The A-1 Skyraider came too late to see action in WW2 but proved it's worth as an outstanding ground attack aircraft in both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, able to deliver a formidable punch and withstand a considerable amount of battle damage and still get home, the A-1 had an impressive service record until being eventually replaced by the A-10 as the US forces principal ground attack aircraft.

This impressively large Skyraider is packed with features, made from tough EPO foam, this large and super scale warbird is easy and fast to assemble, especially as all servo's, the ESC and powerful brushless outrunner motor are all pre-fitted. The Skyraider comes with twist and turn retracts and functioning gear doors, in addition, the tailwheel is also retractable, flaps are fitted for slow, controlled landings and for the final scale touch, servo operated air brakes have been pre-installed.

The A-1 has plenty of thrust from the massive and very scale 4 blade prop for realistic climb outs and this great size warbird also has superb slow fly performance for realistic scale flight, "armed" to the teeth, there is no doubt, this Skyraider looks like it means business!

After months of putting it off, I maidened this "monster" of a Warbird on Sunday. WOW!! It is huge in the air and on the ground! My fear was always the retracks as per other comments. I have flown this bird twice and have landed it on rubber matting runway as well as grass. Using all the air brakes, flaps and judgement, I have greased the landings with no issue to the retracks.... So far!! It has plenty of power when yoou overshoot the runway to pull away and try again, and flies like it is on rails. Had to add some down trim due to smaller battery (3300mh) but no big issue. Easy to take off with massive 4 blade prop and a snap to land. I come in under 1/4 throttle with full flaps airbrakes deployed... Looks and flies sensational. A real head turner at the field. Top Plane!!

Just got done building this beautiful warbird. The quality of the kit was very good. The build went smooth. This kit came with soup to nuts. Great instruction booklet. The only thing I had to purchase extra was a pilot. You cant beat Hobby King price on this impresive 1600mm warbird.

I did purchase a set of eflite 100 degree rotating retracts just in case the reviews are correct. From everything I read about this model the retracts are week. I have to say I have cycled the stock retracts 40 time with zero problems, only time will tell. TIP* Look up A-1 Skyraider build on youtube. There is a real nice 3 part build log with some real good tips. I did add a carbon fiber strip to the elevator for strength and two small strips of wood on the hatch for easy lifting without crushing the foam. All these mods were on the 3 part build review.
As soon as the weather clears up I will add a flight review can.t wait.

Thanks Hobby King for the great value. PS they do have replacement props and prop hub available.

A-1 Skyraider 1600mm w/Retract

Feb 12, 2013

Very good model, excellent flight performances. In air looks as a natural airplane. It is desirable to make small adaptations with cables operating a tail wheel, I have suspended them on a spring then also the wheel turns out with amortisation and a cable do not sag when the wheel is cleaned. On the ends of wings and in front of a tail wheel to deliver Wing Skids L50xH18mm. In default Retracts the airplane less will suffer.

I purchased this plane 2 mos. ago and i have repaired it every time it gets off the ground. First problem the propeller broke upon take-off,Second the landing gear broke before take-off, Third the wing buckled on take-off, all resulting in a crash, Fourth the wires in the motor became unwound resulting in a crash so with all that said motor has been replaced, replaced all servos with metal gear servos and replaced the propeller from Tower Hobbies, i have been building planes for over 20 yrs and this one is very dissapointing, waiting to fly it on the next warm day.

I received this for my Christmas present and it arrived damage free and well packed. The instructions are a bit sparse but there is not a lot to the plane and it all went together easily. I managed to balance it correctly, 75mm from leading edge, without the use of any lead with a big 40000mAh battery.
However, I took it out for a taxi on our Astroturf strip and one leg collapsed virtually straight away. This was before it had ever taken off or landed. I realise that the whole plane is good value but I'd expect the retracts to hold up for a taxi around. I managed to take the plane off and it flew really well, needless to say the same leg collapsed upon landing.
Its a real shame, the plane looks really good, flies well but is let down by retracts that can't even cope with a taxi on a mirror smooth surface.
I will fix it but I'd rather have paid a bit more in the first place and received retracts that work.

Model arrived well packaged within a couple of days of my order. The main assemblies go together easily without the need for any glue. Glue will be needed to attache all the ancillary equipment .The only awkward parts of the assembly were fitting the wires for the tail wheel steering and retracting wires for the sprung undercarriage covers. Fitting the tail wheel wires would be easier with another pair of hands or some means of locking the tail wheel in the inline position. I found that fitting the fine wire to the undercarriage covers was easier using a very small piece of brass tubing which I crimped to secure the loops.

It was essential to have the correct size cross head ( philips ) screwdrivers to fit the different screws to avoid slipping of the head and damaging the foam. The foam is quite easy to mark / damage so a soft towel or other surface helps prevent marking the models surface.

So far I am very impressed with the model. The only downside was the manual which provides small photos with very little description. A search on your favourite video site will reveal a complete construction video for this model which provides all the information you could ask for.

Now waiting for weather to improve before test flying.

Awesome aircraft HK! Only one major prob (as per forums etc) is the retracts. I replaced stock with EFlite retracts as many people do. The minor issue was the prop decals were peeling off and looked crappy...replaced with yellow paint on the tips. The packaging was perfect and not one sign of damage. I have flown 7 times now and it acts like a real prop aircraft with torque roll to the left on takeoff roll and is a dream to fly. I also added Dubro soft rubber wheels to the gear as I fly on a very average grass strip and it has cut down excessive vibrations on takeoff and landing rolls that was happening with the stock "hard" wheels.

I have put the lower air brake door on a seperate channel so I can drop "propaganda" messages (using bi-degradeable foam packing bits) to all the "petrol" head pilots at our field just for something different.

If it wasnt for the U/C this would get a 5 star all round but I was happy to spend a bit more to keep this awesome model in the air and have people comment how good it flys! Well done HK.

Awsome plane to fly its very scale and looks great in the sky. My only problem I had with the build was that the balsa mounts for the retracts had to be drilled, and I only got one pin for the retracts to rotate it needs two and oh yes the manual sucks but other than that this plane was easy to build and once again, a nice looking plane. Thanks Hobbyking.

Firstly this bird is big! If you haven't got room in your hanger, get rid of 2 other planes to make room. It looks sooo good in the air & the way that 4 blade prop carves the air it sounds good too. It has awesome scale detail too. I upgraded the retracts as the originals only have small motors & failed after a while. This is a plane you'll have in your hanger for a long time due it's toughness & how well it flies
