how many amps it draws power from the engine
 Amaury 247 points
You can expect 80-90 amps draw on a motor like this.

Could i use this motor on a 1/8 scale truggy with the HobbyKing 120A car ESC and 4S LiPo?
 Amaury 247 points
I don't recommend at all this motor on a car on 4s. Take a classic brushless 3674 or a 4074.
Michael2  158 points - 8/30/2012

I set a water cooling around the motor. Also 3 8mm bore in the front and into the back and also a watercooling at the backplate. The front plate has a big aluminium plate. And in 3 days I test that motor with a 47mm 3blade srew and a a 180A Turnigy esc. We will see?! At 10A 5S!
 Michael2 158 points
Sorry but I take KB45-08XL 1600KV 3,528KW
 Michael2 158 points
The boat is a 120cm speed boat with a very deep V-Hull amd the weight is 8kg.

Another motor is the XK4082 - 1600KV perfectly for the vanquish and the motor is still cold! The combination with a 45mm 2blade screw is really the BEST MIX at all!

How do I water cool this motor?
Chriso  12 points - 1/4/2012

hey can i use this motor on 3s or max 4s lipo on a 100 amp esc???? please answer thanks!!!!!
 Jokubonis 9 points
No. On 3s amps go to 130A (127 mm edf) So, 100 amp esc will burn
Jslasher  7 points - 1/4/2012

Which wire is which on this motor? I am hooking up to an HK 150A ESC ABC wires. Motor has red, white and black wires. HELP!
 Hobbyisity 204 points
red is positive, black is negative and white goes into the last plug! hope this helps
 Jslasher 7 points
The hobbyking 150A ESC has orange yellow and blue wires???
 Hobbyisity 204 points
are there little symbols near where the wires come out on your motor??
 Jslasher 7 points
This is sensorless correct?
 Hobbyisity 204 points
it could be with the white cable
 David 7 points
the wire order does not matter, red is not positive, black not negative. it is essentially a 3 phase motor. hook it up, if it runs backwards, reverse any 2 wires and it will run forwards.

have this KB45-8L in a 29 inch scat cat hull. octura 440 3 blade prop. use 2x3s 5000mah at 20-30c discharge in paralell for 22.2 volts. have 180 amp,max 300amp seaking esc. keeps burnin up the esc's. used 120 - 240 amp esc also. what am i doin wrong.
 Michael2 158 points
You make a short in The MOTOR!! If it is too hot the lack is burning and you have contact to other cables from induction

I got this engine to run it with a 180 amp esc turnigy with my hull genesis many say they will not hold up to 6 s for a long time tell me that you will endure 'to 6 s on the genesis thanks for the reply
helix and that I should use weights?

How do you think, Is it possible to use this motor vith Traxxas slash 2wd?(sorry for my english)
 godspeed777 1 points
if you use this motor with a traxxas slash, it will fly without wings. super powerful.
rmaerial  88 points - 7/25/2010

Hk, will this motor be a good replacement for a Genesis boat? Thanks
 herwig 1 points
I would say yes, but you must use a good watercooling and 1 of the turnigy marine 180 A ESC

Will this work with my novak hv pro ESC that I have in my losi 8ight Te? I found my hv pro 5.5t to be to slow for my truggy... If not will this motor and the hobby king 150a brushless ESC work in my losi 8ight Te 2.0 or will that be asking to much work from this setup?
 jvgjvg 107 points
the novak hv is only for sensored motors!

Would this motor stay together at 106000rpm not a joke i plan on using it in a graster doing way over 100 mph
 buffmanmarc 38 points
If you do try this i recomend at least a 1/2" thick plexiglass bullet proof wall inbetween the motor and every living creature you want unhurt.
be sure to make a video so you don't have to explain to the doctor what happened. Maybe have a fire extinguisher handy.

If it stays together for more than 5 seconds, i'll be impressed.

Hi all,
I'm getting this for a 1/8 buggy using 6s 5000maph 30c packs. What size heat sink will I need for the motor? where to by? Thanks.
Bill Wiebe  37 points - 9/3/2009

I am going to try a 6X$ prop on this thing , 80amp esc 5 cell battery. maybe I'll use 2 6x4 props.
Anyone has any idea what will happen?
Rebelgium  28 points - 6/26/2009

Most Heatsinks on the market are 36mm and 44mm.
Will a 44mm heatsink fit on this supposedly 45mm motor?

Thanks
 scarletboa 350 points
yes, a 44mm heatsink will fit this motor just fine.
 jvgjvg 107 points
how many poles has this motor??
 Micho69 277 points
2 poles
 gadelavega 2 points
I think it is a 3 pole motor: it has 3 wires and you can feel it "clogging" six times when you spin it one turn by hand.

All people is talking about this motor runs too hot, this means that will be lots of energy lose producing such temp, of course motor is powerfull but reading what people said should not be efficient, please correct me if Im wrong.
 gadelavega 2 points
Consider that this is a 3.5kW motor, even 1pcnt loss means 35W. That's a small incandescent light bulb!
dredr  59 points -

Could you please tell me the the maximal Ampere when it runs with 6s lipo. i plan to use a 100 Ampere esc would this be enough ?

with best regards
daniel
 gadelavega 2 points
The motor is rated for 3.5kW at 36V which means 95A. I wouldn't go over that.

thank you deryn for these information it will help me

can no one help me i need the technical spec. of these monter
 Deryn 101 points
What technical specs do you need that are not listed?
 dredr 59 points
how many turns ? is voltage of 22,2 v enough to run it ? how many milimeters between the mounting holes ?

thanks for your answer
 Deryn 101 points
This one is an 8 turn motor (the number before the 'L' or 'XL' is the number of turns).
6S (22.2v) will run it, and produce big power.
4S (14.8v) would even be enough to run it, and run it well - comparable to a nitro engine with equal tooth pinion/clutchbell.
The d.e.s.c.r.i.p.t.i.o.n states 36v max, but a more realistic maximum would be 26v (7S).
Not sure of the mounting hole distance, but from the picture I would guess from 28-30mm.

this motor runs best on 4s lipo and has 30mm spacing between the bolt holes. i have a couple KB motors and as long as you don't go over 40k rpm with them, they don't get hot and can pull a huge load. if the motor is too hot, but the esc is cool or warm, you are likely undergeared. in 1/8 rc trucks, gear for 40-45mph.
dredr  59 points -

how many turns has the motor ? which water cooled mount should i take for this monster ?
 Micho69 277 points
8 turns , water cooled mount water cooled jacket is needed.

17 thumbs up!
I don't really recommend this for running the 5" fans - it's too high kv. On 5 cells, at full throttle it pulls 140 amps, making your ESC, battery wires, and motor get dangerously hot. I'd suggest using the lower KV motors and more cells.

I highly doubt you get anywhere near the rated amount of watts before this thing vapourises itself from overheating - or your speed controller melts. You'd need to be running this at 35-40v to get to that many watts, however that is over 80,000RPM which is just not going to work.

Not suitable for 5" fans on 4 or more cells!

12 thumbs up!
Used this in a brushless nitro Savage conversion with a Turnigy plush 100A ESC and the power is INSANE. Smoked the slipper clutch in the first 5 minutes. After fixing that, the 14 pound savage will spin all 4 tires on asphalt or wheely or flip over on command. Very happy with this setup, total cost of these two components was the same as I sold my old nitro motor for!! I removed both end bells and added ventilation holes, and and adapter plate to the wire end that I'm using a CPU cooling fan to push cooling air through the motor. Runs at 140F at most setup this way on a Zippy 4400mah 20-30 6s setup (a 2X2 array of Zippy 2200 20-30c 3s lipos). Got gps tested 26mph out of this setup using a 12T pinion and 52T spur gear but I think the tranny is stuck in first gear.

7 thumbs up!
I tried this motor in a Kyosho 7.5 with a 5S 4400 pack and a Tekin R1 Pro controller. Gearing was 76/14 and 76/12. After my first 5 minute race, the controller and motor were over 200 degrees. After, the motor seems to have been demagnetized. The controller and motor get very hot after 1 lap. Motor might be ok if kept VERY cool, but overall I was not happy.

Great motor for car use. Put it in an OFNA GTP 1/8 scale with a mamba max and 4s lipo. Found some 6mm bore pinions. Currently geared for 50mph, car runs great. Tons of power, and the motor stays much cooler than a feigao xl. Can't beat it for the price!
