Nice I bought the 160 twin hope it runs as good. Wish they could take all these four strokes and make them gas with the same price.

Hi! I purchased this engine from hobbyking two months ago. Yesterday (April 27, 2013) I started it up the first time and it ran perfectly for 8 minutes, I had the main needle 3,5 turns out and it was running rich. I was alternating between idle and full speed runs with a 21x10 APC prop. Suddenly there was a low screeching noise increasing in intensity and I shut down immediately. I thought maybe a bearing or something similar was acting up, but when I rotated the engine by hand I could feel increased resistance when the valves where actuated, a bit more pronounced on one of the cylinders. I dismounted the engine and opened it up to see if I could see a problem, inside the engine there were some debris, especially in front of the engine. I put some after run oil into it and turned around, the bare metal to metal feeling and noise disappeared and everything felt like it should again. For good measure I adjusted all the valve clearances to 0,05 mm, they where set to around 0,30 to 0,15 from factory (a bit sloppy imo.) The manual states 0,04 to 0,10 mm for both intake and exhaust valves. I also cleaned the crankcase internally by using light oil and pressurized air to blow everything out. Now to the dilemma, I can´*t run the engine this way as it most certainly will run the valve train dry again, I left the drain nipple open to atmosphere (as specified in the manual) but now I am wondering if i should close it up to see if it forces more oil through the valve train. Anyone seen this before? What could cause this problem? I have seen custom back plates for sale that sucks the fuel through the crankcase before it goes to the cylinders, but I would prefer not to use 300$ more just to get this engine running as it should. The build quality seems good, although I have not inspected the valve train etc. as I would have to reset timing. Please help!

check the crank pins they probably broke . google it.
 Ole Martin 3 points
No, crank pins are fine.

Does anyone know, how many horsepowers has this engine? I suppose it has around five...
Dan  7 points - 3/9/2013

Does this beauty have to be mounted with the output shaft horizontal, or could it be mounted with the output shaft vertically? What will that do to lubrication, fuel flow, etc ????
 Tim750R 28 points
In theory, the engine will run in any orientation and lubrication will be fine. If tank is below, it would need to be very close to carb or pumped.
kristian  2 points - 3/5/2013

Will this be possible in this one ****> Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX composite 50cc Gas 2250mm :)
 Tim750R 28 points
Kristian, this is totally the wrong sort of engine for a Spitfire. This is radial, and Spitfire needs either single cyl. or in-line multi.

Does any one know how much horsepower/PS the ASP FS400 makes, and any and all tech info for this engine. Trying to figure out max weight this engine could fly? Thanks
 alan 2 points
i have been informed that the engine is equvilent to a 40cc petrol engine. im putting mine in a 112" beaver.

Is it possible to buy glow wire hzrness for a 5 cyleder radial engine? Components wold include wires to glow plugs, the power distribution module and battery to supply power to the glow plugs. Thanks John
 tkeliher 251 points
Most of us are using the glow driver and harness from Microsens in Germany.
WarbirdAL  11 points - 12/24/2012

I believe it will work. It looks like you might have to cut a couple of holes in the cowl. Check out this P-47. Looks like it has plenty of power!
 Louis 5 points
Nice! I assume this was an ASP400? Not sure if he has retracts, but shouldn't matter. The holes are a small compromise for that sound!
 Neil 6 points
$800 engine, $400 arcraft, $300 radio and no retracts **- PRICELESS

I have the Top Flite P47 Giant Scale ARF, it has an approximate weight of 24lbs with out an engine. Will this engine be powerful enough to fly this aircraft? Also what on board glow system to you recomend for this engine? Thanks.
stitch58  56 points - 10/1/2012

oh it's a 68in. wingspan weigh's 9lbs. without motor.

can anybody help me out i have a thomas morse scout s-4c 1-5 scale balsa made by k&w model's say's i can use a .60 to 90 in it but i'm new to nitro's the one's i see here look to tall this one here would look good on it but i think it's way to heavy can anyone tell me which one i could use thanks!
 H-KING_SCOTT 5161 points
Far too big and certainly too heavy for a .90 sized model.
 treetop40 5 points
Scott I have the ASP FS400AR with broken rod can you help me find new ones I tried on custumer support and all I get is eletical experts

Better in the Fairey Swordfish with 85,4 " wingspan

lockie  7 points - 5/8/2010

whats the correct weight for this engine ?
Is it 2800 g or or 5188 g the spec says 2800 but under that next to the stock counter it says 5188 g please clarify it for me please
 chapier61 169 points
Engine true weight is , of course, 2.800 g. But for calculation of the postal fees you must count on a theorical "weight" of 5.188 g.
Understood ?
 YORAM 12 points
2800 is the flying weight of hte engine. 5188 is the shipping weight.
 alex 9 points
does anyone no if this motor will fit in an asp corsair 85inch wing span ???
 Kym 8 points
Yes ..will fit nicely in ESM Corsair 85" ,diameter wise, with room to spare.Ditch the esm mount tube.Add a new 20mm firewall. If using Keleo exaust ring..some modify & fiddling is req. to fit cowl on.
ericn69  29 points - 4/16/2010

does someone has an operating manual for this?
 snappy 2294 points
search for OS sirius in tower hobbies and you can find a link to a manual
 YORAM 12 points
Just download from OS site the manual for their radial. That copy is what HK supplies as manual for this engine.
Shotgun06  26 points - 9/17/2009

What is the actual outside diameter of that engine? Want to know if it would fit inside the cowl of an airplane I am building.
 iamzoli 116 points
its 9". only question remains where do you get parts for this baby ?
BEST ANSWER CREDIT AWARDED
 YORAM 12 points
Its 25 cms,just measured mine.
hooker53  19 points - 9/5/2009

Thats just it. You won't. Thats why they would have the market!!
 H-KING_SCOTT 5161 points
Parts arriving in a few weeks.
Sorry for the delay.
hooker53  19 points - 6/6/2009

Like everyone else, The one I'm waiting on is the 450 three Cyl. from HK. Going from the price comparison on this one, it would be about $560.00 US. I would jump all over two of them. Hooker53
 venot 12 points
where is it possible to find 450 three Cyl. from HK
 H-KING_SCOTT 5161 points
The manufacturers of this engine don't make any 3cyl engines. Is it an old model you're looking for?
Felar Furlong  1081 points - 4/23/2009

o_O clearly something incredible!
i must admit, the price is really low, for the radial 5 cylinder engine of course!
 justice 579 points
i would say the price is low if it was an O.S.
 H-KING_SCOTT 5161 points
Are you joking?
What other prices have you seen for rotary engines such as this?
 snappy 2294 points
Jason its a RADIAL not a rotary (rotary's spin around the crankshaft)
But still a lovely engine wish I had a model to attach it to.
 H-KING_SCOTT 5161 points
You're right, dr Wankel would be turning in his grave right now. My bad.
 Mustang Sally 1084 points
Don't worry about dr Wankel, it's more Felix Millet who will turn over now. :)
justice  579 points - 4/22/2009

nice donk, price is a turn off!
 H-KING_SCOTT 5161 points
For a 5 cylinder radial, it's very low priced.
 Randall 201 points
Price is definitely not a turn off for a 5 cylinder. The saito 325(smaller then this one) retails now for $1999. So this ASP motor is less then half that price for a larger displacement. Even the 450 size saito 3 cylinder is $1500
 Dragevo 606 points
Wow, what a beautiful engine !
 flying dinosaur 60 points
It would be great if HK sold the Keleo exhaust collector ring(manifold). That item makes it sound much better than straight out of the ports and cuts the oil mess to a minimum. At the very least HK should carry glow drivers that are absolutely necessary for radials or inverted four strokes.
 flying dinosaur 60 points
I've been waiting since May 1st for this engine. Any word as to when the backordered stock will arrive?
 newcomer 23 points
Why do you send via EMS ,
I asked :
Air Parcel (FRANCE) 5000g - 5499g $65.41
Now , I have to deal with Chronopost in France :
That's the hell with them !
And it will cost extra charge for me !

currently running one of these in a 96" Gee Bee Y sporster! Awesome power and sounds brilliant. I would recomend running an onboard glow driver as lower cylinders tend to drop out under low throttle in flight.

great value for money, beats a petrol motr hanging of the fron of a 120.inch crop duster. Keleo Creations muffler a must. standard 5pcnt nitro and 17pcnt oil mix. OS F p-lugs a must. 21x12 prop gives 7700 RPM continuous for
average flight. Always idle down with onboard glow before
shut down. Cannmot fault this unit. if I were a rich man.... GUES WHAT...
