Nothing looks as good in the air as a bi-plane and the Ultimate 40 is no exception! Constructed from Ply and balsa wood this is a model you can be proud to show off in the pits. The Ultimate 40 is finished in a simple yet elegant color scheme using quality covering film and a perfectly color matched fiber glass cowl.
The Ultimate 40 comes with an engine mount for a .40 size two Stroke or .50 size 4 stroke glow engine and a motor mount for a 42XX size Brushless motor making setup for EP or a glow engine easy. A 260cc fuel tank and all the general hardware (push rods, horns, screws etc) are included to get your model underway. The Ultimate 40 also features molded fiber glass wheel spats, a solid 1 piece aluminum landing gear and steerable tail wheel.
Yes you can and mount them on the outside of the fuslog but I used wire for elev half's {_} then used 1 servo to keep weight down. For the instructions are very poor. The cd that came with mine was for the older airplane. It uses 2 aliron servos and it shows 1. If you have not built a few kits this is not the kit for you but other than building changes the plane looks good and well built and the covering is very good.
I just got my Ultimate bi-plane and it is really nice, the instructions are old putting it toether, and I need to know what servo is a standard for HK. If anyone has a servo that fits this plane please let me know?
I've had good experiences with the HX5010's, and now they're in us warehouse (finally!)for 5 bucks each. They center well and I've yet to strip one in my 40 sized planes, but like all HK electronics, burn them in on a tester for a while before bolting them into your plane.
Thank you for the reply, but that servo will not fit the Ultimate 40 bi-plane, the servo really looks good but it is a standard servo in length and width for the US. I have a lot of those, but nothing will fit. I know I can cut the servo tray out, but I take a good of destroying the plane. HK must have a different standard for their length and width for the servos. The opening appears to be 5/8" by 1 1/4"
If you are planning to make this bi-plane an electric airplane, forget it. There is no place to put the battery. No way to make a hatch without destroying the looks of the airplane. The wing will take about a half hour to take off and put it back on. To take this wing off so you could put a new battery in where the gas tank is. You must first take off the landing gear and remove the 8 screws on each side of the top wing support. The next step is to take off the wing nuts amd slide the wings forward over the engine. As you can see, it would be very difficult to make this an electric airplane. I had to cut the servo trays that is pictured on the last example on this page. I found that I was able to go back 1/4" and cut straight across from both servos hole and was able to install standard servos. The instructions don't tell you that there are holes for servos in the tail section of the plane. But, if you use those holes it will be extremely tail heavy with either electric or gas. That is why I used the servo trays that are forward and I used an OS 46 engine. It balanced out almost perfect. I had to add 1 ounce to the back end of the plane. I have not flowen the plane yet, but it looks good. Just one more tip if any one is going to buy this plane, there is no holes in the top wing to mount the wing support. You must drill your own. I hope this helps you. It is a good looking plane. GOOD LUCK
This plane is set up for "Mini" servos ( don't confuse Mini with Micro servos ). Standard size servos require that you modify the plane as previously indicated.... however standard or high torque "Mini" servos are more than sufficient. I used standard Mini's for the tail, and a high torque mini for the aileron. One servo drives all four ailerons.
The lower wing is it deep enough for a 9G servo to mount in.

Overall, I like plane. It came undamaged and nicely packed. The instructions are useless however. The instructions that come with the plane appear to be for a previous model, which causes confusion during assembly. You will have to figure out a majority of the assembly yourself. The servos are mini, not standard size. I would not recommed this model to a new builder. Other than that, its a good model. Balances well, and flys great. I am flying with an OS la40 glow engine.
