We took the Afro and put it on a Diet!!..Developed from the ground up, we wanted to build a truly Multi-rotor specific ESC that would offer the best performance and value in the market today. We wiped the slate clean and looked to the community for inspiration and help in designing an ESC that truly could be known as “The Multi-rotor ESC”

Enter Simon and Hamasaki AKA SimonK and timecop. This combination of hardware and firmware expertise in conjunction with the Hobbyking in house engineering team gave us the edge needed to develop an ESC like no other and hence the Afro series was born.

Boasting high efficiency, all N-channel MOSFET design, jitter-free hardware PWM input, and smooth power response the Afro ESC series are set to change the expectations of multi-rotor pilots around the globe. The Afro ESC series ship with multi-rotor specific SimonK software preloaded! No need to reflash. For added convenience the Turnigy USB linker can be used via the PWM signal lead for any future software updates eliminating the need for complicated flashing jigs or the need to cut open the heat shrink.

The NEW Slim is really a 30a ESC with 2x15 amp N-MOSFET’s per channel x3 (same as the 30a) but was de-rated only because of the 20AWG wiring that was selected for ease of installations and to require less cooling for those tight installs, So have no worries if your set-up is on the edge.

MikroKopter I2C compatibility has also been built in as standard. A DIY port is available under the shrink wrap which allows using the ESC with MikroKopter hardware that uses I2C control.

Excellent ESC's!

Jan 12, 2018

I have been using these ESC's for the last 6 months with an accumulation of 70 flights. They have stood the test of many very hard crashes without a hint of problems. I would buy more but these are still going strong! Most definitely recommend them!

Great little esc, fits nicely in my 16mm arms. I was a little concerned about cooling with it inside the arms, but it was never an issue. Although the esc board is rated for 30a and the wires limit the esc to 20a, I would not recommend exceeding 20a per esc especially if you are running the esc in the arms. I was easily able to flash this with the afro flash tool, and found that running BLHeli ran the motors smoother than SimonK. Overall this is a great light weight solution and allows for clean wiring. Note that the esc is very slim and long so make sure your arms are long enough if you plan to run internally.

What a helpful size, i used 4 pieces in my Quanum XJ470 multicopter. They find a place in the motorarms with a inside diameter of 15mm. I use them with 2113 motors up to 4s!

I've purchased the "Afro" brand ESC's in the past and was a little worried about this "smaller" one. It's nice and small and just plain "works" with no issues. I was worried about the 20awg wiring so I "upgraded" it to 18awg and upgraded the firmware to the latest version and so far I have had no issues. The "Afro" brand of ESC's are the only ones I'll buy.

30A ESC in the size and disguise of a 20A ESC. Great for pushing the limits. One star less for quality because out of 6 one was shorted-out but price-wise still can't complain, just buy some spares.

If you use Pixhawk/HKPilot32 then make sure you set RC_SPEED to 250 (the maximum PWM frequency of which the 1KHz ESC speed is divisible) to avoid stuttering/sync issues and latest SimonK firmware!

Shame there is not more documentation about the I2C functionality because native 1KHz control frequency would be ideal and some flight controllers support that. Pixhawk too but that also lacks documentation. Anyway, it works well on Pixhawk with the right settings and firmware.
