Hobbyking Domin-8-Trix 3D 1200mm (ARF)
Hobbyking Domin-8-Trix 3D 1200mm (ARF)

It has been a long time coming but the Hobbyking Team Itchy Thumbs Domin-8-Trix has been worth the wait, designed with one thing in mind.... hardcore 3D!

The Domin-8-Trix has the highest build quality, offering a combination of strength, ultra lightness and precision as only balsa can. The attractive colour scheme is finished in top quality and expertly applied covering, leaving you to simply apply the decals. The supplied hardware, which is more than up to the job of handling extreme 3D Maneuvers, is first class. The cowl and spats are glassfiber with an excellent deep gloss finish. The Domin-8-Trix is as practical as you would expect and features plug in wings and a large canopy which is secured by a proper latch, this fantastic looking model just screams quality.

This model is a looker for sure but performance is really what the Domin-8-Trix is about, the amazingly light flying weight and large control surfaces combine to give precise control, allowing the 3D pilot to really push the limits and with the right power train, the Domin-8-Trix will have unlimited vertical. This is one Domin-8-Trix that won't punish you or your flying, YOU are in control!

what is the best set up for 3d? or what is a good 3d plane in 40"~47" wing span.
 (Mike) 551 points
I recommend sk3 3536 1050kv and kforce 40a esc with 3s 2200mah 25c, turning 11x6e prop, as for the best 3d plane I quite like the zh yak 55 45.5", it is half price and very good.

Hi What points should be taken into account so that an airplane fly?
 Mar11 2113 points
you should stiffen the back stabilizers both for rudder and elivator

Hi, guys, I'm new to 3d planes, I have 2 questions: 1.In user manual max throws for ailerons are -63mm but with recommended servos (HK-922MG) I can get max -30mm. Is it ok? If not, how to increase it? 2.In user manual C.G. is 99mm behind the leading edge. To get it with my motor (SK3 - 3542-1250kv) I have to move battery too much backward where it can't be fasten securely. What is the best solution in this case? What is the best solution in my case? What if G.C is on 85mm instead of 99mm? Thanks in advance.
 Mar11 2113 points
hi ivan, regarding you aileron throws if this is your 1st 3d plane than 30mm throw is enuf throw, however if you want to go more you can order an extra long servo arm r simply modify one to be long, regarding securing your battery use heavy sticky valcro and double sided one
if cg is on 85mm instead of 99mm than the plane will be soo nose heavy..
have fun

best batt. ive found is the pa 2200 lipo. best moter is the pa thrust 20. runs up to a 13x5 with this plane its best to use an apc slow flyer 13x3.4 too much pitch means too much speed leading to controll fluttter wich will result in a catastrophic crash. try the precision aerobatics quantum .30 speed controller. works best under a heavy load of 3 d flying. wont overheat an shut down. well. thats what i would use and have been for a while now. the others just dont stand up to the demand for me.

Hey Hey! I'd appreciate it if one of the Pros could give me some advice for a good prop and speed controller. I'm planning on installing a SK3536-1400 and running 3s 2200mah lipos. Thanks for your time!

plush 40 amps i a great esc for this plane esp for this motor you are suggesting.. ive got the same one.. plush are bullet proof esc.. i use on other plane a 30 amos one and it doesnt even heat up !

Hi Guys, I need your help. Will the above motor fit between the cowling and the motor mount? I am having doubts since the x mount of this motor is in front or the motor. If not, what is the best motor that can run a 13x8 prop and 3 or 4s Lipo? Thanks. Jim
 shannon 8 points
try a greatplanes electric moter mount box. its made od aluminum and carbon fiber. it will accomodate virtually any electric moter in the size range your looking. and be sure to use cf stiffeners for your tail section. weak design.

hello all, i have been looking at this plane for a while now...i have a few 3d planes (gas, nitro) so i know what im doing i just lost my 330s park flyer and gutted it ...i like the looks of this plane, and the video is slammin... might i expect to get the same performance out of the one i get?
 shannon 8 points
with the propper set up and equipment yes. with low grade generic garbage like hk sells. no. and the structure needs strengthening. particularly in the tail wing. take a look at precision aerobatics website for the best equipment for your hard earned doller. really good advice too. the guy in the video for this plane is a pilot/builder designer for pa. believe me. he went over the domin8trix with a fine tooth comb. then made the video.

I see you are new here and you are entitled to your opinion ut i have been a modler for over 40 years and usually build my own aircraft but this was such a great looking plane i brought one (make that two) It is very difficult to see the balsa grain running the wrong direction in the elevator with that covering also the second unit had the updated steel joiner and the so called carbon spar (more like plastic) and also failed i am just trying to help those that dont have lots of cash from wasting their money oh i have placed 96 HK orders to date so i am not anti HK
dave 330d  7 points - 10/29/2012

To be honest guys, what do you expect for your money, sure the rear is a tad flimsy but if any of you know anything about planes then it don't take much to glue in a round spa end to end of stab and glue down some 1x4 mm carbon flat around the ele halfs, problem fixed, so why you losers trying to get your money back um, if it seems week fix it don't fly it till it breaks, wake up, give H/K a break or just don't buy the plane maybe you people should stick to foamies lol
 liggo 76 101 points
i agree i have this plane apart from the weak tail the rest of the plne is great i just took the covering off the tail and glued some 4mm square carbon fibre in and re covered i was lucky to have a simular colour and this plane still till tis day flys great and on other problems and the other guys at the park love my plane and envy it so if people are going to winge about this plane they dont know what there talking about

when you say tail what do u exactly mean .. i have this plane for around a year now and never put together till date.. cause i read some bad points about it.. may you tell me what upgrades i should do
thanks
 liggo 76 101 points
hi Mar11 the rear stabilize had to much flutter and snapped were it is glued to the fuse so i cut the stab away from the fuse then took the covering off and the i cut the leading and trailing edges out a slot and epoxied in some 4mm square tube then recovered i was lucky to have some covering the same colour then reasembled the plane i can send some pictures if you like as i have the plane fully apart now after a bad landing so i am going to rebuild because there was minimal damage and it it such a great plane too fly
 liggo 76 101 points
yes you could sfactor1 but if you dont do any mods before flight you take the risk and was 1 of the first to find out about the weak tail feathers so i found out the hard way with a broken plane so thats how i fixed mine yes you could mod the way you said but it would not look the way it was meant to so its up to the flyer and personal choice
Jack  16 points - 10/15/2012

I've wanted one of these for a while. After finally purchasing it arrived quickly and well boxed. I opened it and assembled it carefully. I noticed the tail plane felt flimsy and could not see the carbon or steel parts hobby king was talking about as I was assured this flaw was fixed. I sent them an email to confirm I got the revised edition and they confirmed I had. So off I went for my first flight and it seemed to be going well, until the right hand side stabiliser and elevator snapped and started flailing around in the breeze. I landed very roughly resulting In a broken prop and smashed the landing gear mount into the body. Beyond repair. And guess what? There is no carbon or steel joiner any where in the rear tail plane. What a joke. I have opened a complaint so we will see what they do... Otherwise steer clear of this plane.
 Jack 16 points
Hobby king told me there policy was that once you open the box it's your problem. Even if what they supplied you isn't what you ordered...

Jack keep at them you deserve to be refunded like some others have this is a bad model and should be taken off the market

this is not a bad plane just some poor design faults it cant be that bad if you have brought 2 and if you have been around in the hobby for 40 years dont knock the plane just give the people the advice to rectify the problems sorry nothing against you just other people that have not been in the hobby as long do need some advice
 shannon 8 points
right on! not a bad model. it takes experience to fly and an experienced modelers eye to point out the structural flaws and fix them. lazy pilots dont buy it. go back to foameys. leave the grown up stuff to the experienced modelers like ourselves.

I think the time when the Price changed .... See it has increased from what you might have bought
 LarrySee 91 points
Strengthen the empennage, h-stab and elevator will help but not cure destructive flutter. What is needed is a balanced or over balanced elevator. By putting weight into (or onto) the "balance" area, forward of the hinge line can stop the flutter. I put 5 grams into each of these areas (the foot of the "L" outboard elevator) stopped the flutter entirely with my Money Shot. Not a problem in more than a dozen flights.
 unleaded 165 points
Larry i think you are right i just had my second model (the upgraded version) fail on second flight while flying level the elevator failed at same place and model went in vertical destroyed now in bin very very pissed off I am rebuilding the first one and going to put an unbalanced elevator on it will let you know how it goes

 RBOLETTO 84 points
Boa sorte!

ive just brought this plane and it is so touchy and nearly uncontrollable its not funny so is the center of gravity 99mm right as it says on the manual or is it in a different spot
 cardboard_boks 115 points
I had my first flight the other day and started out at 99mm and felt it was to tail heavy. I moved my 2200 nanotech about in inch forwards and it's balanced great now. Id say about the 90mm range. Do you have your high/low rates set?? Once I'm in the air and chuck on high rates it does becomes allot more responsive, defiantly use low rates for take-off/landing. Also chuck in a handful of expo if you already haven't.
 Jonathan 1 points
yea ive got rates and ive got 100%expo on ailerons and elavotor and still uncontrollable and my cg is fwd already from 99mm and even on low rates its shocking idk what to do
 cardboard_boks 115 points
I have expo set at 40% all round works for me. What throws do you have on all the control surfaces? My servo horns are to small to give the full range stated in the manual, except rudder. For ailerons I have about 50mm up and down. For rudder I have 105mm left and right. And for Elevator I have 50mm up and down. My low rates are set at 50% which makes the aircraft fell like any other sport plane. The only other thing I can think about is you experiencing some radio problems during flight making the controls erratic.
 Jonathan 1 points
ive only got about 30mm on alerons 105mm on rudder and ive got about 50mm for evevator which is pretty much the same as your set up what radio gear r u useing does yours feel like its gonna stall on lading mine does
 Jonathan 1 points
hahahah my grandad found out y it was so touchy i had the expo the wrong way beacuse its a new radio
 cardboard_boks 115 points
Ahh 100% expo the wrong way will make things really touchy. I must commend you on not crashing it yet and happy flying
 RBOLETTO 84 points
Hey my friend, you will find the right CG in every plane on the first 1/3 from the leading edge! Use negative exponential for your plane, ailerons -70%, rudder -60% and elev -50% or -60%. Best regards!

 VimanChalak 71 points
Hi mar11 this has the same problem as the Red Color 540 Edge V3 (PRODUCT ID: 049000002). please look at the pictures under the files section that i have put and the instructions in the discussion thread for that plane. here is the www.link
 Mar11 2113 points
Link not shown.. Tell me what I should do please ? Thanks
 VimanChalak 71 points
please look for PRODUCT ID: 049000002 and check out the files section which shows the picture. All you need is a 3MM CF flat rod. make a channel along the elevator and the Horizontal stab then stick the CF rod in that channel. make sure the CF rod is placed perpendiculat to the ground. let me know if you still have questions

There appear to be major design flaws with this models tail plane and elevator construction. Beware adding any more power as there obviously needs to be serious strengthening of the tail feathers before even flying it out of the box.

where is the CG in this plane ?!
 duck now!! 1 points
"as a rule of thumb"I find cg to be just slightly behind the tickets part of the main wing along side of fuselage or roughly1/3 the distance of the wing from leading edge to trailing edge this works well for me on all my models low wing configurations are sometimes easier to balance for cg inverted or upside down especially when using a cg machine, hope this helps you out!!!!
 Mar11 2113 points
What's a Ch machine ? Where can I buy ot from ?

HK don't offer one that I can find and they won't let me give you a competitors web address guess I'm not going to be one of their favorite customers,I'm evidently a dinosaur to them I still twist off and build one from scratch once in awhile try tower hobbies

user manual that i got with plane, says CG is 99mm (3,91 in.) from leading edge.

Ok this is where trial and error comes into play ,I know not all manuals give the right cg measurement for instance my HK B17 the manual said 13/4 to 21/4 but I found it at 41/2 it changes depending on what you set the plane up with ,motor, esc, props and electronic placement, and battery location.

I need recommendation for Domin8trix, from this 3 servos. Hitec HS-82MG, Hitec HS-65HB and Hitec HS-81. On specs, there is only this "4 x 9g~12g Digital Servo".

I wouldn't recomend any hitec servo after having them fail and destroy my mx2 , hobby king have Way better servo's for half the price .

Very nice plane. Received it today, Finish is superb and it seems very well built. This is a rather big plane and the 35 motor size recommended seems too small for me. There is also only 55 mm space for motor, measured from base of motor mount to cowling front end. So I will use an EMP 4240/890kV motor which delivers some 550W and can be used for 3 to 7S lipos. Will use 50 A ESC. Prop for this motor is 13 x 6 to 14 x 8. The motor fits very well - see pictures I have uploaded in the file section. There is plenty of length on the battery platform so the battery can easily be positioned for correct CG. Servo mounts is about 20 mm long -I will install HK metal gear servos 929MG. Landing gear is weak so I will change to carbon fiber. Hope to have it ready in about a week and will let you know how it flies

Personally, I love the name and colour. Let me say, this was an awesome build! 5 Stars!! I think it looks great. I used 3526 turnigy 1100 with 10-6 prop.I am interested in mostly sport, with a little 3D. I have 2200 20C and 25C-35C lipo's. (Tons of battery room) I used one HK939mg servo for elevator and it dropped right in the hole. I have 3 turnigy TG9e and they are a little fat. (12mm i think and room for 11mm). Shaved the holes and they fit well! Pull-pull system is ok. I am sure some of you can improve on it.(when you cut out the opening for the wire, there is a guide tube. I removed mine by mistake) I will maiden flight next week, weather permitting. 2 Thumbs up HobbyKing for such a good product! (I will probably by a second plane)

My buddy maiden the plane for me the other daa. Luckily I didn't fly it. He is an excellent pilot and shortly after take off the rear wing broke, the right part just folded upward. It was not due to poor assembly, the wing broke at it's root just slightly outside the joint. See pictures in the file section. Luckily my buddy managed to land the plane without any further damage. See www.link reinforced the rear wing with a carbon fiber rod and flew it today. Flew very nice indeed. I only used 3 S battery which is plenty for my large motor - see my earlier review. In spite of the broken rear wing - it is indeed a very nice plane and easy to fly.
