Turnigy Accucel-8 150W 7A Balancer/Charger

Turnigy Accucel-8 150W 7A Balancer/Charger

The Accucel-8150 is a Lipoly/LiFe battery charging workhorse. Capable of handling up to 8S, 7A or a maximum of 150W charging current plus it balances and discharges packs which is critical for keeping your expensive batteries in perfect condition.
This charger has a 12v input and can be used with a mains 12v power supply or your car battery when at the field.
TURNIGY Accucel chargers are built with quality components and produced in robotic pick-n-place SMT technology machines to produce a reliable and accurate charger.
You wont find a better priced quality 8 Cell charger!

The Accucell has various programming and charging modes and will accept and safely charge NiCd,Lilo, Lipo, LiFe, Pb batteries.

ATTENTION.
There are several chargers now entering the China market that look similar to the Accucel-8. These chargers are produced with cheaper FETs and unfortunately much less accurate and very unsafe. There has been reports of the copied chargers over-charging packs and not balancing correctly.
Our chargers have CE and RoHS certification, proving there safety. Plus, thousands of customers the world over have used our chargers with excellent success.
Your batteries are expensive. We understand this and thats why we will not carry low-quality charging devices.

This has been a great charger for me for over 2 years, but now all the push button switches have stopped working, or just barely work. You have to hit the buttons as hard as you can to get them to work. I took it apart and I can't find replacement for the switches. Does anyone know where I can find replacements? I have other switches for flysky 9x switch replacements I have had to replace, but these are much different. I could solder them in but the buttons won't fit any more. I don't really want to leave the cover off to use it with the wrong fitting switches. Any one have any ideas. All 4 switches need to be replaced.

will this charge nimh? battery as well newbee question
 ElectricAussie 2777 points
Hi Mark, Yes there is a program for just about every type of battery: NiCd, NiMH, LiFe, etc. You just set the number of cells and the charge rate and it does the rest. This is the sort of charger you buy as your primary one to use on every size/type of battery pack you will ever use in the hobby. It will even charge your 12v car battery. Cheers, EA!

hi i have a lipo batt,5.6amp and want to do storage charge as i intend not to use the batt for awhile, but i can only select up to 5amp on the charger only, so how can i select to 5.6amp? am i doin the storege charge in the right way?
 ElectricAussie 2777 points
Hi syed, You can perform the storage charge operation at 5A with no problems. It never hurts a LiPo to charge it at less than 1C. It's charging at over 1C that can be risky. Cheers, EA!

What watts will this discharge at it doesn't seem to say anywhere or in the manual, I can see it's up to 5.0A but that won't be the limiting factor ????
 LeszekJ 791 points
Max discharge power 25W. Example: 25W/11.1V=2.25A
 Alexey 34 points
Why so many people worry about dis_charge feature?! Go to your local auto store, buy a halogen headlamp - and you will get 65W dis-charger for life for $10.
 dhruvafreak 530 points
Way too hot while discharging at 5amps . It can fry the internals. Not recommend for discharging.

How to charge Life on the Accusell 8150 charger, I can not find a setting on the charger....Ken
 LeszekJ 791 points
"User setup", "V.Type" - you need to set 3.3V (LiFe). Then go to lithium battery programs and start charging or balance charging.

Personal Accucel my Turnigy 8150 began also with this error, and the source is requested under the conditions now appearing out of nowhere get this message "CONNECT BREAK". Does Hoobikyng and or Turnigy, will take steps to solve the problem, because in fact may be an error in the same project? If someone has a positive solution and can pass, Already thank you very much!
Daves  3 points - 4/15/2013

The problem is that this is happening with all kinds of battery, lipo, life, nimh, nicd etc. ie using both the balancer and not using
 Roger 2245 points
Are you sure your power supply is capable of providing the required amps for the charger? Try to charge with a lower amp, about half of the required current, if it doesn't throw the connection break error, you need to change to a more capable power supply.

I bought this charger and etilizei only a single time and now appears written conectio break ... what could have happened?
 LeszekJ 791 points
"Connection break" means there is no electrical continuity in the main charging circuit (charger - main charging leads - battery). Check each component of the path.
Daves  3 points - 4/14/2013

I bought this charger and etilizei only a single time and now appears written conectio break ... what could have happened?
 ElectricAussie 2777 points
Hi Daves, The most common cause of a "Connection Break" error is not having both leads (main power and balancing lead) plugged in when you start charging. The charger uses both leads for the charging/balancing process so it checks for the presence before it starts. Cheers, EA!

Hi guys I am writing from Italy so please be patient with my English. By the way, as written in the subject, I am experiencing a strange issue with my charger, I discovered it just accidentally, looking at the display while it was in use. When the time elapsed counter arrives to 231 mins, it doesn't go up. I mean that the two digits of the seconds continues to run from 00 to 59 but, after that, the minutes don't increase to 232, 233 and so on, even if the charger continues to run with the battery... Any similar issue ? At the moment I discovered this during a NIMH pack recharge. I will post a video ASAP.
 LeszekJ 791 points
That is something new. The time counter loops at 256 minutes, IFAIR.

does anyone have the problem that the charger must be heated to 25 degrees before it will start up? hmm wonder what it could be. Was not like that the first time I used it
 LeszekJ 791 points
Maybe some high-end electronic devices have that kind of protection. This charger does not belong to that group. Just strange. Isn't it a power source related problem?
 Electric75 45 points
It is usually in the garage where it's 15 degrees, but it is completely dead when I try to turn it on. When I have it for 25 degrees about 1 hour then it starts up fine without any problem. using a Turnigy T-20PR. 16A (220W)power supply, so it should be more than enough power. it worked fine the first month, it is now in the past I have to warm it up before I can start it
 chopper50 259 points
Hi all, im having some trouble with the cold weather in uk, all my digits on the display look all gibberish untill it warms up then its ok, still charges but annoying because i cant see the amount of charge its getting and if its ballancing properly also the fan is atrociously noisy just waiting for it to go pop.
 LeszekJ 791 points
If you are charging lithium batteries in temperature so low that LCD "freezes", you can expect some troubles.
 chopper50 259 points
Oh thanks for info peace of mind now cheers

My charger keeps shutting off and re starting after a couple minutes of charging my power supply is only rated to 3.33 amps so i never charge over that could there be an issue inside the charger or something wrong with power supply
 ElectricAussie 2777 points
Hi Daine, You don't say what voltage your PS or the LiPos are, but it sounds like you're power supply is the cause. The watts in/out is the critical factor. The charger is rated 150W max output, so you would want a power supply that can provide at least 160W-170W because of the losses to heat and power used to run the fan, screen, processor, etc. If you're using a 16vdc power supply, it would have to put out 10A (W=V x A) to provide 160W. Makes your PS sound pretty wimpy, doesn't it? A simple way to solve which (charger or PS) is causing the problem. Power the charger from a car battery and charge 1 LiPo at the same charge rate you were using with your PS. If it goes thru the entire charge cycle normally, your PS is the problem. Cheers, EA!

It was charging my 3 cell 2200 batteries for ages now it wont even do those i tried charging my 5amp 3 cell at 5 amps then realised my ps could only do 4amp (not 3.33 sorry thats the other ps i have) could i have done damage thenits a modified sky rc ps just says input: 100-240v ~ 50/60Hz 1.5A Output:15v 4A it also says its 60W as i said it was working fine untill i tried charging my bigger battery
 daine 3 points
Just trying it on the car battery now the fan isn't starting even though the charger is putting out 5A been on for 3 mins and hasn't shut off and restarted just has no cooling
 ElectricAussie 2777 points
Hi Daine, Thanks for the credit. The fans are supposed to be temp controlled, but all but one of my HK/Turnigy chargers have experienced fan problems of one sort or another. If the charger is running normally off the car battery (except for fan) then you can be pretty sure the PS was the cause of the trouble. If you pushed the charge rate to where the PS was overloaded the output probably started to fluctuate which is all it takes to have the charger error/shutdown. If the fan hasn't come on, try lightly tapping the case (at the fan opening) with the handle of a screwdriver. If the fan begins running, then it's just in need of a light lube. A small shot of WD40 will fix the problem. Cheers, EA!
 daine 3 points
Thanks mate might just get a new one and a better ps just incase it decides to die on me
 ElectricAussie 2777 points
Hi Daine, It never hurts to have an extra charger. I have an Accucel-6 50W and a ECO-6 200W at the moment. The Accucel has been flawless. The ECO-6 has a dim screen and the fan sounds like a truck, but they both get used daily and have been going strong for 2 years. At these prices, no complaints! Cheers, EA!

Is this charger suitable for 2s3p Lipos? Will most chargers work on this battery configuration? Graham
 chopper50 259 points
Hi grbrow, This charger is very powerful but does not have a ballance socket for 2s, it will charge 2s or 1s, I use a seperate ballancer for that, If youve got low mah choose a smaller charger. hope this helps,,,Chris

 LeszekJ 791 points
It has no socket for 2S, however it can easily balance charge 2S. You can use each balancer socket of the charger if you know where the negative (ground) pin is (right-most). It may be necessary to trim slightly the left plastic tab of the balance plug with a knife.
 grbrow 2 points
Thank you both for the response - I'll do some more searching
 Kiwi_fulla 252 points
you can get a Parallel board her at HK and that way you can do multiple 2 - 6S batteries as long as they are all of the same Type and MAH rating.....
 Alan_L 60 points
I charge 2s with mine. Just put the balance lead all the way to the right of the 3s port.

Control failure! Hi all! I have this charger for some time now and it was working just fine. Today I wanted to discharge 3 of my LiPo batteries (Turnigy 3S 2200MAh) I've set discharging current at 2,0A, cut off was set automaticaly on 9,0V (normal for 3S) First two batteries discharged normaly but when I started discharging third one, discharging current was shown as 7,2A and after few seconds there was a "control failure" error. I've tried several times but message pops up each time after few seconds of discharging. Anybody knows what could be the problem? Thank you! Best regards, Walter
 LeszekJ 791 points
You have to open the charger case. Search for burnt/cracked components. I bet on one of the power MOSFETs.
BEST ANSWER CREDIT AWARDED
 walter.mcsa 37 points
Hi LeszekJ, you were right, one of two wires that act as a fuse was melted. Before i solder another wire, how do I check if one of the MOSFET's is also dead? Sorry for the noob question but I'm not so good with a multimeter as I should be. Thank you! Best regards, Walter
 LeszekJ 791 points
Could you take a photo of that wire and its surroundigs, please? It may be a current sensor which looks like a U-shaped wire - then you must find an exact replacement. The actual reason of failure remains unknown IMO. Check every component - visually at least.
 walter.mcsa 37 points
Exactly, one of the U shaped wires. One just next to a big capacitor. The one next to it is intact. What would an "exact replacement" be? Same gauge or same characteristics? Can I find something similar in eclectronics store? Visually, all other components look ok.
 LeszekJ 791 points
The same parameters: resistance and max power. If one of them is still intact, you can look for any markings. It may be difficult to buy a new one without the advice of skilled technician. You can also try to buy a broken Accucell-8 and replace the current sensor.

HELLO I HAVE CONTROL FAILURE error on accucel 6. it is the BIGGER BUTTON version which HAS the li-XX internal resistance measure. (I also had the FLAT button whic has NOT this) how to fix?
 LeszekJ 791 points
Change the power source. Try a 12V car battery.
 martin555 31 points
hi LeszekJ. I use now a 12v 5a 220v adapter from ebay, works good with other accucel6. and, this error accucel6 makes the control failure on car batt too...:-((

Hello all, I finally received my power source for this charger. When I connect my 3S 11.1V 1800mAh E-flite LiPo to the balance port and select 1.8A at 11.1V (3S) under the LiPo Balance setting I get a "Connection Break" message. I have tried lowering the amps but that doesn't work, any ideas? Thanks Dave
 RlsTheKraken 2 points
Disregard my last post, I just read the rest of all the posts on this page. LOL sry
 ElectricAussie 2777 points
Hi RisTheKraken, Sounds like you figured out that both leads from the LiPo need to be connected to the charger. Some of the charging/discharging is done thru the main lead and the balancing is done through the balancing plug, so the charger automatically checks both connections before it begins any charging operation. Cheers, EA!

 LeszekJ 791 points
It can charge 1S batteries through main leads.
Oscar  10 points - 2/25/2013

Okay thx for the quick reply. So do you think its worth it or should i stick with this charger. While charging (sry for the dumn question but im new to this) normally, not on a balancing charge i don't plug the balancing cable into the charger right. Just the black and red wires. Thx OScar. Ps what should i do about the cookies. They are enabled (just checked)
 LeszekJ 791 points
This one has the biggest charging power (150W) in the discussed group. This factor is important IMO. Always connect balance plug - even during normal charging (without balancing). In such situation, the charger can monitor individual cells and speed up charging. Cookies can be eaten by an adblocker, antivirus, etc.

Oscar, with either the accucell 8 or 6 you must have the main and balance lead plugged in or you will get a connection break error. Also a cell below 3 volts will give this error. I have 3 of the 8150's and have been useing them for a few years now and love them. Good product at a great price.
Oscar  10 points - 2/24/2013

Hi just as an extension to my other question. What do you guys think about the smart 6 ??? same price.give or take. I can't reply to any questions sorry. As it just says log in. I log in and then it says reply. I click reply and it say log in. etc OScar

Cookie problem - don't eat it instantly:-) Smart 6 - you pay more for the better LCD and the internal resistance measurement.
Oscar  10 points - 2/24/2013

HI guys Looking at getting this or the Accucel 6. Firstly would like your views on which one to get. I would also like to know the features of this charger. For example when you go onto the Accucel 6 page it gives a great long list of the features. Would somebody mind telling me what they are for this charger. Or even if they are the same and it has no extra features please say. Futhermore what power supply should i use for this. The T-20PS. Also if you feel the Accucel 6 is better please say what power supple i should use for that. Also please can you recommend one from HK not from another site or a computer power supple. I would like everything to come in one Parcel !!! Oscar
 LeszekJ 791 points
AFAIK the chargers share the same list of features except the charging power (50 vs 150W), maximal charging current (6 vs 7A) and maximal output voltage (number of LiPo cells: 6 vs. 8S). New PSU choice depends on the charger power and input voltage range. E.g.: for Accucel 6 - PRODUCT ID: 9052000023, for Accucel 8 - PRODUCT ID: T-20PS.

I just got it in, and i allready have a problem with the charger. When i try to balance my 4 cell Lipo's, it keeps saying "BATTERY VOL ERR CELL CONNNECT" I know i got it all connected as is suposed to be. But it keeps saying the same thing. Can anybody help me with it??
 LeszekJ 791 points
You have to take a voltmeter or lipo tester and check this battery. If you can read each cell voltage through balance plug then the charger needs a closer look.
 LeszekJ 791 points
That just crossed my mind: did you connect balancer plug to the charger when you "balance charge"?

Id did connect the balancer plug. I have 3 different batteries i tried it with and it kept saying the same thing.. Is there a way i can check the charger if it works how it suposed to be working??
 LeszekJ 791 points
Do you connect batteries directly to the charger or to an external balancer board?
 remco 6 points
directly to the charger..
 LeszekJ 791 points
If you have an ohmmeter or a wire tester, you may open the charger case and check electrical continuity between balance socket pins and balancer resistor array (easy to find).
 remco 6 points
Thanks for ur help, and i do have a ohmmmeter, but do'nt realy know what the components are that u refer to. I understand what balance socket pins are, but don't know what the resistor array means..
 remco 6 points
I know the 3 batteries are 100% in good shape, i tested them with another charger and they work just fine. But i need this charger to work because its alot better then my other charger..
 LeszekJ 791 points
Ok. Start with checking continuity between balance pins from 4S socket and 5S and 8S.
 LeszekJ 791 points
Rightmost from 4S (first, negative pin) to the rightmost from 5S, second to the second and so on.
 remco 6 points
Just done that and it's all good.. the meter is "bleeping" on the 1,2,3,4 and 5th pin and does not make a sound when i touch another pin..
 LeszekJ 791 points
I marked the balancer resistor array if you decide to open the charger: target=_blank>balancer

The link u posted is empty..

It says the link does not excist...
 LeszekJ 791 points
Ok. Copy url from target=blank>balancer and edit it: remove stupid %3Cbr%3E from it.
 remco 6 points
ive just tried to open the charger, but i can't get the top plate off. the big 4 buttons are in the way... I can't slide it off....
 LeszekJ 791 points
If I remeber correctly, there are two options: you can slide the rear slat to get access to power transistor screws or you can bend the charger case slightly to release the top plate without sliding.
 remco 6 points
I've found out how to open it.. With good long pliers u can remove the 4 buttons... Everything is good on the board.. But i think i know what the problem is.. i thought all Lipo's are JST-XH, but there not. Is there any whay i can tell what connection my lipo's are? I can balance them with a robbe power peak A4 charger..
 LeszekJ 791 points
JST-EH, I guess.
 Jimbolina1 214 points
Have you tried useing one of the other larger ports? You can use any of the larger balance ports just be sure to have the gound wire all the way to the farthest pin from the front. you will need to shave the set guide that is closest to you on the balance lead so it will fit. I am sorry to hear of your troubles. This charger has been my favorite for a long while now.

I'm sure I'm being very stupid, but how can a charger with an input voltage of max 18v, charge lead acid batteries of 36v. I'd have thought one battery of 12v would be about all it could do as 14,5v approx would be required
 LeszekJ 791 points
It is a buck-boost converter. No worries - it changes voltage levels.

54 thumbs up!
I Bought this charger because i tested a friends one and im really happy with it!!!
Best Price, excelent accesories.
You can charge really a123 at 7 amps!!!! this is 18 minute charge on 6s1pa123 pack

First i tested the Balancer, it works fine. Holds each cell at exactly 4.2V during charge. I didnt expect it to be that accurate.
You can set the minimum input battery voltage between 10 and 11V so you wont run your car battery dry.

Second tested the output voltages with my FLUKE tester. In a fresh charged pack in BALANCE mode, the results was:

6s1p 4000mah lipo

4.20 4.20 4.20 4.20 4.20 4.20 CHARGER

4.201 4.199 4.200 4.203 4.201 4.210
FLUKE READS
So there is an excelent balancer too!!!!

Third the temperatures of the internal circuits, never raise over 40Cº in a 5amp discharge, it seems that the cooling design was good

PC conectivity needs drivers and you can download the manual too if you haven´t one

My overall opinion is that this unit works very well, enables accurate charging, comes with just about every connector you might need, In both quality and function it is comparable to units costing 2 to 3 times as much.] Several of my friends are currently considering purchase of these now because of the great overall value. I would purchase another one without reservation especially in light of the cost to performance ratio. Absolutely incredible. I will be making more purchases from Hobby City.

The only thing i recomend to improve in this

Great charger.
Used it for my LiFE batterys.
BUT... after a couple months I can no longer select the LiFE batteries in the menu... it has disappeared without reason!!!
I can do no software update because the usb connection didn't work.

Otherwise works as marketed but the voltages are off big time. plus-0.12 at worst and that really makes me wonder whether they calibrate these things at the factory at all. Also the "Energy" reading that the charger gives out when using the USB link is completely useless and no where near the realistic values. Hence 3 stars although due to not giving 5 stars this review is probably going to be deleted by the HobbyKing Gestapo in no time.

There has been some changes to this charger. Gone are the temperature probe and the USB port. Plan to return as these 2 features are not implemented and there are other cheaper charger like Turnigy MAX80W 7A would be a better choice.
