Some reviews state that they can't be balanced, is this correct? Isn't it possible to balance the four cells using a standard balancer?

The only way there would be an issue is if there were a faulty cell. There are plenty of packs on the market there are 2s2p or more (even from companies that aren't HK). A standard balancer is sufficient and should notice any significant issues with the battery.

Since you will be charging as a two cell pack the balancer will not notice that there are two cells per the two cells. So if one of the two cells that makes up the parallel aspect of the pack goes bad there is no way to balance that loss.

You can balance the two sets of cells.. but not 4 individually, but since they discharge as a single cell the way their wired, I've yet to have problems withing less then 1/10th of a volt in over 4 months of use.

The 2p just means how many cells are in parallel to get to the total capacity. The amount of cells in parallel does is not important to the esc. A 2s pack is 2 totals cells, both in series (to get you to 7.4V), a 2s2p pack is 4 cells, 2 in series and each series has 2 cells in parallel (AKA, each individual cell is 3.7V, 2600mAh, when you connec them all together they run as a 7.4V 5200mAh system). If the sidewinder can run 2s, you can go with a 2s(which is really 2s1p), 2s2p, 2s3p, ect. Personally I would not go above 2p (you start to get to many cells in the packs). But it won't effect the esc.

Sure thing Chris. I have used 2s3p with the Castle. These work great for 1/10 scale. I'm using them in my 4x4 Slash. Tons of run time.

you can run this pack with sidewinder. Voltage is same as in 2s packs, there is just 2 cells wired in parallel and 2 cells in series.

These are 2s packs. in configuration they use two smaller cells in parallel to get to the 5200mah level. I.E. two 2600mah packs in parallel to make 5200 than two of those two cells in series to make a 2s2p 5200mah pack.

Is there any advantage or disadvantage to these over a standard 2 cell lipo?

Some say there's a disadvantage as you can't balance the 4 cells in it seperatly... but I've had them work flawlessly for the last few months. and they have a great discharge rate.. haven't killed them in my brushless summit yet.. so yeah :)

to be fair, hobbyking's measurements aren't always perfect, usually close, but a mil or two off could change whether they fit or not. So in my opinion it is a fare question, additionally, it is closer to25.4mm (with a length of 137mm it adds up).
