Good little sound meter, fairly accurate. It doesn't pick up sub 50hz well but for everything else it is great. I bought it at a great price on a sale for $10. I wouldn't pay much more than $15 unless it picked up the full spectrum or had some sort of nice carry case.

This is a nice toy. Five stars only because of the price and because everything else would be unfair.

I am a professional in sound level measurements using equipment from Sinus, Bruehl & Kjaer, Cel etc. for many thousand Euros.

I was interested in this toy and compared it to extremely expensive measuring equipment / sound level meters by Bruehl & Kjaer and Cel, and used their (also extremely expensive, severyl thousand Euros) calibrators for comparison (to get a sound of exactly defined frequency and sound pressure level).

The Hobbyking SPL meter was surprisingly good and exact in the low dB ranges - from about 40 - 50 dBA, the discrepancy to the other meters, several hundret times more expensive, was negligible, < 1 dB (we also have those discrepancies often when using more than one sound level meter, even of the same brand and exactly same type - sound pressure level measurement is extremely difficult).

But in the higher dB ranges the discrepancies increased, already around 5 dB in the 70 dB range and > 100 dB the discrepancy was around 11 dB.

Anyway, this is a nice toy.

Of course you can only measure dBA (dBA scale is the sound pressure curve adapted to human hearing), and no dB L/Z etc.

Calibration does not work in the > 100 dB range (I used a calibrator with 114 dBA at 1 kHz), so I "calibrated" it comparing it to a freshly calibrated professional SPL meter.

Anyway, extremely cheap price, nice toy, recommended. But dont stuck on the exact values this SPL meter

I use it for some measurements in my home, not at the field. :-)) A mens toy must be oily and loud:-)) No need to measure. If your plane is oud enough, you will hear it anyway, no need for such tool:-))

A nice, handy little sound level meter and very good for the price. MAX reading is handy. I would give it a higher rating if it had AVG and could different weightings. But handy to have to find out how loud your plane really is. But still worth it for the price

I bought this unit not really thinking I would ever use it, but boy, was I wrong! This small unit really comes in handy when the cops show up and say your making too much noise! Just pull out the old sound meter and prove your case, problem solved! I think it has saved me from a public noise ticket, which has more than paid for itself right there. It's worth it. The unit is very well constructed, and feels heavy in the hand, like you have quality in your hands. And it appears to be quite accurate in it's noise detecting. Screen is clearly visable, so even if your blind you could read it. I say, purchase one, you never know when you'll need it. I know!
