For those modelers that enjoy building kits or building from scratch this balsa and wood, Tiger Moth Kit is an ideal model. With a wingspan of 980 millimeters (38.6 inches), it isn’t too big to fit easily in your car and you can remove the wings. The kit comes with plans and easy to follow the build guide.

The Tiger Moth has been a “classic” plane that first flew in 1931 and is still flying in many parts of the world. It was used by the air forces of many nations as a trainer during WWII as well as for training and enjoyment in the civilian world.

All parts are laser cut to ensure that they easily fit together. It also comes with carbon-fiber wing spars and other tubes, wire undercarriage, and a plastic cowl. You will need covering film for your choice of color and an electric power system and a 4-channel radio system. The recommended power system is a 2212~2216 1000~1400KV brushless motor with 20~30A ESC and 1800~2200mAh 3S Lipo battery spinning an 8~9inch propeller.

Like all Tiger Moths, this plane is easy to fly but has that extra challenge that all biplanes have exhibit rudder is needed with ailerons for turning. Enjoy the experience of building and flying this magnificent biplane.

Very nice plane

Nov 25, 2020

I said I will give it a try and this plane really surprised me. The details are on a high level and I think I will have it just hanging in my room :) And its easy to be constructed. One important thing: servos in the wings are not 9g - please use smaller since 9g will not fit.

Tiger Moth Balsa Kit

Nov 10, 2020

Good fun to make but not suitable for novice. Included instructions very poor with several mistakes in graphics & translation; but plenty of help on the internet. Covering with 'oracover' film was hard work to get looking right but overall a most enjoyable lockdown project. RC was easy to set up but as yet un-flown?

Terrible instructions, lacking materials

Sep 25, 2020

I bought this kit to teach my son how to build R/C airplanes, something I loved as a young man. Unfortunately the instructions are very inadequate, particularity on critical issues such as servo installation and pieces that are directional.
Also, if you install the servos correctly, the wires for the wing servos are not long enough to run through the wing to the receiver. You also need a Y cable to connect to he 2 servos to a single radio channel. Neither the Y cable nor the extension needed to connect the wing servos are included in the kit or even mentioned in the documentation. Also not enough covering material is included, I wanted my son to do some covering to teach him how to do it, but if he made any mistakes as all beginners do there would not have been enough to complete the project.
Once built, the plane did fly well, though.

Weak tailwheel control

Aug 07, 2020

The tailwheel flexes the bottom of the rudder so much, it makes ground handling difficult. I added a hinge between the bottom of the rudder and fuselage to stiffen the wheel handling; photo in Manuals/Files - RudderHinge.jpg

Easy build, good value, but with some minor issues

Aug 02, 2020

The kit itself is of good quality and excellent value, with an extensive hardware package. Most parts fit well and assembly is straightforward.
The motor mount requires an extension (not supplied) for use with a modern brushless motor.
As built from the kit, the model would require a significant amount of nose ballast to get the centre of gravity correct. With some modification, it is possible to move the battery to beneath the motor, reducing the ballast requirement.
The kit cowling is dissappointing, lacking the distinctive profile of the cooling air exits of the full size Moth.
The kit interplane struts are oversize. Both these aspects of the kit may be acceptable to a novice builder, in the interests of ruggedness and simplicity.
The kit can also provide a good basis for customisation.
With modern brushless motor, radio gear and LiPo battery, the model is light and should be a docile flyer. My example is built, but not yet flown.
