Darkwing FPV Drone 1727mm Composite (ARF)

Darkwing FPV Drone 1727mm Composite (ARF)
Darkwing FPV Drone 1727mm Composite (ARF)

The H-King Darkwing is a huge composite flying wing designed specifically for FPV, with it's sleek design and menacing lines, this is one fantastic looking model!

The central fuselage section and winglets are made from sturdy fiberglass, while the wing is sheeted, traditional construction balsa for durability. Despite it's size, the Darkwing is practical with both wings being plug in, this model can be field assembled in minutes and is easy to transport. Being a delta, it is of course a simple 2 servo affair, there is a massive amount of space in under the large canopy for Lipoly's and FPV equipment, the motor mount is also very substantial, obviously motor choice will depend on payload. The Darkwing has no undercarriage and will require a launch ramp, alternatively, conversion to fixed or even retracting undercarriage will be reasonably simple for the experienced modeller.

The Darkwing will undoubtedly make for a fantastic sport flying model courtesy of it's efficient and sleek aerodynamic design, but at it's heart, this is a futuristic looking FPV platform that features a high payload capability and has excellent stall & glide characteristics. The sheer size and menacing lines of the Darkwing will cause jaws to drop wherever you fly, this is one radical looking model that is perfect for the high tech world of FPV.

Features:
Amazing high tech look
Tough glassfiber fuselage
Massive payload capability
Easy and fast field assembly
Plug in wings for easy transportation
Low build cost

now if it was made out of Carbon fiber that would be cool!

With all these that we hear you still name this plane a "Drone"....
 Pumpkinheaddelux 127 points
I call all my FPV aircraft "Drones". It just sounds better and if I refer to it as a FPV platform or UAV a lot of people have no idea what I'm talking about. When I say I like to build "Drones" or my hobby, they know what I am talking about!
 MoRaLeSD 9 points
Those that know what FPV is, those that not they get it wrong.
 Sawdust 1632 points
That's why he calls his "Drones". What's your point Moralesd?
 MoRaLeSD 9 points
What I try to say is that with this new law against "drones" people might see them aggressively. It's better to say I fly RC Planes FPV and maybe explain what FPV is, rather drones. They get scared of drones, not RC Planes :). Friendly, Dimitris.
 Pumpkinheaddelux 127 points
Well, This "Dark wing" ARF is a bit scary looking! Alot of people ask if I could make one to stalk people. I tell them, HECK YEAH! I can build you a VTOL "DRONE" to land in an area hang out for a few hours to observe a subjects activities with out being noticed lol! But I do remind them that it's illegal.
 crazycarmaniac 186 points
i would want you to build a VTOL harreir itd look heaps good
 squidyman 59 points
It is "sort of" illegal. If you are not flying over private property then you are fine.(I still fly over private property) but what is stopping them from taking out there 12 gauge and taking care of the problem. I am working on a sound mufler
 crazycarmaniac 186 points
unless u do night flight! it wont be shot down. just cos its black, ps if they bring out a white wing , then thats just racsist
FRANC0IS  42 points - 3/4/2013

How much payload does HK consider "massive payload capability"
Airibatic  49 points - 2/24/2013

There are some great video's on youtube on how not to launch it.
Aaron  2 points - 1/29/2013

I am curious to know how do you launch this thing...I see videos on YT but those guys have not figured it out either. Also you use it for FPV...where is the camera mounted...and will all the electronics fit in the bay...HK needs to do a video and explain the proper FPV and sport flying use of this wing.
 H-KING_SCOTT 5219 points
All part of modeling! There is a large upper hatch with plenty of space for Lipo's, FPV, etc, as far as launching is concerned, bungee would be the simplest solution (using a ramp)>
 canso 174 points
I wondered the same thing about where to grab it and launch. So I dug up some information on the web regarding target drones and voila, there are numerous pictures etc. about their launchers. I figure a couple of pieces of 2*4, pipe etc. and you can make a good mobile launcher.
Luisa  2 points - 1/28/2013

Already bought mine and I hope his arrival. Meanwhile, I am undecided whether install an EDF 90MM or outrunner 590Kv. It has space in the rear section for EDF? Please ask them to help me decide. thanks
 FRANC0IS 42 points
The mount on the back is made for a out runner with prop. You could probably rig up something for a EDF on top in the back but it wouldn't look right with this aerodynamic beauty
MarcusRjCharita  425 points - 1/15/2013

Dear HK guys and or owners, Can u please explain us how is the wing fixed to the body for flying? After wings are mounted, can they be removable easily or are they glued or fixed w screws not intended to be unmounted after every flying session? Cheers!
Ian Rice  12 points - 1/2/2013

Hello guys! Anyone build this plane up for speed? How will it handle speeds of 140 - 150 mph? My set up is going to be pushing 5000 watts and turning an 11x7 3 blade at the speed of sound. I want to know if the wings will need carbon fiber! I'm thinking I may need to cover them with carbon fiber tissue!
 Ian Rice 12 points
Got my arf today. Whats up with the canopy!!! Hobby King needs to put some framing in there. My Kits canopy was squashed flat as a pancake!!! Well Here we go again. This is definitely not going to be a smash together model. I want this to be a fast model!! But as it looks coming out of the box, i will need to rebuild almost everything. Else have it fly apart in the air. Give me a few months of work and i'll let you guys know what i find in the build. As i will be mounting retracts and pushing 5000Watts, Aprox 7000-9000 grams of thrust. I can see a few week points already. And i haven't pulled the coverings on the wings to see whats there to build up on. This plane is written up as being a FPV platform or fast pusher. As it looks coming out of the box, it needs a lot of work before it will be safe to pull any high speed G's.
 FRANC0IS 42 points
With 7-9kilograms of thrust you will need carbon reinforcement. And we will need a video of a high speed low pass
Bennyt19  26 points - 12/19/2012

Looks great but almost 6 muinutes of looking at a black pin point on a screen with a couple of low passes? next time could you please use the zoom and get some tighter shots of the plane? Thanks
b0ltn  1 points - 12/11/2012

Hey guys, Can anyone recommend a suitable outrunner motor for high performance with a full FPV payload, Thanks
charles  2 points - 12/3/2012

There are Youtube video's of this plane used as a Soar plane off the coastal cliffs.
charles  2 points - 12/3/2012

Can you carbon fiber over the monocote wings?
 Joseph 51 points
Actual carbon fiber or a vinyl wrap? The latter would be easier because of the odd shape of the wing.
Mark  4 points - 11/10/2012

Can anyone tell me where the CG is for this plane? Mine is finished but I don't want to try to fly it Without the proper CG Thanks
 Clemens 1 points
I fly it with one third to halve of the wing depth (est. 18 cm behind the wing nose).

Can anyone tell me the approximate dimensions of the package? Thanks in advance

slope anyone?
Aleuli  35 points - 4/4/2012

I have mine. All I can say is I want a bigger one(2-2.5mts wingspan) and retracts already. This one is lighter than my Maxi swift with covering added.
 R/CNewbie 3816 points
Lighter?!! But isn't the maxi swift made of EPP?
 beezlebub 231 points
epp is pretty heavy. balsa built up tends to be much lighter.
 Aleuli 35 points
My Maxi swift has a 3M90 coating and covering film bought here, with all FPV stuff and 4X 3s5000mAh (15C) it weights 3.3Kg. I am not sure yet if the darkwing is really lighter, the truth is that it was just an estimate. It seemed to be lighter than the Maxi without batteries.
Aleuli  35 points - 3/23/2012

Does anybody have a successful flying video of this? There is three on youtube, but all are failed attempts from the same guy.
 Aleuli 35 points
****
 fredo21 41 points
There are now successful youtube videos from the same group who tow it up behind another model. Seems to fly great.

That's an awesome wing.. Nice Job! PS: Check out all the chem-trails in this video.. I counted 8.

that's me and my plane, it was hard to launch it but the result was more than great. thank you for setting this link on HK
 philip 1 points
can you share what motor and any extra weight you had on board for that flight it is really nice and i bought one for fpv lae enforcement and would like some tips on weight i have some ideas on small kenbards and addon winglets to make it more stable does this sound neccesary to you for the wing set up as it flew for you? please advise thanks

What kind of prop to use with the NTM Prop Drive Series 42-48 650KV / 1295W setup?
 tonioaltea 713 points
TRSP-15x10
 danny 43 points
15x10 is ok but only with a 3s battery. if you like the use a 4s you need a 9x6
Scott  236 points - 3/10/2012

How about stocking something like the X-8 2m "foamy" Hobbyking? Hobbyking would sell alot of units I am sure!
 danny 43 points
the darkwing is much better then the x8. you can used it for fpv and for highspeed stunt also
Michael  29 points - 3/5/2012

will it come to Europe? please :)
Flash  4 points - 3/5/2012

4s is not to light with FPV system ?
 jakou31 153 points
you can use 5s or 6s 3300mah for most powerful

Hi hobbyking please make epo big fpv lake the x8 or bigger the composite and wood version is scary to crash ,just make lest expensive epo version so if crash we just ci or gorillaglue and go .
Andrew  60 points - 2/26/2012

Andrew, Has anyone tried this beast as a slope sorer? Looks like it should go well
calone76  29 points - 2/25/2012

I'm thinking to buy this for FPV. It's a cool looking airplane. A 3 wheels landing gear is a MUST. Don't think to hand launch this one. With electronics will be more than 3kg.
Alberto  4 points - 2/25/2012

Could somebody refer me to a manual for working with composite? I would like to know how to cut it for adding motor and servo gears.
 darius59 29 points
Dremel cut of wheel
 Alberto 4 points
after cutting, how to finish?
 wynocha 1390 points
That's easy just buy some stuff from warbirds lake p-47 look on parts list horizonhobby and just buy the part and finish the cut I think the call whiles wells
flemming  17 points - 2/23/2012

plz put out 1 video on it

Anyone know the height of this plane? They say the wing span and length but not the height
 flatbattery 23 points
Winglet Height 155mm Body height 135 - 140 hard to get a fix on it in black :)
boostoman  316 points - 2/21/2012

since this is such i big plane. why doesnt it come with landing gear? i think it would be very hard to hand launch a 1.7m plane.
 Sam G 2 points
I agree It should come with landing gear (retractable) caus that stuff is cool on rc
 calone76 29 points
Hand launch a 1.7m with rear propeller... hmmm... sounds like a cutted hand. With some work inside (glue&ply) I think it's easy to mount a 3 wheel landing gear.
vettster  219 points - 2/17/2012

Screw the FPV part....That is a cool looking plane all on its own:)
 majik01 2891 points
Yes it is cool. However, when I tried flying an all black plane once, it was very hard to get orientation correctly - something about the absolute black against the sky/clouds. It was a weird flying experience.
 tonioaltea 713 points
If you want to fly well you know that there must be at least in the belly of a white band on each wing of at least 15 cm thick, otherwise you will never understand if it is right or wrong side
Polycapman  56 points - 2/16/2012

It look like captured US drone, Only its black :)
 torque roll 114 points
The US doesn't have anything that pretty : )
 Ivan Nikolaevich 18 points
Very interestning drone ))). But so heavy...
 majik01 2891 points
Are there really drones that look like this? I have not seen any yet.

This Darkwing flies really well, it is really stable and the speed was ok. I used 4cell 5000mah with motor 950kw and a 12/6 prop. However the color black isn’t my first choice for this airplane, in a distance it gets difficult to see so I crashed mine. Good airplanes just don’t fly long way from the starting point. Now I ordered the new x8 (white)

For the only person that I actually have seen fling this plane, It is a pain to take off the ground! if you don't have a body" to tow your plane, The expenses of making a launch ramp have to be added to this model! but may be the mos annoying thing is the the cockpit cover, It is hard to keep it from falling down out of the plane and the fact that is not clear make at least for me a very hard decision to put the money on to it! I hope that they make the proper adjustments! like the option ready, of landing gear. Because there are lots of people like me that constantly are looking for a better platform for our UAV's, and all those styrofoam planes eventually wear out! living use with almost nothing! Hey I have an X8 from sky walker! and if your don't take the time to cover it either on fiberglass or in some kind of Vinyl tape! your will have a pile of garbage on not time! so please HB keep in mind people like us!
