"When one gets an opportunity to talk to Tom Hunt about modding planes or RC in general it’s always informative, fun and creative. Such was the case when TH told me he was modding one of our Avios Grand Tundras into the Spy Grand Tundra L-345 inspired by the WW2-era L-3, L-4, L-5, liaison aircraft! I just HAD to get this on video!

While these were all relatively simply mods this was indeed a creative and fun video to work on and seeing the plane in action was of course a treat! Of particular interest were the bomb bays… something you’d not typically see on a stock GT!

For those that don’t know, Tom worked for Grumman for over 40 years as an aero-mechanical engineer. He's been an RC pilot since his early teens! His vast knowledge of the full-scale aircraft world is the perfect complement to his (and our) RC world. Tom also runs the best RC event in the Northeast which we never miss called the NEAT Fair. Details here: https://neatfair.org/

As to the plane itself, it began as a stock Avios Grand Tundra which Tom helped design from the very beginning with our very own Stuart. In addition to the aforementioned bomb bays Tom also added 3D printed LG leg covers, smaller tires (more scale and appropriate) and he also rounded the prop and control surfaces a bit to make it appear more like a 1930s aircraft.

Tom also reversed the landing gear for a few different reasons, see the video from 17:55 for those details.

At ~19.26 we get into the bomb bay details which are in my opinion the coolest mod to this plane! With those in place a pilot can drop almost anything that will fit in the bay(s) like candy, parachute men, toys, etc. Always a hit at an RC show or event with kids in the audience.

After the studio footage we get to the field and show off the plane’s outstanding flying characteristics and a few parachute ‘bomb’ drops.

Thanks to Callie Graphics for providing the decals for this mod which include the name of Tom’s wife Eileen as the name of the plane.

We hope you enjoy this very unique Mod Tech Monday video!
