Hey guys just wondering .. If I was to buy this it says I need my tx & rx what is this ???? And what is a 1300mah 35 20c lipo ... Help
 Daithi 54 points
You need your own transmitter (tx) and receiver (rx). the LiPo is the battery to operate the radio and the motor (the specification says 3 cells in series (3S), 1300 milliAmps per hour capacatity (1300 mAH) and it can handle full throttle for a short period

Great looking model, excellant moulding & spray paint finish, ruined by pre-applied tranfers that are bubbled/blistered and look a mess - please Mr HK either pre apply some decent ones or don't bother and let the buyer sort out

Are spare parts for this model available? I need a new nose cone. BTW, I absolutely LOVE this model! Lots of wing and a very light wing loading make for a fantastic flying model! :D PLEASE tell me I can buy a replacement nose come!

I'm a 40 yr. RC vet. but have never tried basis FPV before. can anyone help a very disabled and braindammaged Viet vet. get the basics of a true FPV system. I don't need video recording or any other shazbat. Whiteriverelk * Yahoo****. Just the basic FPV system please. Just like when I use to fly.
 Fonzie 12 points
Go to ****myrcmart**** and Hubsan has the perfect first time FPV plane. The transmitter even has a 4 inch color screen, it has a 6axis gyro built in for beginners and it has a built in GPS return feature if you lose sight of it. Only $ 209.00 on sale

How long can you fly it for?
 AegeanFox 43 points
Well that depends on your battery.....
nexundai  25 points - 1/8/2013

Good as first EDF plane ? I ve been flying a bixler and now a aerobatical decathlon doing rolls looping .. THanks !!
 AegeanFox 43 points
This is a middle-winged aircraft..... it is really good for aerobatics and surely it responds pretty fast... why don't you buy an F-8 or A-6?
 xmech2k 13 points
Good 1st EDF? If you're expecting speed, this isn't what you're looking for unless you will do an upgrade. But it is extremely stable and can fly extremely slow, since it's just a big wing! I've upgraded mine to a high power 4S system, and it really moves. So the potential is there for speed.

Can i use tx turnigy 9x for this craft
 Bellakelpie 63 points
Yes. As long as the reciever binds with the transmitter it will be all o.k.

What kind of foam is this plane made of?
 KaosKane 1429 points
this jet is EPS more rigid and lighter thn EPO but more brittle and harder to repair For the Price it is a great jet and fast enuf to be exiting to an experienced pilot

Hello I have got battery 2200mAh 3S 20C and can I put this battery in to this plane ?
 KaosKane 1429 points
the extra weight is no probs u will just need to put the lipo closer to the middle of jet to keep to keep the cog the same..Hth

 xmech2k 13 points
You'll have to cut open the foam aft of where the stock battery goes. Unfortunately, this weakens the nose in that area, so be gentle with the landings then! An easy fix though if that breaks, and then you can reinforce it while you're at it. I'm running 4s 2200 now!
 KaosKane 1429 points
nice setup it must be blindingly fast on 4cell
 xmech2k 13 points
Oh yes! Flies like a jet now! That's what I love about this plane. It's an awesome starter jet due to that huge wing, but it's easy to upgrade. Bring them to the USA warehouse please, HobbyKing!

This looks more like an F-106 than an F-4, maybe its a hybrid?
 davefost 8 points
You may be thinking of the F4 Phantom which is a different aircraft. The F4D Skyray was built by Douglas prior to the F4 Phantom. US Navy designations can be a little confusing through the 50's and early 60's. The F4D (aka: the 'Ford') has some very cool history and was a real rocket in it's day.
 xmech2k 13 points
D=This is definitely an F4D, but with enlarged intakes for the EDF.

Tried a servo reverser ?
 cfjc16 15 points
I ordered one and a new Turnigy 9x 9Ch Transmitter. It is able to be programmed. Some of the stuff is back-ordered so I will have to wait. My other transmitter works properly if I turn it 90 deg. to the right but then the power is operated sideways.
 Stuart 12 points
DO you mean your left right is reversed only on one side ?
 cfjc16 15 points
If the left right is OK, then the up down is reversed. If the up down is OK, then the right left is reversed. On another setting the up down is on the right left controls. That's when I can turn the box 90 deg. to the right and all controls work as they should, except the transmitter has the throttle working right to left at the top. The servo reverser is still on back-order but we had snow here so I cant fly right now anyway.
 Stuart 12 points
What Reciever do you have ? I take it you have Y lead on the Ailierons and 1 lead for the elevator and 1 lead for the ESC ? Is your throttle usually on the right or left stick ?
 cfjc16 15 points
The transmitter is an E-DOMODEL 6 channel with an 8 channel receiver. (See below.) This plane only has 2 servos, no rudder. I plugged one into the elevator and the other into the aileron channel. Should I have used a Y lead? Which channel?
 Stuart 12 points
Ah, beginning to make sense a bit now. So it has ailierons on the wings, controlled by 1 or 2 servos ? Does it have an elevator (Up and down) on the tail ?
Sorry Im asking so much, just trying to understand the setup. If it has 2 servos (one for each ailerion, then you need a Y lead and plug that into your Recievers AIL chanel. Just need to know about your elevator now. Which plane are you trying this on ?
 cfjc16 15 points
Ailerons on the wings with 1 servo on each side. It is the F4D-1 plane above. No servos on the tail, for the elevator or rudder. I tried the Y lead and it doesn't work. The 3rd servo is for steering. The transmitter is mode 2
 Stuart 12 points
Ive treid posting this twice now, keeps disappearing and not working !!! Last go.
Right...unplug it all, put one servo into aileron and one into elevator on Rx. Then make sure no reversing or mixes are on. Try it. When you pull up if only one moves, reverse the wires on the Rx. If they both move but the wrong way, reverse on your Tx...I hope !!
 cfjc16 15 points
I have tried all that. I think what I need is a V-tail mixer. I have it on back-order. I will wait until I receive my order. I can install lights on the F4D-1 or fly my Bixler while I am waiting. Thanks for your help.
 Stuart 12 points

I am having trouble setting the controls on my transmitter. I bought a Cessna 182 http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem
.asp?idProduct=16659
It was destroyed and I want to use the trans/rx with this F4D1 plane I bought. The transmitter is an E-DOMODEL 6 channel with a 8 channel receiver. It has mixing and reverse but if I have the right and left correct, the up and down are reversed. If I have the up and down correct, the right and left are reversed. I cant find a setting that is correct for both. Can anybody help?

 KaosKane 1429 points
It is eps u can tell by the small bead size also HK make a point of telling u if it is EPO. Eps is lighter and stronger but EPO is more flexible less prone to Hangar Rash and eaiser to repair (with CA and Kiker) HTH

Hi All, I've had lots of fun with this model in stock configuration with 1500mAh 3s battery (over 40 flights now). Time has come to upgrade to get some more performance. Any suggestions on good motor upgrade with some better thrust / speed? Thanx!
 KaosKane 1429 points
go to 4cell lipo using stock gear and bench test replace evrthing that has the magic smoke come out of it (probably the ESC) replace the smoky bit using HK 50a 4cell esc or HK2839 EDF Outrunner 2800kv for 70mm, HK2627 EDF Outrunner 4300kv for 64mm choose one motor :} if u have he $ replace both the esc and motor and put the old bits in ur spares pile (some people have a box but who am i kidding lol) HTH

I'm on my 2nd upgrade on theis plane. Now pulling 47A! Using 'someone else's' fan and motor, but a HK 70A ESC (All I had around) and the Zippy Compact 4s 2200mah batteries. I already trimmed the foam in the nose to fit 2200 3s packs, and the Zippy Compacts only needed a hair more space. It's AWESOME! Flies like it has a turbine in it now! Only lasts around 4 minutes, but oh what 4 minutes those are! And she can still get pretty slow for landing.
 KaosKane 1429 points
sound great
 vaida32 93 points
Thanks for your comments guys. I have purchased the HK T50 and have been putting more time in with that one. Flies great. I will at some stage get back to my trusty F4D and look at some of the mods you guys have suggested. Cheers

Can the battery bay handle a 1600 mah (102x35x17 cm)?
 Michael 13 points
No, about 80mm (not cm!) is as long as the bay can be modified for. I use an 1800mah 75mm x 32mm x 28mm and it's a tight fit even with the bay trimmed out wider and longer, plus it's at the limit for weight in the nose. Gets me 6 minutes of WOT flight, or nearly 8 minutes with good throttle management. I take off from short mowed grass runway. Regards!
 h3rry007 11 points
1800mAh lipo battery brands what the size of 75mm x 32mm x 28mm and you say (I use an 1800mAh 75mm x 32mm x 28mm) thanks
 Michael 13 points
I bought these 1800mah packs off Ebay actually they were the largest capacity I could fit in the Skyray's battery tray (with some trimming of the battery tray sides required). Most batteries I found were wayyyyy too long to fit. These are quite short batteries for their capacity.
Caulnian  5 points - 1/20/2012

Will this handlaunch?
 abel 12 points
yes it can i have this plane 1/2 throttle and up!!
 Kellyann 16226 points
Caulnian yes of course. With out any problem. Just power up before you let go. It tends to roll on power up. I hope this helps
 Michael 13 points
I had very poor luck trying to handlaunch... 1st there's nothing to hold onto on the belly, and 2nd though the power is good it still needs more airspeed to actually fly than I could manage with a handlaunch at WOT. I broke my airframe in two 3 times out of 8 handlaunches... I gave that up and put the gear back on! Bend the main gear wires forward so the back gear has forward rake to it, really helps the plane to rotate on takeoff with gear! The mains are too far behind the CG point from the factory, even the real Skyray had a slight forward rake to it's mains. Regards!

hi i bought this plane and i'm new at electric planes, i bought a 1550 mah rhino battery, with xt-60 connector, but the plane has got a hxt connector, i don't know what adaptor i need, can someone help me? i'm new at electric planes. ty
 Ronald007 406 points
I have two option to suggest, either cut and resolder an xt-60 to the ESC lead on the plane or an HXT to the battery. If you need it now it will be more expensive, but check you local hobby store. If you can wait for shipping, you can find either here and it will be a lot cheaper than you local hobby store. I wouldn't use an adapter, just resolder the plug. Just make sure you keep the orientation correct or you can fry the electronics.

3 thumbs up!
I received the plane yesterday in good condition. The final assembly took only one our. Today was the maiden flight without problems. The EDF ist strong enough for take off from grass but it is very loud and seems to be out of balance. Hand launch is easy too. The plane looks even better
without the gear and you can fly faster or longer.
This product is worth the money and I can highly recommend it.

1 thumbs up!
For us Europeans, buying this little beauty from Germany has to be the greatest bargain around. No import duties, ten bucks shipping and a beautiful, beautiful model. So are there no beefs? Well, on mine some of the decals had suffered abrasion, and the glue supplied was past its best. And there are no instructions worth the name, so I am stumped as to how to program the up/down left/right set up-I hope someone at the club knows! I suspect I may want to strengthen the cockpit mounting, and will be interested to see how the undercarriage stands up to my treatment: it looks like it's DESIGNED to let go on heavy landings to avoid damaging the foam.So all in all, this is perhaps not the best kit for those with unlimited funds. But for us lesser mortals, this is astonishing value.

I purchased the Skyray a few weeks ago and I am very pleased with its performance. It is easy to fly and seems to be tough, except for nose cone. It has quickly become my favorite among my stable of RC foam jets. I prefer to launch using a bunge system. I would like to suggest that if you do try the bunge launch for first flights, trim the elevator up. With the controls at what appears neutral, my airplane had a nose down trim. I reset the "neurtal" on the controls nose up equal to the thickness of the elevons and it was perfect for launch take-offs and level flight at about 60 power. I have been flying RC airplanes for about a year and I feel very comfortable flying the F4D and it is easy to fly compared to the other jets I have. The negatives...the nose cone will dent easily if lightly hit. It needs to be filled to make it stronger for little bumps. After I dented it the first time with a slight bump, I took it off, smoothed out the dent and tried to reinforce it with a 1/4 inch of epoxie mixed with microballoons. Bad idea. The heat of the epoxie setting up cause the this plastic to warp. If you try something like this, set it in a small pool of water to keep the heat to a level it doesn't melt the plastic nose. HobbyKing needs to carry replacement parts like this for the airplanes it sells. One other negative, the glue in main gear not enough to hold it in place even with n

I bought this model nearly a year ago, and had a lot of fun with it. Since i wanted to land on grass I didn't install the landing gear and removed the front servo. Hand launching this thing is a bit tricky, it needs a good throw at full throttle but it's possible. I used a 1500mAh 3S Lipo and got flight times of around 10 minutes. We tried to start it with a 4000mah 3S Lipo but it was to heavy for hand launching (if you have a really long runnway this might be possible). The quality of the model is great, I crashed it into the ground twice and all I had to do is glue the front back on. Even the loss of power at 50m height (the battery fell out) didn't result in any damage (the model simply glided to the ground). The only bad thing is the ESC: Mine worked for about 20-30 flights than it was defect (simply got very hot). I had no problems with any other parts, the servos are working great, the EDF is a bit noisy but i had no problems so far. The flight performance is great: relly big loops, rolls, and everything else is possible. In fact this plane is quite fast but pretty easy to fly. Even without the motor you can glide back to your starting position (of course its not a glider, but it doesnt stall untill very slow). I'm having a lot of fun with this model, -1 star for the very cheap esc.
