The Spad XIII was the final and ultimate version of the pretty French Fighter and featured a host of much needed aerodynamic and armament improvements over earlier versions which were outclassed by German fighters within 12 months of being supplied to French squadrons, the improvements were reccomended and pushed forward by the leading French Ace Georges Guynemer, the result being one of the classic fighters of WW1.
This EPO Spad is simply stunning both in terms of looks and scale detail, radiators, exhaust pipes, machine guns and so on are all faithfully reproduced and all the struts & cabanes feature loops for those wanting to add authentic rigging wire. Being Plug and fly, there is little to do in terms of building with the powerful motor, ESC & servo's pre-fitted and the high quality waterslide Decals have also been expertly pre-applied.
Flight performance from the superb bi-plane is 1st class, flight controls are responsive at all speeds and the model has a wide flight envelope, it is capable of realistic slow flight and scale aerobatics, it will also tolerate a little wind making it a very practical model to own. Through it's extensive flight testing, we also found the model to be very robust, when you put it all together, this superbly finished Spad has quality, looks, reliability & performance, it is a must for the collection of any scale or warbird enthusiast!
Just received my Spad in TN and began build today. Can someone please post a pic of how and where the big blue ESC brick that came with the kitnis supposed to fit?? Where does this thig go?
You will first put your receiver in the base of the plane the orange receiver fits well in the body cavity. The ESC really floats on top of the receiver. Again push the receiver down into the body, A foam cut over this and the the ESC the wing will hold it in and the battery is but into the bottom of the plane.
This is a fantastic flying little model. I really enjoy flying this plane. all that being said Please HK come out with some alloy replacements for the landing gear and Struts/ Cabines. I love to fly it but hate making Balsa replacements
I took the landing stuts and traced them onto a soft plastic sheet cut the outline out and hot glued the cut out of a soda can outline onto the plastic cutout, and this is working well and the weight is slightly heavy and it does nose over. But the plane is landing is on grass or snow.

Does anyong know what the ESC battery connection it comes with, does the ESC need a battery with JST, XT-60 or what other type. Tired of soldering, just want to buy the right battery that comes with the same connections type as the ESC on this plane. Thanks, will issue credit to answer.
I just looked at manuel in the files section, it states that it requires a 1000mah 7.4V (2S) battery and it shows a picture of the ESC which has JST connectors. BUT, in the required section is states a 3S (11.4 volt) battery at 800 mah. I don't believe the 20amp ESC can handle 3S (11.4 volt). If you own this plane please let me know if the ESC has a JST connector on it for the battery connection and if 2S is required rather then a 3S as stated in the description section. Thanks, I will issue credit for answer.
I tore the original landing gear off in a crash and had to make new landing gear with Aluminum oval tubing and carbon fiber. It's much stronger than the flimsy plastic the plane came with.
Instructions anyone...HK...anyone?? I mean I know it's pretty simple to get these things together, but all those little silly things like CG and starting throws, that would be great to know!! Also, with the struts and all this is a bit more detailed than a normal toss-together foamie. So, yes, a simple instruction manual would help heaps here gents...and there be None in the box
Oh and said struts seem to be, in your pics since there is no manual, held together with a bunch of tiny lil screws...are those supposed to be included in the kit because there are none in mine?! Looks as if the landing gear is held on with them as well?? No screws here.
Oh well, thank god for RCG and bottles of extra hardware laying around. Nice looking bird HK, but really, include a lil detail on the strut placement, and hardware guys.
I just got mine today. there was a small bag of screws driver, epoxy, prop, struts, wing hold-down screw, a small open end wrench but, NO MANUAL. Pkging was good altho the horizontal stab was bowed up approx. 1/4 inch at one end.
Msgt, if you take a look on the international warehouse listing page for this, and look in the files section, viola you'll find a copy of the manual :)
Least you got your screws with yours, happy holidays!!
Thanks for the headsup Bazz.I never thot 2 look there. The info was pretty sp****. I already had it together by guess and am just waiting on a day in which I can maiden it. Thanks!!
Got the Spad ready to go,,attempted to check control surfaces, motor direction and amp draw only to find that the ESC was history. The motor made about 3/4 of a revolution and NADA! I replaced the 2*10 amp Hobby King ESC with a 12 amp Turnigy Plush and the motor pulls abt 11 amps. with the supplied prop and appears to have a lot of pull. In the middle of all of that, I heard something hit the table only to find 1 of the motor grub screws laying there. I had to cut the front of the cowl off to replace the screw. WOW!! Just 1 thing after another.
After having all the trouble getting the Spad ready to fly, the maiden flight was really good. It had plenty of power with the stock set-up. Rolls were a little slow but, more travel will fix that. I don't see a spare parts listing. Is there one??
to get the instructions go into the warbirds select the spad that is for world wide shipping not the USwherehous go down to the discussions at bottom of page and click on files its in there i just down loaded it yesterday becuse mine also came without any instructions hope this helps
I got the Spad a couple of weeks ago,and the only issue I had,was one landing gear strut was broken.I glued it back together and it was fine. The plane flies well with all rates turned down to 65%,but doesn't land well on grass.(broke both sides of the gear on that one and the prop).I replaced the prop with one of the spares that came with my Catalina, and it works fine even though it's an 8in prop, not the 7in that came with it.I glued the landing gear struts back together and used my Dremel to cut a groove in the V shaped strut.I bent a piece of steel wire to fit in the V groove, and epoxied it in place.I then hit it with a little almond colored spray paint to hide the wire and it looks good as new,and it should be 10 times stronger.Overall,I really like this plane, and I will be out flying it later.
I was interested in getting the plane, what type of battery connection does it come with, does the ESC on this plane come with JST, XT-60 or something else. I ask because tired of soldering, just want to buy the right battery type along with plane.
I love my Spad, its one of the most well built planes on hobbyking. Absolutely no glue for the vital parts, everything is held together with screws and the plane is tough as nails (you can see the screws holding the wing, there are over 12 screws on each side, a pain in the neck to put together, but final product is amazing. Maiden flight was amazing. Without any expo I tried flying it, big mistake, lots of power and on maiden flight it went straight up like a 3d plane from takeoff, wow. The only con is that its a bit heavy in the front, so heavy that no amount of weight in the tail will even it out and therefore it does not glide like the pitt or moth in the air, it has to be driven at half throttle or higher at all times with a little up elevator trim to keep it smooth, and landings are a nightmare, the front is so heavy you have to land hot and fast with lots of room, and the achilles heel for landing is the landing struts, the plane is so heavy they will break on you everytime (mine is reinforced). Great plane, i absolutely love it, will buy another before they go out of stock in the U.S. for the eventual crash that will come (no spare parts, again I repeat no spare parts in any hobbyking warehouse).

I LOVE THE LOOKS, BUT NO SPACE TO PUT THE BATTERY AND THE RECEIVER, SO I HAD TO PUT THE RECEIVER ON THE PILOT'S SEAT, AND VERY TAIL HEAVY, SO I HAD TO PUT LIKE 60 GRAMS ON THE FRONT. THE QUALITY ON THE FINISH AND LOOKS IS GREAT, BUT THE MOTOR MOUNT IS LOW QUALITY AND IT KEEPS LOOSING, I HAD TO PUT SILICONE TO KEEP IT IN PLACE, I GUESS THE VIBRATIONS IS THE CULPRIT ON THAT.

A very rugged little plane. The build is quite straight forward with no surprises. All the tiny little screws for the cabanes are a bit tedious, but once done, they make the wings stiff and solid. Had some trouble finding the right touch-up paint color, but I found a Delta brand Creamcoat acrylic in Antique White that is a near match. Painted the prop and cabanes a wood color, and that added a lot to the scale look. Scott commented that the plane did not need the rigging to make the wings solid and he was right, but I decided to add them for scale sake. A warning that this is a very tedious process, or at least it was for me. I had some silver wire and some black elastic thread. I decided on the black thread as it looked much better and stretched nicely between the cabanes. But I did use the silver wire as a "threader" in order to get the elastic through the tiny holes. It was worth the trouble, and it really adds to the looks of the model. The only drawback to this model is that once assembled, you can no longer access the electronics, as the wing is fixed and would have to be removed (all those tiny screws again) to get to the servos, ESC, and RX. So make certain all is working, servos centered, and wires tucked neatly away so as not to interfere with the installation of the battery. I fit a 950mah Nanotech in the battery compartment with no trouble or alteration needed.

Ok...start with this. It's an absolutely beautiful model. Just finished putting this together and I KNOW I will NEVER fly it. This did not come with a manual at all...or even a picture. I was referring to the pictures on this site to see where the struts went. My esc says 2x10 on it and has a yellow connection (XT-60). The battery compartment is too small for any 3s battery I've got Somebody else wrote up here that they think it's a 2s plane, and without modification. My esc errors when I plug a 3s into it...I'm guessing it must be 2s...but again...its' unlikely I'll ever find out. This is likely to be something I'll trade to a buddy of mine I'm rating this 4 stars 100pcnt on the quality of the materials and how pretty it is. I don't think it's ever going to be a flyer...at least not in my squadron. Would I recommend to somebody...probably not. Would I buy again...No. Am I "ok" with it...yeah...I am. It just looks that good.
