  • On Sale: Hornby 00 Gauge BR Class 71 Bo-Bo E5018 in BR Green Era 6 (DCC ready)

    buy now

The early 1950s were a time of great plans and modern ideas, not least where the railways were concerned. Still recovering from the financial effects of the Second World War, many of these plans had to be implemented in a measured way. Electric traction was seen by the newly nationalized British Rail to be the answer and so attention was focused on new routes in the Southern Region, where third rail electrification had been in place since 1923.

Much of BR's Southern Region passenger traffic could be accommodated by the use of EMUs, but to cover the motive power requirement for 900-ton freight services, as well as the "Night Ferry" and "Golden Arrow" workings, a new electric locomotive was required. The design specification was based on the experience gained in the previous fifteen years, through the operation of Bulleid’s CC1 & CC2, Class 70 locomotives. By adopting the continental practice of reducing the weight, without sacrificing tractive effort, a smaller engine could be built, resulting in a 750v DC, 77 ton, Bo-Bo locomotive, 24 of which were built by BR's Doncaster works between 1958 and 1960.

The Hornby model of a Class 71 Bo-Bo is supplied DCC ready, it is plug n play, no complicated wiring is required. It is painted in BR Green with running number E5018 and has NEM close-coupled couplings as standard. The Class 71 Bo-Bo is powered by a 5 pole skew wound motor which provides a smooth and powerful drive unit.

  • On Sale: Hornby 00 Gauge Limited Edition BR "The Fifteen Guinea Special" Train Pack with BR Std 7 Britannia Class 4-6-2 Loco Era 5 (DCC ready)

    buy now

The "15 Guinea Special" was the last mainline passenger train to be hauled by steam traction under British Rail on August 11, 1968, and the preparations for 1T57 were considerable. For the tour, five operational steam locomotives had to be retained on the books until after it was completed and their footplate crews rostered to work with steam for one last time.

This train pack recreates this event with the locomotive "Oliver Cromwell" No 70013, a Standard 7 Britannia Class 4-6-2, and 3 BR MK1 coaches. The loco is supplied DCC ready, it is plug n play so no complicated wiring is required if you wish to run on a DCC layout. It has NEM close-coupled couplings as standard and the A4 loco is powered by a 5 pole skew wound drive which provides a smooth and powerful drive unit. This is a limited edition, unopened, train pack out of the total 1000 packs available worldwide.

  • On Sale: Hornby 00 Gauge Limited Edition LMS Suburban Passenger Train Pack with Fowler 4P Class 2-6-4T Loco Era 3 (DCC ready)

    buy now

Away from the perceived glamour of the mainline, the real work of the railways took place on a myriad of suburban lines across the country, especially in the great conurbations of the Midlands. The main requirement for a locomotive working suburban services was to have quick acceleration, efficient braking, and good tractive ability, the latter being especially useful when pulling heavy carriages, full of commuters.

This Hornby train pack recreates a typical suburban working train, with Fowler 4P No. 2238 in LMS lined black and two Stanier 57' non-corridor Brake Third coaches 20768 and 20769, with Composite 16592, in LMS lined maroon livery. It is supplied DCC ready, it is plug n play so no complicated wiring is required if you wish to run on a DCC layout. It has NEM close-coupled couplings as standard and the Fowler 4P is powered by a 5 pole motor which provides a smooth and powerful drive unit. • On Sale: Hornby 00 Gauge BR Intercity Class 87 Bo-Bo 87010 "King Arthur" Era 7 (DCC ready)

    buy now

The Class 87 locomotive design resulted from a requirement for a more powerful mixed traffic electrical locomotive by British Rail which needed to cope with the route gradients of the West Coast Main Line between Weaver Junction and Glasgow. Electrification had been newly authorized over this section in 1970 and was scheduled for completion by May 1974, leaving little time to design a completely new locomotive from scratch and so British Rail decided to base the new class on the existing Class 86 locomotives.

The Hornby model of a Class 87 Bo-Bo is supplied DCC ready, it is plug n play, no complicated wiring is required. It is finished in the BR Intercity colors with running number 87010 "King Arthur" and has NEM close-coupled couplings as standard. The Class 67 Bo-Bo is powered by a 5 pole skew wound motor which provides a smooth and powerful drive unit.

  • On Sale: Hornby 00 Gauge DB Schenker Class 67 Bo-Bo 67013 Era 10 (DCC ready)

    buy now

A total of thirty Class 67 locomotives were built between 1999 and 2000 by Alstom, in Spain, for the English, Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS). These Bo-Bo configured diesel-electric locomotives have a large fuel capacity, electro-pneumatic brakes, and a top speed of 125mph (200km/h). The bodyshell is a monocoque load-bearing Alstom design, whilst the bogies, also designed by Alstom, are of an "H" frame design.

The engine, traction motors, and control electronics are the same as those used in Class 66 but differ in that the traction motors are frame-mounted, rather than axle hung, to reduce unsprung mass. The gear ratios have also been increased, allowing higher speeds, and the cab is designed around a central driving position.

The Hornby model of a Class 67 Bo-Bo is supplied DCC ready, it is plug n play, no complicated wiring is required. It is finished in DBS cherry red of DB Schenker with running number 67013 and has NEM close-coupled couplings as standard. The Class 67 Bo-Bo is powered by a 5 pole skew wound motor which provides a smooth and powerful drive unit.
