Most of the time. The issue is not setting the endpoints, although I haven't. 1 minute it works as expected. 1 minute later it only works from 0-10%. Above 10% it is still only 10% of the speed. Between working and not working I do not cycle the power. So I assume whatever setting I'm using stay the same. Maybe it's the motor? Please help!
 Steve 7 points
I don't see my Title above: ONLY RUNS SLOW
 jsrock3 138 points
Mine does the exact same thing* 10% or doesn't run at all. I have used many ESCs and honestly this is the worst I have had yet. Would recommend the hobbyking 25-30amp or turnigy plush from my experience. Hope this helps.

It's not the motor. The ESC is defective from the moment I plugged it in. How do I take it back? Is it a hassle? I would like a new one. Anyone have experience with returns? Last time I tried sending a video it was a complete failure.
 jsrock3 138 points
I am in the process of attempting a return or getting a partial refund for a damaged item. Ill keep you posted, so far my request is processing.

I flashed successfully this ESC with SimonK firmware. More details you could find on my blog (link in youtube description).
Thomas  1 points - 4/22/2013

I have to say i'm sorry! I never had to connect external Power through a 5V Powersource during the Flashing of many ESC, but with this ESC i had to connect external Powersupply with 5V and 1A to get the flash done. So ignore my other Post!
Thomas  1 points - 4/22/2013

Some rows down somebody wrote that these ESC can be flashed with "special" Firmware. I tried like i always flash my ESC and i can't get this ESC flashed. Somewhere i read that this ESC is some kind of "locked" so nobody can flash alternative Firmware on to HK-SS18A ESC. So is it possoble that i got a batch of this new kind of ESC?? I bought these ESC because i wan't to flash them! I never ordered this kind of ESC if i had known this information before! Me sad now!
 waterlogged 2587 points
They used to be extremely popular for flashing but You are right. It appears a lock has been put on them to stop reflashing. It could be that too many people were making mistakes and returning them under warranty. Obviously if you reflash them you lose warranty. I did see a list of ESCs which could be reflashed but then you have to watch out for certain batch numbers too. I honestly can't recall where I saw the list but I'd say it was on RC GRoups. They have good advice for quad builders.

Ricky, i tried that but it did not change anything
lucamoharram  6 points - 4/8/2013

does anyone know whats happening? It doesant make the normal start up beeps and the throttle just cuts.
 fabman 22 points
It seems to just enter programming mode randomly
lucamoharram  6 points - 4/8/2013

what is BRAKE with an esc? what does it do?
 fabman 22 points
sorry should have thought of google first!

Anyone knows if this works with Hobbyking i86L Multi-Rotor Control Board (Lite Edition)?
 waterlogged 2587 points
Yes it certainly does and works well too. Just make sure your motors aren't dragging more than about 13 amps.

Nyana
Forget about it bro ! I got it figured out myself.Don't need any help.
SAMUEL  1 points - 3/27/2013

Nyana,
I tried flashing this with TP8KHZ and when I tried to calibrate the throttle range the motor will only give a single beep instead of 3 and the flashing says succesful. What do you think went wrong? All suggestions are welcome. Thanks

where do i connect brushless motor wires- black, red and yellow to this esc? (all the wires are black in this esc)???
 jsrock3 138 points
It doesn't matter. Plug the three colored motor wires into the three black wires on esc. If the rotation is the wrong direction just switch two of the wires and the rotation will change. It's that easy.

Is there brake in programing functions?
 Mike 4 points
you can always buy a programming card and set a brake
 dustin 15 points
There is a brake function. Dont "need" a card to do it. turn on rx. move throttle stick to full, power up plane, it will beep, wait for the 3 consecutive beeps(beep-beep-beep) then move throttle to 0. wait for 2 more beeps and you are done. in files tab under the item there is a simple manual.
Sam  1 points - 2/22/2013

does this come with bullet connectors pre attatched
 k.smith459 52 points
no it does not.. you will have to solder on your own and you will also need to add your own Battery Connector
jsrock3  138 points - 2/12/2013

what if I use a 4 cell 1000mah 14.8v zippy 25c lipo with this esc, will it work or fry?
 Al BigAl 21 points
It will not work. He does not turn on. If you can turn on, it quickly burned.
 k.smith459 52 points
This ESC Will Fry all of the FET's on 4S the Voltage is simply to high

Is your throttle trim set all the way down when you plug in the battery? Sometimes it needs the throttle trim to be set all the way down to arm.
 Al BigAl 21 points
Yes, when you turn on the battery, the throttle should be at the bottom.
 guppy guy 5 points
Yes, the throttle is down. I took this esc out and put in a 30 amp esc and everything worked fine.
guppy guy  5 points - 1/30/2013

I bought 3 of these. None will bind to my dsm2 reciever. No beeps, no bind. Reciever light comes on then dims to nothing. Put my 30 amp in to check the setup. It works fine. Anyone have an idea, is this one different than the larger or do I have 3 doa's ???
Matias Enrique  4 points - 1/7/2013

si puedes utilizarlo. has a prueba de utilizarlo 5 minutos y comprueba la temperatura del jack. si esta muy caliente deves cambiarlo

Can I use a 2000 mah Ni CD battery on this with tamiya jack? The battery has constant discharge of 25 to 35 amps. Is that ok? Can i use battery adapter tamiya male to ec3 female to get it to work? Thanks
 dbatey 11 points
You need to determine how many amps your motor-prop and number of NiCd cells combination is going to draw first to answer your question. Try ecalc**** or post the motor, prop and # of Nicd cells here for an answer.
Jacques  5 points - 12/23/2012

Mine burned without any prop on the motor !!! My battery is a lipo 2s 450mAh, the motor is a turnigy (19gr) ... Don't buy this ESC !
tommy2toes  2088 points - 12/4/2012

no you can not. the motor you want to use runs max 32amps so you will want to run a 35amp esc so that you dont smoke it! feel free to give credit to answers that help you, thanks ,tommy

rarly the motor can reverse polarity but i doubt that happened though it did to us it is very rare. it could be a bad batch tell customer service take pictures weigh your package and they will replace them if they are bad. hope that helps a little even wish i could do more. tommy

Not fully charged Zippy 3S 800mAh. I have connected everything, Motors were beeping, I got into programming mode, was counting the beeps, suddently it burned. Same thing happened to the 80A Version of this ESC to my friend. He asked me to help him programm his ESC and while programming one of the poer transisotrs burned up. that was on a 4S. If that happens to one ESC, that not a big deal, but it happened to 4 and 1 of my friend. I recommend getting another ESC series from HK.

 tommy2toes 2088 points
you could try a smaller 2s . it sounds like lipo protection was off or nicad was on maybe? not sure with out inspecting the unit. and they wont run a 4s way too much for this 15 18 amp hk esc 3s max. mine always work but you dont usually need to do any programming so why are you?
mr_pibb  13 points - 11/29/2012

I have bought 4 of these. They all burned up without a prop on the motor while I was programming the esc. That happend to one after another.
 tommy2toes 2088 points
the only explanation is the batterys were too big too much voltage what were you using?

Take note that it can be flash with tp8khz.hex and nice to use for Multicopter platform, nice throttle response.Great! I love it. Cheap Cheap, to flash the ESC just buy AVR programmer and ATMEL pin block toucher. just 25$ , you can be flash every ATMEL chip ESC. Before I flash , it's very bad and I cannot increase gyro gain for my quad, after flash, wow very stable.
 tommy2toes 2088 points
great info thanks Nyana!

It looks like I got a bad one. Bought an HK-18A ESC for a 250 size Heli. After a couple of minutes flight the ESC shut off. I noticed that if the battery got a little low and I punched the throttle slightly, the ESC would shut off then act as if the battery was just plugged in (beeps as if just powered on). Decided to monitor the voltage while running with a light load. I found that the speed control would reset (shut off then power back on) at around 6.5V (using a 2S battery). I've tried everything I could think of on programming, still no change. Has anyone else experienced this?
 OssLV 2 points
It is normal to me. As per cell battery is then 3.25 v it is battery protection. I normally do not put it less than 3.7 per cell. So It is all ok with product.

hi i just bought 4 of this for my quad, i tried to do the throtle range on all the esc individually, all of them works great but one does spin the motor even though the beep are all correct, can someone help me?
 wisemen 6 points
i just bought toward pro 18A and paired it with this esc seems to matched. now i use 3 hk ss 15-18a and 1 toward pro 18A. problem solved.
 tommy2toes 2088 points
ok that works too. but you can fix the one by changeing the timming in programming mode look under files tab to see how. hope this helps in the future, tommy thumbs up credit if it does thanks ,tommy

Newbie here planning to use it with 2213N 800Kv Brushless with lipo, DO I need to do this programming procedure at all?
 ElectricAussie 2783 points
Hi Yash, This ESC will work fine with a 2213N motor. There's no programming that you need to do other than setting the throttle range. The ESC comes without connectors, so you'll need to order connectors for the 3 motor wires (3.5mm polymax M/F) and a battery connector for the ESC. Cheers, EA
 Minkey 18 points
You don't really need to program it. Though I always buy the card programmable so I can use my turnigy programming card and be sure of what settings I am running it at.
 RC Flyer Guy 130 points
You don't have to but it will work better if you at least set the throttle end points.

Good ESC. Peak measured current draw with my C20 Motor was 12 Amps. Very decently priced. LImited programming but can be done through the tx sticks. Good value for money. Recommended for indoor flying for model weight 120-200 gms.

15 thumbs up!
I ordered two of them for first tests because I want to use them in a little quadcopter project. They work very smooth with the AX-2308N1100 motor from Hobbycity. Unfortunetely, the two delivered ESCs are not identical with respect to the firmware: the beep sequence at startup is different and they have different working curves. Nevertheless, I have one in my ordering pipeline and will order two additional ones for that attractive price. So I hope to have success in finding a good combination for my quadcopter project.

Don't judge the super simple escs by the price! They work. The true value of these controllers is the ease of use. I have many other more expensive esc's, and the super simple actually have had fewer problems. If you try one you'll get more of them.
