsink fit on this supposedly 45mm motor?

Thanks
 Straight Up 743 points
Many after market heatsinks are not 360, so they can be "prized apart" to fit a slightly larger can.

A bunch of stupid questions here... I am planning to use this motor with a Turnigy Plush 100Amp ESC in a monstertruck, running from either 3S or 4S Zippy-H lipos... now, is this a large motor or a small one, how many poles does it have and so forth? If need be I can cap throttle movement so it will never reach WOT if that would fry the ESC.... I have seen the KB45-something XL at 2300kv in the same monster truck I have and it was totally insane, I don't want speed but rather torque and I figure that this motor will give me lots of torque but less speed = Me happy :)
Any answers? Should I use low or high timing advance on the Turnigy Plush with this motor?
 Shonen 69 points
it is a very large motor, it is 2mm or so larger in both dimensions than a Castle/Neu 1515 2200Kv (ie. Mamba Monster). I don't know about poles but throttle only controls the average current flow (the motor will always draw its full amp rating, the ESC just controls how long the amps go through). Don't skimp on an ESC for brushless motors, you cannot get away with running a lower current rated one. Timing should be set to low, as the KB series motors run very hot.

how do you take apart to drill holes for cooling
 Deryn 101 points
Drilling holes in the motor is not recommended. Any foreign objects inside the motor case will cause damage.

Better options for cooling would be:
1: Finned heatsink
2. Water cooling jacket
 Straight Up 743 points
Anyone know of a 45mm heat sink supplier?
 MJBENNETT9 86 points
Deryn,

I'm not sure what the holes do, or rather how a couple of little holes increase cooling?

thx.
 MarcusRjCharita 425 points
Peter, I totaly agree with you but I did not find a heatsink that fits it and water cooling is an option only for boats. Fellow Soren Hyldeqvist placed a review informing that he made holes and it worked fine. So, can anyone inform if it is possible to take off the white plates that cover top and bottom of motor shell? Thanks a lot!

Where do i get a 6mm to 4mm coupler/joint for this motor? Thanks
 Skyshark 11 points
I bught the KD36-74-09XL 1900kv Brushless Inrunner motor and drilled holes in it with out much problem. First step-get a drill press!!!! I used a jig that I made to hold the motor and a milling bit. When drilling down you can "feel" when you are just about to go through, just take your time. Then use an exacto knife to cut around the perimiter of the hole. You will end up with a little flat piece to pull out. Like I say take your time with the right equipment and it can be done very effective. Still I wish they were manufactured with cooling holes like a lot of the other motors sold on here.

31 thumbs up!
I made the mod with 4 intake holes in the front and 4 holes in the back and the temp was lowered with 20 deg. C. in a 4,5" with a good lip 10S 5000mA lipos 90A it delivers 4Kg trust for just around 50$ thats amazing....
Love it
with the extra holes its a 5 star inrunner. :-)

I did two testruns with 5`` EDF:

Regulator OEM RC 100

1, On 6S 4800 mAH pack motor takes 85 Amp which is around 1800W. The pack was not new (50 cycles), so this might be better on a new pack.

2, On 7s 2p A123 LiFepo cells (nominal same voltage as above 6s) motor takes 105 Amps, which calculates to more than 2000 watts. Motor gets pretty warm, but seems ok.

I use the motor for 4.5' EDF wiht 8s - 10s lipo. Great motor for the money. Only thing missing is ventilation holes in the front and the back, as it tends to run hot.

10 S LIpo in Hydro (Raceboat) with
42 mm Octura Prop. There is of course
a slight difference compared to a Lehner 2250 or Plettenberg 300-50. But performance is tremendous for this price. If the bearings are changed to better ones it is really "best buy"
