The Ugly Stick design has been a popular nitro sports model for almost half a century and this iconic airframe is known throughout the RC world for its exceptional flight characteristics and charming yet simple lines

With the Durafly Ugly Stick, you too can experience what made this design a classic, 20~30 years ago it would have taken months to build an Ugly Stick from balsa but not now. Then it would take hours of voodoo magic to make the motor run for an oily and noisy 10 minutes. Not anymore! This RC foam plane can be flying in a fraction of the time with minimal building, no tuning, no cleaning!

This electric (PNF) RC plane comes with all electronics pre-installed, all major components assembled for you, and a full complement of tools and accessories are included. The Ugly Stick V2 bolts and screws together in just a few easy steps, multiple access hatches also allow for easy access to all internal electronics.

The V1 was designed and built around the popular 2200mAh 3S LiPo battery, the V2 has slightly more room in the battery compartment and does require extra nose weight so we recommend a Graphene Panther 3000mAh 3S or similar pack (even then it may require some additional ballast in the nose). The V2 also is supplied with an upgraded powerful 3536 900kV electric motor, Durafly 30amp programmable speed controller, and 4 good quality 9g servos. The V2 also sports a new hi-viz blue color scheme that looks stunning on the ground and in the air.

The Durafly Ugly Stick V2 not only looks as good as the original but flies just as well too, perfectly capturing those excellent flight qualities of which the Ugly Stick was renowned. Being the well-mannered RC sports model it is, the Ugly Stick is suitable for both beginner and experienced flyers alike. At the lower end of the speed range, it exhibits no bad stall tendencies and can be flown comfortably at half throttle if desired. However, when you wish to experience its true flying capabilities, open the throttle wide and the Ugly Stick will oblige, performing a full range of sport aerobatic maneuvers with the ease that made the original so popular. Due to the low current draw of the Ugly Stick V2 power system, you can also enjoy longer than average flying times with mixed power use.

With this latest version, you’ll be rewarded with an extremely well balanced and enjoyable sports model in the air and a great conversation piece on the ground, thanks to the ultra-high level of design and authenticity Durafly has achieved with the Ugly Stick Version 2.

Easy to Fly

Jul 21, 2022

This plane was inexpensive but lacks quality in manufacturing. The use of plastic/foam materials leads to failures due to the way the landing gear is attached to the fuse. First landing the landing gear broke free and require gluing it back This repair failed again so I added a block of 1/4" ply glued to the fuse and added an additional screw to the metal landing gear for better attachment. Since this modification I have had no more issues. I recommend that if this plane is kept in production that the landing gear area be beefed up with a more solid attachment point. Several others in my flying club with this plane have had similar issues and made the same modification I made. For the money it is a fun little plane to fly.

Great second aircraft

Jul 17, 2022

This is a great second airplane. Cheap, flies great, capable, parts available. I installed a Spektrum AR631 because I wanted the same options I had on my first plane (apprentice sts) and I wanted my daughter to be able to transition up to this as well.
It handles the wind very well. Here along the central California coast it is always windy and I routinely fly this plane up to 18 to 20 mph winds. The main downsides are the same as others have mentioned. The paint peels off easily. If I have some sunscreen residue on my hands, I will have little blue specks on my hands after I handle it. The other drawback is the landing gear mounting. It will rip out pretty easily. I drilled the mounting out with a quarter in drill bit all the way up through the plywood plate. I then created a backer plate made out of 3 PVC cards super glued together. Think hotel key cards. I then bolted the gear on with quarter inch nylon bolts. The bolts come up from the bottom, through the aluminum landing gear frame, through the PVC backer, through the fuselage, and then through the plywood on the inside. Topped off with a flat washer, lock washer, and a nut. No issues ever since and I have hundreds of flights on this plane. The original wooden prop broke just from taxiing when I hit a clump of grass. I put on a tougher prop and haven't changed since. The battery access is a little small so a normal length 2200 is difficult to get into I use the Ovonic 2200 batteries as they are a little shorter. Overall a great flier and I recommend.

Too Soon to Tell

Jul 17, 2022

I received the plane for Father’s Day and assembly went pretty well and then the problem came along. When I got ready to install the prop I noticed the prop washer was missing and could not tighten the prop without it. When I started setting up the radio I found the esc was getting hot with no load on it. I contacted customer support and it was authorized quickly on 6/21 since then no word from anyone including doing the char support who told me I would be contacted when it shipped. It is now 7/16 and nothing, so if you ask me how it flies, I have no clue since a couple of the basic parts are not there. I have heard the main landing gear should be reinforced and the tail wheel needs to be reversed to keep from restricting the elevator throw. So this is my review thus far. Very disappointed with customer care and hope to be flying it one day.

A delightful classic Stik. Flies beautifully.

Jun 13, 2022

Great airplane as all Stiks are. However, the landing gear attachment is very weak and pops out of the foam on even a slightly rough landing. Had to beef it up with plywood.

Great mid -size Stik. Flies like other Stiks. The only foam one available, However, the plastic block that holds the landing gear on is too weak and easily breaks off during even a slightly hard landing. We had to beef things up with plywood to secure things again.

An excellent plane

Jun 09, 2022

I had the earlier built-up version, which was OK, but this one is much better. A super plane.
However, I did modify it slightly (probably not necessary).
I upgraded the ESC to 40A and installed an APC 12x6 propeller.
In this configuration, it's a great, great sport plane. I love it!
For those who like a laugh, read the instruction manual.
In the "Troubleshooting" section, it says that "if the plane moves backwards, it's because you've installed the propeller back to front"!!!
That's ridiculous! Whoever wrote that doesn't have the slightest idea of propeller workings! The instructions appear fairly generic, so that ridiculous error may exist for other planes as well...
Durafly and/or HK should correct that. The purpose of instructions isn't to show the author's ignorance!
But mine is a GREAT flier!
