Southern Rail have been manufacturing detailed and quality HO scale model railway replicas for serious railway modellers and collectors since 2011. They specialise in modelling diesel and steam locomotives, rolling stock, trackside buildings and rail accessories for all the Australian States and their various railways. Whether you are modelling a main line or branch line in Queensland, Victoria or New South Wales or any other part of Australia, Southern Rail are a must to bring your railway to life with these high quality products.

In 1911 the first of what would become fourteen 2-8-2 tank locomotives were ordered from Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd. by the East Greta Coal Mining Company (EGCM). Contrary to popular belief, they were not designed to match the NSWGR T and TF class (later D50 & D53) standard goods locomotives, as these machines were not being used to connect with the coal mine traffic, but rather because Beyer Peacock had on hand the tooling for the 2-8-0 tender locomotives, it was much easier and cheaper to create a modified machine from the existing design. Nor was the specification identical to the standard goods locos, it included higher working boiler pressure and a smaller heating area.

At the time of their introduction, the class 10 had the highest tractive effort of any two-cylinder locomotive in Australia. In 1918 the Hebburn Coal Mining Company and the EGCM amalgamated their respective railway interests, creating the South Maitland Railways Pty Ltd. By this time four class 10 were in service. 10 more were built in a number of batches from 1920 to 1925, those that entered service in 1920 having been delayed due to World War One. Because of the withdrawal of older machines and the amalgamation of the two companies locomotive fleets, the numbers of the 10 class were not all consecutive, being numbered as follows; 10, 17-20, 22-28, 30 & 31.

This beautifully built ready to run highly detailed HO scale steam locomotive is a South Maitland Railway Class 10 2-8-2 in the black livery of the SMR PTY Ltd, this version has the small logo. This modified version (running number 19) circa 1970-1979 has the larger coal bunker, cab side windows, coupler lift bar and has the valve beside the dome. This loco was at the end of an era, South Maitlands Railways ceased using steam locomotives in 1983 but a few carried on working the collieries until 1987. The detail and finish on these loco's is stunning, it even has a painted driver and fireman. This loco runs beautifully due to it's 5 pole skew-wound motor, twin brass flywheels, all wheel drive and all wheel pick up regardless of whether they are running on an analogue or DCC system. It is DCC ready and has the Southern Rail Models "Sound of Power" module installed. Other features include blackened wheels, genuine Kadee couplings, operating headlight, highly detailed body and running gear. Some of the intricate detailed parts have to added to the loco such as spring loaded buffers but full instructions and an exploded diagram are included.

If you are modelling a steam era Australian railway layout then one of these beautifully crafted South Maitland Class 10 locomotives is must.
