Hi!
I purchased this engine from hobbyking two months ago. Yesterday (April 27, 2013) I started it up the first time and it ran perfectly for 8 minutes, I had the main needle 3,5 turns out and it was running rich. I was alternating between idle and full speed runs with a 21x10 APC prop.
Suddenly there was a low screeching noise increasing in intensity and I shut down immediately. I thought maybe a bearing or something similar was acting up, but when I rotated the engine by hand I could feel increased resistance when the valves where actuated, a bit more pronounced on one of the cylinders.
I dismounted the engine and opened it up to see if I could see a problem, inside the engine there were some debris, especially in front of the engine. I put some after run oil into it and turned around, the bare metal to metal feeling and noise disappeared and everything felt like it should again. For good measure I adjusted all the valve clearances to 0,05 mm, they where set to around 0,30 to 0,15 from factory (a bit sloppy imo.) The manual states 0,04 to 0,10 mm for both intake and exhaust valves. I also cleaned the crankcase internally by using light oil and pressurized air to blow everything out.
Now to the dilemma, I can´*t run the engine this way as it most certainly will run the valve train dry again, I left the drain nipple open to atmosphere (as specified in the manual) but now I am wondering if i should close it up to see if it forces more oil through the valve train.
Anyone seen this before? What could cause this problem? I have seen custom back plates for sale that sucks the fuel through the crankcase before it goes to the cylinders, but I would prefer not to use 300$ more just to get this engine running as it should. The build quality seems good, although I have not inspected the valve train etc. as I would have to reset timing.
Please help!
Does this beauty have to be mounted with the output shaft horizontal, or could it be mounted with the output shaft vertically? What will that do to lubrication, fuel flow, etc ????
Does any one know how much horsepower/PS the ASP FS400 makes, and any and all tech info for this engine. Trying to figure out max weight this engine could fly? Thanks
Is it possible to buy glow wire hzrness for a 5 cyleder radial engine?
Components wold include wires to glow plugs, the power distribution module and battery to supply power to the glow plugs.
Thanks
John
I have the Top Flite P47 Giant Scale ARF, it has an approximate weight of 24lbs with out an engine. Will this engine be powerful enough to fly this aircraft? Also what on board glow system to you recomend for this engine? Thanks.
can anybody help me out i have a thomas morse scout s-4c 1-5 scale balsa made by k&w model's say's i can use a .60 to 90 in it but i'm new to nitro's the one's i see here look to tall this one here would look good on it but i think it's way to heavy can anyone tell me which one i could use thanks!
Is the engine holder the same to normal 2 stroke engine ?
I means how could i put it on my plane ? Don't worry about the cover
AND, wil this engine come with manual ?
whats the correct weight for this engine ? Is it 2800 g or or 5188 g the spec says 2800 but under that next to the stock counter it says 5188 g please clarify it for me please
Yes ..will fit nicely in ESM Corsair 85" ,diameter wise, with room to spare.Ditch the esm mount tube.Add a new 20mm firewall. If using Keleo exaust ring..some modify & fiddling is req. to fit cowl on.
Like everyone else, The one I'm waiting on is the 450 three Cyl. from HK. Going from the price comparison on this one, it would be about $560.00 US. I would jump all over two of them. Hooker53
Price is definitely not a turn off for a 5 cylinder. The saito 325(smaller then this one) retails now for $1999. So this ASP motor is less then half that price for a larger displacement. Even the 450 size saito 3 cylinder is $1500
It would be great if HK sold the Keleo exhaust collector ring(manifold). That item makes it sound much better than straight out of the ports and cuts the oil mess to a minimum. At the very least HK should carry glow drivers that are absolutely necessary for radials or inverted four strokes.
Why do you send via EMS , I asked : Air Parcel (FRANCE) 5000g - 5499g $65.41 Now , I have to deal with Chronopost in France : That's the hell with them ! And it will cost extra charge for me !

currently running one of these in a 96" Gee Bee Y sporster! Awesome power and sounds brilliant. I would recomend running an onboard glow driver as lower cylinders tend to drop out under low throttle in flight.

very good radial , i fly it alot and it is very reliable. You need a glow driver for it.
great value for money, beats a petrol motr hanging of the fron of a 120.inch crop duster. Keleo Creations muffler a must. standard 5pcnt nitro and 17pcnt oil mix. OS F p-lugs a must. 21x12 prop gives 7700 RPM continuous for average flight. Always idle down with onboard glow before shut down. Cannmot fault this unit. if I were a rich man.... GUES WHAT...
