Go to youtube for the video Search "HobbyKing Flying Shark EDF FMS : Crash Landing In To Operator " incase the link gets ****'ed out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sY4WKiom8go

This is the Hobby King Flying Shark. This is the old model that is made of EPS which is quite brittle when compared to the stronger EPO that I am used to. It is running for around 4min 30 sec on a Turnigy 2200mAh 3S LiPo.

This was the second flight of the day when I decided the mount the wing cam on the under carriage. Just as I was about to bring this in the low voltage sensor went off (4:16)and I brought it in fast, low and with out any skill. I thought it would be a good idea to try and jump over it after touchdown.

Video:

HD Wing Camera 1280x720p 30fps 5MP CMOS with a 16GB Class 10 Micro SD Card.

Setup:

I tired the recommended setup of this using a 39L outrunner but the sharks included EDF's machined aluminium parts were not milled out very accurately. This caused server vibrations. Vibrations so server the motor ripped its self apart when I was putting it on the watt meter. So I grounded the shark for two weeks and bought a complete EDF with motor. My final running setup is below:

- HobbyKing Flying Shark Kit (EPS) = SHARK-005ARR

- EDF64 with ADH300 Motor Assembled 252W(4300kv) = EDF64-ADH300

- HXT900 9g / 1.6kg / .12sec Micro Servo = HXT900

- Birdie 50A Brushless ESC w/ 3A BEC =

We had about 20 guys at the field and it was THE attention getter today.
With the HK ADH-300 combo it had plenty of power to climb out with authority and loop and roll without a problem. But the low, slow flybys are the best. The only drawback is the lack of directional control on the ground. When I tried to take off the first time, it just went around in one big circle. I bent one of the landing gear and then it went in a left circle. One more time and it took off straight. It took about 100 feet before it took off so you need some decent runway if using wheels. After landing, I had to straighten again. I flew 4 times and it was such a forgiving flyer with no bad flying habits at all. It's a great little jet.

Nice kit but it dings easily. I have mine ready to fly now. I used the recommended HK combo motor/edf and it is a drop in fit with the lip around the edf fitting in the ring around the inside of the fuselage. The motor wires are very small gauge but it has LOTS of power. Its the smallest 4300 edf motor that I've seen and may be the most powerful that I have (have three others). Be careful because there are no holes to run the aileron servo wires into the fuselage but they are easily made in the wing root with a pencil or small phillips screwdriver. You also have to make your own hole for motor wires to go into the fuselage and have to run 8-9 inches of three motor wires (depending on where you put your ESC) from motor to ESC. All other hardware was included and worked well with the exception of the elevator guides. I used bigger ones to allow the rods to move well inside and then epoxy guides to fuselage to reduce rod flexing. I used HK HXT-900 servos for ailerons and Turnigy 90S metal gear servo for elevator rods. I used 40 amp ESC with switching 3 amp bec and a Rhino 3s-40C-2550 lipo. The watt meter gave 424 watts of power at 36 amps with a battery that was not completely fresh at the time (charged a couple of days before). Used silicone rubber to hold in aileron servos and then put clear packing tape over them. Also used clear tape from wing tip all the way across fuselage t

Just got mine this week, had an issue with the impeller collet being off center and not useable. the body of the shark(plane) has dings dents and scrapes. mayhap from adding the extra batteries that i ordered with it. as for the build the EDF will need about a foot long wire to run thru a hole in the belly to the head of the shark to connect to the esc. its not to bad to fish (no pun inteneded) the wire thru the head to the hole to connect the edf unit. the edf itself needed spot glued into place as there was nothing to stop it from sliding forward. the pushrods that are supplied are VERY flexable and imho need to be on the top of the elevator and use the pull for the up witch requires cutting new slots into the body about 3/4 inch above the old slots. found to put the elevator servo twords the center of the provided plywood rack that i had to remove and reglue into the correct slot. I found the best cg to be 3 3/4 to 4 inches from the leading edge of the wing (newbes remember the low wing need to find cg upside down) THIS THING FLIES SWEEEET!! using a 40amp hk esc, 4200kv turnigy motor and have used 1600mah 3s nanotec to 2650mah 30-40c zippy if you can get cg correct will handle alot bigger. got 3 to 8 min flight time depending on throttle useage.

HAPPY SWIMMING UH FLYING ;)

This is an awesome "fish" since it flies well and fast, having said that, there are 2 minor details that need to be addressed. First is the CG, to perfectly balance this fish, u need to add 68g of lead weight to the front, I used the weight left from one of those Art Tech products (for this case, the Minimoa). The push rods for the elevator flexes so I add a hollow tube, pass both pushrods into the tube to reduce flexing. I used Turnigy 3000mAh 4S 20C Lipo Pack which weighs 337g. With this combination of battery and the lead weight, this Fish balance perfectly, I took the wheels off since its hard to get paved road where I am at so I decided to belly land,..looks way better too. However, when u belly land this Fish, take not that it will flip since the belly is curve and the weight plus the 4S battery are in front.

Im running a 3s setup with a 2200mAh battery,
got a flight time of 2:30 before my esc detected low power.
Flew really well, nice and stable and easy to fly and looks
great :)
Didnt realise when i bought it that there was no rudder control,
but flies fine without one :)

Wow, this thing flies GREAT! I bought the bare airframe only and am running a 4s setup. I'm very impressed with how well-behaved it is in the air, for looking so unusual it flies quite conventionally. Aerobatics are very nice as well!
