Here is the Crash Cash Winner for July 2022:

Glen Bellows

1) Where are you from and how did you get into the hobby?

"I'm from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and I've always been very passionate about aviation. I started flying RC when I was 9 after my father bought me a Dynam HawkSky for Christmas. Now I'm 19 and I fly every chance I get (I've still got that HawkSky flying too)."

2) What’s the story behind your RC model and the crash?

"I inherited this model -a Hangar 9 Aspire EP 2m- from a friend last year during a graduation party. They hadn't flown it in many years, and it was still in new condition. I had to replace the old 27 MHz receiver for it to work with my transmitter, and I also replaced the nickel battery with a 2000 mAh lipo to improve climb performance, but otherwise, everything on it was stock. It flew extremely well and was by far my best glider. The crash happened while I was catching thermals. The plane lost the radio signal and entered a vertical dive. When I regained signal, I pulled up slowly to avoid snapping the wings, but this allowed it to build up too much speed, and the wings disintegrated due to extreme flutter. It was a windy day, so the pieces of the wing were blown into a cornfield a quarter mile from where the fuselage impacted the ground."

3) What's your favorite RC model and why?

"It's hard to pick favorites because all my planes are so different, but if I had to choose, it would be the Hangar 9 Aspire EP. It was such a gorgeous airplane both to look at and to fly. It could handle a ton of wind, was very smooth and stable, and its translucent purple wings would cast awesome purple shadows on the ground."

4) What is the best part of being an RC pilot and why?

"My favorite thing about flying RC planes is learning new skills. It is always so satisfying and rewarding when I master a new maneuver, beat my personal records, or build a new plane. I also love sharing those experiences with my friends and family. "
