While most of the eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) industry is looking to capitalize on flying taxis and aerial fulfillment, Airspeeder has its eye on something completely different: Flying Race Cars.

Founded in 2019 by entrepreneur Matthew Pearson, Airspeeder is a manufacturer and pioneer in developing electric racing quadcopters (flying cars). Their mission is simple: to establish the next generation of racing events with their inaugural flying car racing series EXA.

Boasting a thrust-to-weight ratio greater than an F-15 fighter jet and engineered by leaders in space tech, Formula 1 Racing, and the aviation industry, Airspeeder has now completed the first test flights of their debut flying racecar – The MK4 – and is poised to launch three racing events at three global locations this year.

All teams will use the same race-craft and pilots will operate this full-scale flying car from a simulator that mimics a future cockpit. Similar to Formula 1, the MK4 is designed with a removable battery and requires a pit crew to service and replace the battery throughout the race.

Because racing takes place in the air, no physical infrastructure is needed and instead, the racetrack will be displayed electronically and follows the host country’s regulations. Moreover, robotic “aviators” will take the pilot’s place inside the aircraft and will imitate the actual pilot’s movements so teams can learn the pilot’s impact on the vehicle.

These rules and requirements will ensure the races are determined purely by the pilot’s skill, its pit crew, and their overall strategy while at the same time mitigating safety risks and limiting the race’s impact on the environment.
