Lots of fun

Jun 12, 2021

With a 3S 1500 50C, this plane hovers at half throttle.
Great, relaxing fun.
Glued on a piece of a bamboo skewer on the bottom of the rear skid for protection.
Excellent value.

Pretty good 3D plane for the price, do some mods to improve it

Mar 01, 2021

First of all, here's what I loaded it with ( I wish more people would post this)
Turnigy aerodrive D2830/11 1000kv
10x4.7 slowfly prop on a collet style spinner
HK 30A UBEC with 5v/3A BEC
Zippy 25C 1000mAh 3s Lipo
4x HXT900 9g servos
OrangeRX GR400F FASST Receiver and a Futaba 6EX TX
Used BSI foam-cure foam glue for 90% of the assembly and hot-glue for some reinforcements
Performance:
With my setup, it will do vertical climb-outs at full throttle, and hover at about 2/3 throttle. I suspect going up to a 4s would improve performance. Flies straight where you point it, capable of tight snappy rolls, requires experience if you give it high rate throws. With low rate throws it's totally controllable, but keep in mind that this ain't a trainer and it won't right itself after a bank - it goes exactly where you point it and no where else.
Build tips:
DONT USE THE LANDING GEAR! They won't work. Flimsy as heck. Just belly land it.
Throw out the paper hinges and use some nylon pinned hinges. Much more accurate
control movements.
Most important thing for accurate flight - the included carbon fiber rods are not great. I highly highly recommend beefing up the wing spars, here's how I did that: take some 1/16" thick balsa strips, I think about 1/4" wide. Widen and deepen the carbon fiber rod slot slightly on one side, I did the top side. Be careful not to cut the wing in half though, it didn't need much trimming for the balsa to fit. After the two wing halves are joined, insert this balsa strip into your slot tacky with BSI foam-cure. You now have a much stiffer wing that will handle G-loading much better.
Supposedly if you don't stiffen up the wing similar to this the wings will flop in flight, especially in tight pull-ups. I haven't had an issue with the balsa strip, it's pretty stiff. I also still had space to insert one of the carbon rods in the bottom side, again wet with glue.
That's about it. Probably the cheapest most usable foamy you can get. But you do need to help it out a bit as described to make it a nice plane.

Prop/motor warning

Jun 01, 2020

The recommended prop/motor combination for this model are a 1000Kv motor driving a 10x4.7 slow fly prop with a 3S battery.
The motor/battery combination will give approx 10000rpm, however APC slow fly props are only rated to 65000/prop diameter so for a 10 inch prop that's 6500rpm.
I have been flying this combination for a few months now and recently checked the prop to find stress cracks near the hub. On further investigation (i.e gentle flexing) one of the blades bent just like Uri Geller's spoon and dropped off! It couldn't have been more than a few minutes away from dropping off in flight with associated vibration/destruction.I have now fitted a standard 10x5 APC E prop which seems fine and is rated to 15000rpm for a 10 inch prop so hopefully no more problems!
