P-51D Dago Red 1600mm EPO w/Electric Retracts, Flaps, Lights (PNF)
This is one big foam Warbird! Being Plug N Fly it is a fast build model packed with enough features and scale detail to make this one bird you will be proud to own.
Made from EPO foam, this model is practical despite it's size, a one peice removable wing makes for easy transport, even the tail can be un-screwed if desired. The pre-fitted servo's and electric retracts are all pre-labelled making field assembly fast and simple. It uses the kind of 4s packs that are becoming very common now on large foamie's, chances are, you already have a few in your flightbox. The Pre-Fitted motor has plenty of power for those scale Warbird aerobatics or just straffing your flying field!
Scale detail is just superb, as are the pre-applied decals, features include pre-installed electric retracts/tailwheel, there is the very scale 4 bladed prop & spinner, the navigation lights, adjustable radiator outlet, drop tanks, moulded exhaust stubs and guns. The flaps keep the landing speed right down, this model has no nasty Warbird tip stall tendencies, it just floats in like a trainer. If you have ever fancied owning a Warbird but were put off by all the stories you have heard about them being "difficult" to fly, this is the model for you!

I have seen a lot of entries about a bigger motor and esc for these 1600mm p51's but no info. what is a suitable replacement, motor, esc and battery that will accept the four blade prop??? I want extra power just in case. dont like the park flyer feel to this plane. I have the "BIG BEAUTIFUL DOLL" and have upsized the motor but had to use a regular prop setup and would rather use the four blade prop if I can, any suggestions?
I have a suggestion for you, you probably will need to be able to check your amps/watts at full throttle, so that you know it isn't maxed out already. I have a few of the FMS 1400mm planes and I have had great success just using a 5s instead of a 4s battery. My mustang and zero go vertical easily now, lots of power, and it was still below the max amperage the motor is rated for. if you fly at full throttle all the time, this probably isn't an option, I do maybe 30% of the time, no problems so far, motor about 100 deg. F. when I land. Good luck!
HK used the same mould and introduced this new color theme. Creating a new mould just to remove the gun ports would cost more than it's worth. I'm sure you could easily cut/sand it out and repaint it, but I don't think it is much of a distraction. Do you?
New motor? I have found a much bigger replacement motor that fits and uses original 4 blade prop. Will run on 6s and a lot more power. I did post a detailed description but it never appeared here(motor from a different source, not HK).
Absolutely not. You will fry the Esc, then when you put a (much) bigger Esc in you will fry the motor. The standard set up struggles on 4s lipos due to the major drag/load in trying to spin that 4 bladed prop. It really needs a stonger motor. I wish they would recommend a upgrade that still takes the 4 blades.
Hi Rabak, I used the HK retract HKD-514 with the sprung oleo leg SKU - 344000012 and some nice metal hub wheels. I used 5mm round bar to mount the oleos to the retract. The wheels fit perfectly into the original wheel wells in the wing. You do have to enlarge the mounting for the retracts by removing foam. I used two lollipop sticks superglued together and epoxied into either side of the retract opening to take the retract mounting screws. Stronger than the original, the retracts work every time and suspension absorbs a lot more than the original solid UC. I did cut 10mm of the Oleo spring length and stretched them back to original length just to soften them up a little (this is not a heavy plane). A reasonably cheap but effective upgrade. Would love to find a bigger motor that will take the 4 blade prop and run it on 6s. Hope you find this useful.
That 4 blade prop really works the battery (4s) the esc, now a 100amp Turnigy Deluxe, and the motor. They all get too hot very quickly. Needs a bigger motor to drive that scale prop. It is under powered with nothing in reserve if you get into trouble. Put heavier duty retracts in with sprung oleo legs and new wheels. Originals broke first landing. The scale prop makes it impossible to fit a different motor. Does your prop shaft fit the motor with 4 bolts?
Which retracts did u use, as the stock fitted ones broke on a hard landing, they r too weak. did u get them from hobby king, would u plz tell the part no
Anyone knows where can i find exact relpacement for Dago Red brushless motor? Mines burned after running 5S. Which motor could fit back on stock motor mounting and could fit on it original prop nose cone?
I do. I happen to have the big folding wing Corsair. It has a much bigger 6s compatible motor designed to run a much larger prop. Amazingly it is a perfect fit on the Mustang mountsize wise etc. You just have to increase the hole in the motor mount where the motor shaft sticks through at the back from 13 to 13.5mm. With a modelling knife take a little plastic off the prop backplate
to make a ositive key on the Corsair shaft and away you go (but much faster). Took me ten minutes to fit the motor and what a difference! Just oredr the folding wing Corsair motor and shaft (you must use the Corsair shaft as the mounting holes are different to the bMustang shaft. Happy flying.
when is the dc3 arriving you said they were on back order when i tried to purchase one and would let me know on arrival missas wants the money if it is not availiable in the short please tell me its close Peter
You should contact the HK 24 hour support located at the top right corner of the web page. They can answer your question, just give them your name, order # and email.
HK, do you have the landing gear for this plane?
Your Live Support Online can't provide help and she gave the page for the retracts. But can't find the parts for this plane.
hello ralf frotten, gee you like this to do ya . mad hey . you flown it yet ,, mine is hear . needs the prop change to get performance from that motor , is the first thing i found ,a bit just for looks but works ,yes a little hard to balence
I think I like em all!!, I get them when I can afford to, (and justify it to the missus!) I get one about every 3 months, remember I just started a few months ago and when my next delivery comes (3wings in it) I'll have five.

And LOOK its Monday soon Sales big .. IN HOBBYKING ,, Yess Payday also .
Can someone tell me if there is a panel mark where the COG is? Or where i should have the COG, i cant quite figure it out from the manual and want to get this bird in the sky!
Usually there are no markings for the CG location. Most of the time, they give a set distance from the leading edge in mm or inches. However, please note that the locations are sometimes incorrect, or a group of flyers have flown their planes with an alternate setting with better results. So it is best to check here on this discussion blog, or RCG.
Hello,
I received the plane and is now built.
When I connect the 4S 4000 mAh battery, the ESC is beeping continuously.
I downloaded the doc to program ESC but none of the docs found seems to be correct.
If I put to full throttle before connect the battery, it seems that I can enter programming mode but nothing is corresponding to the doc.
I also visited the docs for the other P-51 without success.
The esc is a "Topfire TP-E04-0080".
Thanks for your help.
It's beeping because you haven't set the throttle range properly. Put the throttle to max on the transmitter, turn it on, then once you hear a few beeps there will be a pause and then put it back to no throttle. Now you've set the throttle range and it'll perform correctly.
Thank you Dan. I have been told about the throttle range by HK support. I changed the travel of the throttle to 115% and it work. I just made the first flight today .... wonderfull.
I will give your suggestion a trial next time.
So i recieved my plane, and in the box there are some chinglish instructions saying that some of the hinges are prone to breaking so they have included spare hinges... what control surfaces have people had trouble with? There are 12 hinges in the bag
Am waiting on delivery of this plane at the moment, what esc is in it? I know it needs to be 80A, am more talking brand/name of esc. Also is the stock esc reliable or should i order another of a better brand?
Hey guys, mine arrived with 45A ESC, is this enough? I thought it's 80A. o_O
and did u guys make any holes for ventalation? ESC is completely closed up in there.
tnx
Siddman will not do. It does say 80ESC in the listing. For a 4558 you need at least a 60esc. You should contact CS and raise a ticket. Also place i note under ISSUE tab above. PLEASE. I hope this helps
hey Kellyann, thanks for your reply. I allready contacted CS, but they told me 45A is more than enough and 80A would just be over-doing it. It's winter here, so there's no rush, but I want to resolve this issue before something bad happens in mid air.
*ps: i just send them an issue for description.
Two things: First, I agree with the other respondents* 45amps is not adequate. Just go look at a the specs for 4258 (or 4250, or similar) motors and you'll see max current well above 45 amps. Second, that's all beside the point. They advertise it with an 80 amp esc, so they need to deliver an 80 amp esc. I suggest you not let them even get the whole "45 is enough" conversation get going. Focus on the FACT that they said it comes with am 80amp esc, so that's what they need to deliver.
not sure about the spare parts, but there's replacement spinner in combo with this plane. or just search for "P-51D Dago Red & Shangri La - Replacement Spinner"
Those are not unique parts to this plane and there's a big range of both to choose from. ESC has to be 80 amps or more, pick any one of about 20 different ones fitting that description.
I changed the ESC , now it's 200A HK
I know the brushless car run with 5S
Do you think the original brushless 400kV can run under 6S with a propeller 2 blades 15x8 for example? .
Its Looks Like Quite Possible ,,Play with combinations ,AS all Take a Variety of props ,Finding them Is Best Under test , And Temperature is all we really worry about ,,
i have not flown it yet ,, but can see a slow Motor Under this Setup provided try 150 amp ESC so what it like ,under 22 volt ,and smaller prop,.I will soon try some changes before flight, but at this set up of 14.8 ,,I can see 18,4 and up might be better ,.under this Small ESC ,provided with plane.
Hi yeah ,mine is Looking like ready ,, The weight additional required , Evan If i put the 2 hard case Battery in the front ,. Where Is the Best Center G,
Where is the Balance point best .. Can you say before I try Myself to find..
Interesting looking plane, but I don't think I could buy it. "Dago" is a word that has negative associations here in Australia. It is a word used to describe some European immigrants in the early 20th century, Don't think I could feel good about the plane with a name like this :-(
not sure but my friend bought the p51 mustang in that size and had to replace every electrical component except for the motor to get it to fly properly so I'd expect to spend a bit more than what the plane costs.
Andy, if it makes you feel better, the original "Dago Red" was re-built in 1981 by hall offame air racer Bill "tiger" Destefani, a Bakersfield California farmer of Italian descent. He also Built, and flew "Strega" which is Italian for witch. If Mr. Destefani didn't have a problem with the name, maybe you shouldn't either :) Just sayin. And, yes I bet with a little "Destefaniing" this model could be made to be "scary fast"...Think I'll get me one, and give it a go.

Received my second Dago. Decals on this one are in great shape. Shipped to Canada and not a mark on her. No dents or scratches. As far as finishing quality... amazing. Replaced ESC and servos. Plane looks great in the air. Especially against snow covered fields. Red on white is nice. Thanks HobbyKing.

Hello, I have had many problems with this aircraft. First I paid 37 euros customs then it got lost in the box because it was improperly packaged: the exhaust pipes plastic, not protected by plastic bubble had damaged wings and fuselage. Hobby king royally granted me 10 dollars in compensation ... Then another surprise for installation: two elevator servos and drift had broken their axes. So I bought two servos to replace them. After the final connection, the engine will not start because the drive 8O amp is useless!!
That's a lot of things, and very little serious. This aircraft has not been tested before being shipped. I decided to no longer be a customer for Hobbyking total aircraft cost me more than if I had bought in France. consider the desirability of importing a radio controlled aircraft from China
