Hobby King Pitts Special Plug-n-Fly / 4 Aileron version (USA Warehouse)

Hobby King Pitts Special Plug-n-Fly / 4 Aileron version (USA Warehouse)

The HobbyKing Brushless Pitts Special is as exciting to look at as it is to fly!
Its scale details complete with wheel pants and Pitts livery make it a very attractive plane, however the excitement doesnt stop there! This little foamie is equipped with 4 ailerons to give spirited aerobatic performance and the included oversize outrunner and 10x4.7 prop gives more than enough power for all aerobatic flight, and when you feel the need to turn it up a notch just switch the 10x4.7 for a 11x4.7 propeller for hovering capability! All this and still this little foamie is very controllable at slow speeds. This plane loves a walking speed fly-by.
A combination of scale looks, excellent flight characteristics and great power plant make this fomie a real winner.
The Pitts comes 97% pre-built and will take you around 10 minutes to attach the main wing and include your own receiver.

Shahram, Hot glue gun works the best on foam.
shahram  15 points - 5/21/2013

What type of glue works on this plane? I recently bought a secone one of this plane becasue the first one got thrashed after losing signal with an original spektrum receiver, go figure. I tried putting the old one back together with foam tac glue and gorilla glue and it just ate away at the foam, does anyone know what glue this plane will accept. Is the foam EPO? I don't want to use the wrong glue on the second plane. Thanks.

I ordered one of these a while ago, and it has been "being packed in the warehouse" for 5 days now. I'm starting to think they don't actually have any in stock.
Vulcan106  4 points - 3/27/2013

Seems to me that a truly aerobatic plane like this with 4 ailerons should have at least 2 servos. One for each pair of ailerons. Not excited about this setup.
RVaitor  1155 points - 12/22/2012

Anyone try a bigger motor combo in this thing?
 pikestaff 31 points
Much easier to just use 4s batteries. With even 4s 1300mAh this plane will go straight up as far as you are able. Stock motor will have NO TROUBLE on 4s but ESC will need to be switched. You will not believe what a difference this simple change makes!
 RVaitor 1155 points
The motor isn't rated 4s.
 pikestaff 31 points
And it's not rated for 400 w. either, but handles that quite well. Mine has been flying on 4s 30c batteries for over 2 years, several times weekly without any troubles. ESC is a 40a HobbyWing. Most motors will handle overrating provided any big heat jump is accounted for - excellent cooling is a must.

A 40c 3s will give you the quicknes you want., an 11x7 prop will throw the sustained tourque needed., for most aerobatic ops with no additional heating or damage to your esc....feather in a little more up elevator in t/o and landing though to compensate for the larger prop circle....try it....youl like it...quicker, faster and better climb-outs and vetical rates of climb.
 bögi82 8 points
I fly my one with 4s too. on 3 s i think it isnt agile enough. on 4s you have a lot of more fun with fast rolls and loops in full throttle.i fly with 4s more than one year now.
 RVaitor 1155 points
Hmmm.... Switched to 4S25-5C Nano-Tech, HK30A esc and the motor is glowing hot. WTF? Esc isn't too bad, but the motor almost melted the cowl w/ a 10x8 prop.
 pikestaff 31 points
Hmmm....guess you need to go back to 3s. TFB - when so many fly just fine on 4s, must have got the one that won't. Pity.
 RVaitor 1155 points
What prop are you running? XX x 4.7? Maybe the 10x8 is too pitchy..
stitch58  56 points - 9/5/2012

you know two battery's will fit in this one in first behind motor then one in the second spot make a parallel connector twice as long flite time's.
 RVaitor 1155 points
If this thing had two batts it would fly like a rock! The flight time sure would NOT be 2X as long. It would be fighting the extra weight and would probably be LESS flight time.
stitch58  56 points - 9/5/2012

got it today but it says esc suppose to be a 20 but the one in it says 2-10 so what is it a 20 or 10?? anybody know.
 RVaitor 1155 points
It's a 20A.

is it possible to mix in flaperons to the lower ailerons whilst leaving the upper ailerons unaffected, for a flap like effect for landings and take off?
 Rcf16pilot 9 points
Say this plane will land so slow you can close your eyes. Actually you need a little power to keep the airspeed up on final. if you want to put flaps on this plane you you have to put a servo up in the top wing. I have this pitts and it flies great.

Does anyone know if the ESC is programmable? This my first plane from HK and I can't find any tech info the 2*10 ESC. Like LV cutoff, timing, etc. I would like to protect my LiPos.
 HEATEDHAT 33 points
just get a 2.00 bat alarm
 RVaitor 1155 points
Not programmable. It does have the LV cutoff though.

I have discovered that the batterry goes into the forward hatch, after covering the motor mount screws with sealer, but what goes into the vented hatch behind the gear struts? weight & balance is a part of my issue and there dosent seem to be enough room in this box for ESC or Receiver. Help!

Getting back into flying after 20 years of raising kids. Could I start with this Pitts? Can I take off grass like on high school athletic fields? What size extra battery should I buy (if I do?)? What are its stall characteristics? I hear alot about some throttle on landings. Are the landings "hot"?
 joshua 15 points
not good for grass landings i have tryed.buy a 11x4.7 prop for slow flying and controlled landings this is a great plane and is a blast to fly enjoy
BEST ANSWER CREDIT AWARDED
 magicman9493 6 points
i used parkzone supercub landing gear on mine and it will handle shorter grass with ease. The landings are not bad. The plane slows down nicely and is very stable on landing. keep in mind that bigger batteries equal more weight and will increase the speed needed on landing. I use 3s 1300 mah batts and get close to 10 min flights with a parkzone 10x8 prop from the parkzone mustang. that prop is a direct fit and really makes the plane come to life!
theSelf  45 points - 2/8/2012

As this is made of the more fragile EPP foam (compared to EPO)- any tips on strengthening this plane's airframe- carbon fiber strips or fiber glassing anyone?
 HEATEDHAT 33 points
With a plane this small. I would avoid cf sticks. Plus you have 4 leading edges! I would just use packing tape across all the surface edges

small strips of colored duck tape on the leading edge of wings,to prevent chiups and breaks

What battery/motor is everyone using? Any real 3d flight possible? Also, what prop??
 steven 3 points
I am running the stock motor (dat700), with a 10x8 prop. and 3 cell 1300mah turnigy nano tech batteries, the love the plane it will do anything you ask of it with that set up. 3/4 throttle will keep it at hover and full throttle you can climb to the stars!
 Ek-trician 319 points
No, it won't do proper 3D.
 theSelf 45 points
I have the same question regarding 3d-if it can hover at 3/4 throttle- why can't it do 3D- what do you mean and/or what classifies 'proper' 3D? Would any further mods help it to be more capable of 3D? I want to practice 'harriers' and 'hovering' and enter 3d flying as an interediate pilot..- thanks in adavance
 joshua 15 points
you need a 11x4.7 electric prop that will solve any problems
 Brian 9 points
Your ailerons need to be extended close to the fuselage and you need to widen them. I just used thin light stiff foam about 1/4" deep and a 1/16th to 1/8th inch thick and glued to the trailing edge. 3D's great. Regards,

Just wondering if fapsauss ever bought one of these and what he thought of it?

What type of winds can this plane handle with the stock setup?
 magicman9493 6 points
I have flown mine in up to 10 mph winds but anything over about 5 mph gets very interesting. The plane is very light so it can get bounced around in the wind. The stock set up has the power to handle atleast a 10 mph wind.
 steven 3 points
This would also depend on the quality of the air, I fly my glider at the beach in nearly 30mph winds where the air is good and clean coming off the ocean, inland where there is more turbulence can get pretty scary with half the wind! you can always nose it down into the wind, if its clean air....

Do you think that a beginner with 25 flights under their belt and some experience on a simulator could fly this?
 FLYRAGWINGS 6 points
Yes, this plane flys very slow if you eed it to.
Mine flys so well I was surprized.Just keep some power on for the landings.Great kit!
 magicman9493 6 points
Yes. This is a very good flying plane with the stock setup. check out my youtube review.

I want use my Turnigy 9x reciver in this plane but it only works 6v maximum. As you know this plane using 3s batterys. i don't want fry my reciver and servos. Is there any way to use turnigy reciver in this plane?
 Rcf16pilot 9 points
Hello How do you figure that you can't use your turnigy receiver if your running electric? The ESC should handle all current issues for the receiver.
BEST ANSWER CREDIT AWARDED
 Jeebs 46 points
Yes, plug your battery into a esc/speed controller then the esc plugs into your receiver and will power your servos. This is the plug and fly model of the pitts so the esc has a bec which will regulate the voltage from your battery and make it usable by your receiver. So you don't have to worry about frying your receiver.

Have you found the C.G.yet? It will change too and the added weight will be a factor to consider so it will fly right! It seems no one will address this and when this is found , Then will some one tell us both? CRASH DADDY

What is the CG. No booklet with kit.
 Ematech 24 points
The CG for first flights is: on the rear wing mounting bolt of the TOP wing. This equates to about the 50 point of the TOP wing at the tips. Just put your finger under the rear bolt of the top wing bolt with the battery installed and the airplane should be level Move the CG rearward carefully!! This is one sweet airplane! The actual time to have it ready for flight was 11 min. Yes !! that is right 11 min ready to fly! the balance with a Zippy 1300 is just slightly nose heavy which is great fo
 brian 3 points
I used a 1300 also and from the rear bolt it seemed to be balanced on my finger, but that is a lot of contact with the plane for balancing for me to really be sure. Maiden flight it seemed to be a bit tail heavy. Inverted with just a touch of elevator to keep the nose level all it wanted to do is climb. Even after releasing the elevator it continued to climb and pull around to being almost right side up. Normal flight there was a slight tendency to drop the tail a little bit. I haven't dont any major mods to the plane. If you have any suggestions i'd be glad to hear them

Where should the CG be measured from?
 -Greg- 7 points
I love this plane!! It has been great right out of the box!

The center of the bottom wing, helps if u hold it upside down.

What type of foam is the plane made from?
 magicman9493 6 points
EPO foam. The plane is very light and durable. This type of foam can be easily repaired using some foam safe CA and foam safe kicker.
Newbi  6 points - 10/14/2010

Are replacement parts available?
 magicman9493 6 points
I have not seen any parts available. Look around on some of the forums and you will find that a lot of people have this airplane and many have documented all of thier upgrades and mods. All that i have done to mine is to use clear packing tape on the inside of the plastic nose cowling to hopefully prevent it from shattering in case of impact. also i used some tape on the bottoms of the lower wing tips to protect the tips from any ground s****es. A plane at this price can almost just be replace
Stacks  506 points - 10/8/2010

I bought this plane last summer and after adding a little weight to the nose quickly became my most flown plane...talk about fun and easy to fly and land. I give this 5 stars (more if they had them ). Once it was in the air everyone would have a positive comment about it. I have had more pilots ask if they could fly it more than any other plane I would fly..GET IT, YOU WILL LOVE IT.

1 thumbs up!
This is a fine flyer and perfect for low-time pilots like me. VERY easy assembly. Excellent flying characteristics.

Overall quality is mediocre decals poor and fall off immediately.

Parts seem to be non-existant. HobbyKing would do ALL of us a real service to make parts available.

4 stars only because of parts non-available.

Got mine last year and love it. Got rid of the 10X4.7 prop and used a 10 X 7 prop from HBZ Super Cub. Makes it fly faster. It will float slowly at 1/3 power and lands easily. Rolls, snap rolls and loops are effortless at any speed. I also got rid of the wheel pants and replaced the wheels with 2.5 inch Dubro wheels. Very very good plane with lots of potential.

I recvd. my Pitts in good shape. The packaging was very good. The only thing missing was the instruction manual. I have 2 small screws with black plastic knobs on them, 23 mm total length, and no clue as to where they are supposed to go. There must be a place for them or they wouldn't be there. No help from the pictures. .
