An EPO foam model with a vintage balsa look. The new Retro series Junior from Durafly® ™ brings to the hobby the world's first truly 'Plug and Fly' model of a classic 'Vintage' design.  The Junior comes with all the benefits and convenience of a modern day electric powered model while capturing perfectly the essence of early radio controlled model flight. With its charismatic outline, beautifully simulated 'built up construction' and classic finish, the Junior allows you to experience all the pleasures of owning and flying an old timer. However, unlike traditional built up models upon which it is based, construction time has been reduced to an absolute minimum thanks to the Plug and fly nature of the Junior and its full use of modern day materials, most notably EPO.

This retro series model (like the Pioneer before it), comes with all electronics, control horns and push rods pre-installed and all components pre-assembled. No glue is provided, as none is needed! The Junior simply bolts/screws together, being ready for flight in just a matter of minutes. The undercarriage comes pre-assembled and features authentic oversized wheels. The 1100mm span wing comes in two halves out of the box, that when assembled can also break down quickly for transporting if need be. The tail plane is secured cleanly to the fuselage using just four screws. Battery and servos are easily accessible through the high quality plastic molded battery hatch of the fuselage. The cowl is made from the same high quality plastic and houses the perfectly matched DST-1100 brushless outrunner that swings an included 8x6 propeller. A 20amp ESC uses XT60 connectors and is pre-installed. For that final aesthetic touch of realism, rubber wing bands and a dummy diesel engine cylinder head are also included to complete the look.

In the air, the Junior is very true to its vintage/old timer heritage. She is easy to fly and does so very gracefully and with a great deal of added charm too. Due to the high level of dihedral in the wing the Junior is inherently stable at slower speeds and will benefit from minimal aileron input throughout the flight. In fact, cruising around at little more than 1/4 throttle and with the use of the rudder and elevator alone, will result not only in a very authentic flying experience, but a very pleasurable one. The Junior is every bit the free flight model in design, and as such, will virtually fly itself in the right conditions. In addition to this, with its very low current draw and need for only low throttle inputs, you can expect flight times in excess of 20 minutes with a fully charged 1300mah 3S lipo. That said, If you wish to push the Junior, open up the throttle and with increased stick inputs she will perform basic aerobatic maneuvers.

With the Retro series Junior, you'll be rewarded with an extremely relaxing model to both build and fly, with all the levels of quality, ease of assembly and value you've come to love from Durafly® ™. The Junior is without doubt the most charming model yet in the range, and every time you fly her you'll be reminded why.

Follow up from my first review. If I could give this plane 10 stars I would. I have had zero problems with this little gem and I fly it almost daily when the weather is good. This weekend I will finish up my LED installations and try out some night flying now that it is almost summer. I highly recommend this plane for anyone. I have since trimmed it to fly in a large left pattern, and I can throttle it back to just under half stick, and walk away. I had to test it out, so I walked into my shop, got a fresh beverage and my smokes. Walked back outside, looked at the plane, went back in opened my beverage, then lit my smoke, walked back outside, and smoked my whole cigarette and had half a beverage with out as much as touching the radio! if you need it to, this plane will fly it's self with no gyro's or any other modifications. Just like the free flight design it was created from.

I also bought this little floater when it was on a clearance sale. It showed up undamaged and I had it assembled, trimmed, and in the air in less than 2 hours. My maiden flight went well considering the winds were gusty at about 7-13 knots and it was bumpy air all around. I used way too much control throws but it helped with the conditions. The only issues I encountered was the grass in my back field was a little high for this light plane and the final touch and go removed the landing gear plastic mount. Only the glue let loose which was minimally applied and I had no problems re-gluing it with contact cement. The next day was more suited for this plane with light winds. I was able to get over 20 minute flight times by floating it around and doing touch and goes. The plane right know is just a hair tail heavy but I have added no weight and it does just fine. I love this aircraft already and it is a very good quality PNF. Adjust and rig it for very small control throws, especially the Rudder as it has some serious authority over the aircraft, and have fun all afternoon with this forgiving floater. It is capable of big lazy loops and with a lot of yaw it will do large rolls. Highly recommended aircraft for beginners to pro's!

This is a total joy to fly. I am a relatively new to the hobby and unfortunately I have crashed this a bit, but it is robust, easily repaired and flys like a floating dream! It is so nice to put in the air and float. I have been getting 15 - 20 minutes of good flight time (I glide a lot) on the 1300 3S stopping at 3.8 V a cell.

This is one of my favorite models. If I were to damage it beyond repair I would buy another. Hell, I may do that anyway because it is such a good looker, but only after I purchase the Durafly "Das Ugly Stick" from the Retro Series!

Thanks Hobby King and Durafly - Are there any other planes to come in the Retro Series?

I love this plane. It came beautifully packaged no damage what so ever even though
the outer shipping box looked like it had been dragged down the road on a rope.
assembly was quick and very easy, instruction book clear with good pictures. it even came with its own screwdriver and wrench extra prop and rubber bands to, though they are just for looks as the wing bolts on. Anyway Maiden voyage was flawless with very small trim adjustments. took a little more space on take off then I expected, flys just like the video and landed rolled to a stop pretty as a picture.

2nd try to get a review to post. Wanted to indicate that my Junior is a real disappointment. Under powered and difficult to steer; it will not take off ROG (rolling on ground). I like all my airplanes to take off from the ground. Hand launching works, but in the air Junior does not fly much better than it takes off. It feels very "heavy, and drops altitude like a stone with moderate power when the wings are banked. I think the down of the motor is excessive on this model, and it needs a tail wheel to improve its directional stability during the take off roll. I will be experimenting with the motor down angle, different props and a tail wheel. If I can improve these characteristics I will post again. As is, I can only give this two stars. It would have been only one for its flying characteristics, but I gave it an extra because it does look pretty good!

I ordered this one during HK's Spring sale, and couldn't be more pleased. This is exactly what I expected in terms of flying characteristics, assembly, and overall quality. HK;s Arkansas warehouse had the plane to me in about 3-4 days, and it was well packaged, with no damage. The quality of the parts looks really good, with all electronics working perfectly. Assembly was a breeze, I used an Orange R615 receiver which fit perfectly in the space provided. There is plenty of room for the 1300mAH 3 cell battery forward in the hatch, and I did not add any additional weight. I did add a fair amount of "down" trim on the initial flight, but what a joy to fly. She just floats in the air, nice and slow, and touch and goes are a snap. She will do loops, but they aren't what you might call really pretty round loops unless you drop the nose and get some speed up before trying it. But I really bought this plane just to putter around the sky and do some nice, relaxing flying in the retro tradition, and that is what this one is made to do. Just looks good in the air with the dummy engine, and the ghosted structure on the fuselage. Extremely easy to fly. If you want some no stress flying, try this guy out, you won't be disappointed.
