Mig-15 EDF Jet 70mm Electric Retracts, Flaps, Airbrake, EPO Camo (PNF) (AUS Warehouse)

A true cold war warrior, the Mig 15 was produced in greater numbers than any jet fighter in history, it is a true classic with good reason, and this amazing EPO Plug N Fly model really does this amazing aircraft justice.

Being PNF it is a fast build, the powerful EDF unit/ESC combo is pre-installed as are all the servos. This model is a good size and needs a 4s Lipoly to achieve the kind of performance you are looking for, also for a nice change in this class, the Lipoly compartment has been designed to take a large pack for decent flight times.

As well as being a superb looking and performing model, this Mig packed with features such as pre-installed electric retracts with scale looking under-carriage legs, magnetic drop tanks, flaps are again pre-installed as are the airbrakes which you can either set up on a seperate channel or connect to extend with your flaps, in fact this tough EPO jet only needs one thing......an F-86 from this new range of cold war classics to dogfight with!

Just recvd mine in Australia. Have noted all o/seas reviews. Mine is missing anything to connect the nosewhl servo to the steering arm. Has anyone flown one in AUS. yet? If so, did yours perhaps include 2/ fine cables of some sort? Thanks, and i will aim to log a review. First impressions are the lge dia. fuse. Choked nose intake, due to the nose wheel well. Very thick fuse walls 25-30mm. DSR retracts. Painted, but, camo is a tranfer. Small whl dia.-N=35[45 will fit]* Mn=50[ 70 can be cut in]. Mixed servos-a red for 1 ELV* a black for other* also for A/BKS.
EDF run-up had 2 harsh vibration ranges at low, and 7/8 max [done slowly to run-in blades]. A/BKS can be made to open wider with longer push-only arms- and probably need stronger MG servos.A/B return springs are too weak to fully close. Room for 2/3300 4s lipo's in //, if not too heavy. EDF rim o.d. is 74mm to fit alloy DPS 6s, or DPS 4s with a little packing-up tape. Over-all - Inspired to make mods. and, it will make a might fine model.

Hi Graham,
I have worked out how to get the steering working. I have tried uploading pictures to the FILES section to no avail. If you give me your eMail address I will send you my pics of how I did it.

Does it seem really heavy for 70mm EDF? Usually more like 1100-1200g.

Mine weighs 1400g un-assembled without lipo, or mods. With min. lipo 3300 4s 360g= 1760g

Received mine during the week and have largely put it together. The retracts work well once they are properly attached. The wing retracts were not properly glued in so I removed them an reattached the plywood mounts with araldite. Won't fall off now. Took me a little while to sort out the cables for the front steering retract. Should work OK when I get it flying. Biggest disappointment was the ESC. It blew up within about five seconds of the first start up. I have salvalged the BEC (which is separate from the ESC) and will use it on something else. I have ordered one the the Turnigy 70A ESC's and hopefully will have it by next week end.

I pulled out the EDF to get access to the ESC. For something to do, I spun up the EDF using a 3S pack (as I didn't have a 4S ESC lying around). Quite pleasantly, at WOT on 3S, the EDF had no vibration whatsoever. Hopefully this will translate into useage with 4S. Even on 3S, the EDF seemed to have heaps of trust. Can't wait to see what it does on 4S.

So far (not having flown the aircraft), I am quite impressed with this model overall. It builds well, the electrics (ESC aside) are sound and just looks cool. I will do a flight review once I have this bird in the air.

Time for part 2 of my review.

The Mig 15 is completely assembled with the Turnigy 70 ESC to replace the stock unit that failed. Unfortunately the first time I attempted to spin up the stock EDF, the fan blew apart. I was at about 2/3 throttle with a 4S 3000mAh 40C pack when this happened. Obviously the stock EDF was not much better than the stock ESC. I have ordered a Wemotech fan and a HET 2W20 motor from another supplier and should have it next week. All up, the replacement ESC and EDF unit have set me back about $200. This is fast becoming an expensive project. Obviously HK EDF's are not any better than their ESC's. This cost should be considered when purchasing any EDF plane from HK.

On a bright note, I am still otherwise pleased with the jet. The assembly went together well. The plane is structurally strong. All the servos and retracts work well. The camo colour scheme is growing on me too.

My final review of this model will (hopefully) be next weekend when I get to fly the machine. Can't wait for it!

Time for the third and final part of my review of this model........

My Wemotec EDF and HET 2W20 motor combo showed up yesterday and I installed it last night. Spins up nicely with no vibration - even at WOT. I got off work early today so I was able to sneak out to the local club field for a quick test flight.

I set the COG with the bird slightly nose heavy (I read somewhere that this is a good idea with EDF planes). I used a Turnigy 4S 3000mAh 40C pack. This bird takes up a lot of runway to get off the ground - about 40 metres from a standing start. I used flaps to get it off the ground so I imagine it would take longer again without flaps. Once in the air, the Mig 15 climbed nicely and the flight smoothed out once the flaps were raised and the undercarriage was retracted. Once I had the Mig trimmed, she flew very well. Very smooth through turn and no tip-stall tendancies. All the stock servos worked well delivering crisp control of the Mig in flight. With Wemo/HET combo, top speed was quite quick - not ballistic, but certainly entertaining. There was anough power on board to stay aloft even at half throttle. I am still disappointed the stock EDF failed as I would have liked to seen how it performed. Nonetheless, I am extremely pleased with my aftermarket EDF/motor combo.

Last part of my review continued........

I did several landings and takeoffs for practice. One thing I noticed it that not having a prop on the front to slow you down means it is easy to come in pretty hot. I intend to slow the motor a lot earlier in my landing approached with the Mig. Despite the extra speed I was carrying, the Mig landed smoothly and predictably. It did take a lot of runway to stop, however. Basically, if your club doesn't have at least a 40 meter runway,, this might not be the plane for you. The retracts worked flawlessly during a number of cycles of operation.

Having been a helicopter and propeller plane pilot, this was my first flight in an EDF. I felt well in control of the Mig as it is very easy to fly with no nasty flight tendancies. I can see myself having fun with this model for a long time to come.

If you are prepared to update the stock ESC and EDF, this is an excellent first jet. Highly recommended.

Not flown it yet, but in the process of fitting it together the paint rubs off, I wonder if the manufacturer treats the foam with a bonding agent before painting. This a normal practice with lots of other foam models, I would suggest that HK look into this. but on balance the fit of the parts was very good.
