The Fly Baby is a homebuilt, single-seat, open-cockpit, wood and fabric low-wing monoplane that was designed by famed United States aircraft designer Peter M. Bowers. It is by all accounts one of the simplest homebuilt airplane designs and has proven to be a very reliable and economical aircraft to own. Its low maintenance costs and fuel economy make it a favorite amongst many home builders and enthusiasts.

Just like the full-size, our 1400mm Fly Baby is simple to build, great to look at, economical to own and a real joy to fly. With features such as the molded plastic engine cylinders and cowl, the scale undercarriage with large shock-absorbing tires, detailed single seat cockpit, large wooden propeller and sprung rigging wire, this model really looks the part!

The airframe is constructed from ultra-durable EPO foam with carbon fiber spars in both the wing and horizontal stab. This makes for a very rigid and strong airframe. The aileron control rods are ball-linked offering precise control and easy adjustment. The steerable tail wheel is sprung which offers shock absorption and excellent ground handling.

Being "Plug and Fly", the servos and power system are all pre-installed. The servos are digital with metal gears, while the 4S brushless power system provides great performance and flight times. You will simply need to add your own lipoly battery and radio system.

The Fly Baby can be ready to fly within 15 minutes of opening the box thanks to its clever design. The wing simply bolts on as well as the undercarriage and tail assembly. The rigging wire are pre-made and simply require clipping in place.

• "Plug and Fly", simply add your own radio system and battery

I got this on a HK flash sale for $101.00, I took a chance on it. Glad I got it. I must have got a good one, Other then the rudder hinge was torn, This is a very nice plane. I repainted the weird violet- blue to True blue, added a pilot, It flys rather fast, I am using 50pcnt throws on low rates, 40pcnt expo, And it is still really responsive at 50pcnt throttle.I think it is way to fast on full throttle, And I am a very experienced flyer. I am really happy with it, flys great off a grass field. I am using a Admiral 4s 3600 battery, It works just fine for me, And yes this is a heavy plane, If you do not know how to fly right, this plane may not be for you. Just sayin'.

I have been trying to rate this plane as a 3, but the system rejects my posts so I am falsely rating it a 4 to see what happens. I also am minimizing my post. The plane flies fine in the air and will do all normal aerobatics. And it looks great. On takeoff it needs full right rudder. All the weight of the plane is from the axel forward and the necessary 4 S 2650 ma battery adds to this which results in the plane having a tendency to flip even when the touchdown is perfect. You can adjust the CG by sliding the batter forward and backward, but the wheels are mounted too close to the wing and that you can't change.

Overall this is a excellent plane. Mine arrived with one of the aileron hinges completely torn. My success with customer service has not been very good so I repaired the hinge with Welders Glue. The most interesting part is the box contained no manual of any kind, and there is none available on line.
If HobbyKing wants to become a real competitor in the market, they need to step of their quality control. A simple check for a manual or providing one online is a simple step that makes the difference between a satisfied customer and a disappointed one.
I just had to figure out which screws went in which location. Overall quality was good and the plane is much like its original design.
RC groups provided the CG information, which I guess in wrong in the non existent manual.
Set the CG at 60mm and placed the Nanotech 4S 2650 mah battery all the way forward, and the plane balanced correctly. The receiver was placed just ahead of the elevator and rudder servos.
HobbyKing could be a great company with just a bit more attention to customers. These products are generally a good value, but they are not cheap so don't make them into that.

This is the worst plane I have ever owned. it is so weak that nose over in short grass taxing out to the strip saw the tail section snap off and the fuse snap in two places near where the flying wires attach.... repaired and flown it fly's like a homemade failure and the c of g was at 60mm

Great Plane, Went together well apart from the smaller screws rounding off, 2 for the tail wheel are stuck halfway in, also the blue on the engine cover and windscreen is a completly different shade of blue to rest of plane, will have to re-spray it to make it look half decent. But nice looking plane.

Nice plane, more importantly it flies well. No issues with delivery from International warehouse. No issues with assembly, don't mind the extra time to secure flying wires, they look cool. I have many flights with stock setup, takes off nice and straight with half throttle and with proper D\R will loop, roll and do standard aerobatics at a little past 1/2 throttle. Likes a bit of throttle on landing, but no surprises. Only dings against it is a rather dull looking paint scheme, and gear could be a bit more stout for the size and weight of the plane. One of my favorite planes in this size, good job on this one HK.

What a beautiful plane, nice quality but not so strong!
First time in the air and a wing broke in a roll, the pending crash not pretty, looking every where for parts!! Any ideas?

bonjour tous,

First of all: it flys ok.
But the model is totally overweight. The developers missed this most important point about building a foam model. In fact, the model is HEAVIER than a Wood model with gas Motor of the same built size.
Loose at least 1/2 kg and it would be a good scale Flyer that wouldn't Need a 4S battery to make it fly way faster than scale.
Try again, but LOOSE the overweight!

Fantastic! Plane arrived in its usual well packed form, easy assembly. I fly at a grass field quite bumpy so take offs and landings can be difficult, but not for this bird. The fly baby had no problems and looked fantastic in the air and on the ground. Plenty of power for those tricks and turns we like to do and so much grace when doing the slowest of fly byes. I can't understand the Nay Sayers on this one, great plane HK !
