Nothing quite compares to the simplicity of taking just a model and transmitter out to the local park for a couple of hours of flying fun. Discus launched gliders (DLGs) are a truly fascinating branch of the hobby as well as being a totally absorbing way to learn all about finding and using the tiny pockets of lift to be found low down.

The HobbyKing Raven 990 is a lightweight, mini DLG for pilots looking for a high-performing entry-level model. All of the main components are supplied ready-built so that assembly time is minimal and the small size of the Raven 990 makes it easy to transport and store.

Fully built-up, open construction is used for all flying surfaces with carbon fiber spars and reinforcement where required, all beautifully shown off by the transparent red iron-on covering film. The fuselage is a pod and boom design with a high-impact, transparent equipment pod, and lightweight spiral wound carbon fiber boom to give maximum strength exactly where needed

Following the latest thinking in DLG design, the Hobbyking Raven 990 is rudderless and has a super-lightweight pull-operated elevator with a spring return. Full span ailerons each have their own servo to give excellent control authority and the option of flaperons if your radio allows, to give even more control over your flight profile, with the launch, cruise, thermal and landing modes becoming available at the flick of a switch. The supplied throwing peg can be configured for either right or left-handed throwers.

Needing just a suitable receiver and battery (see related items for suggestions) the Raven 990 can be ready to go in as little as 30 minutes, so why not join the ever-growing DLG crowd today?

In the words of the great Dave Thornburg; "You'll learn more about finding lift below 50ft altitude than you ever will above it..."

Features:
• Excellent build quality
• Lightweight plastic fuselage pod
• Preinstalled servos (elevator and one for each aileron)
• Pre-built balsa wing and tail surfaces
• Easy assembly (approx. 30mins)

Needs work

Feb 07, 2022

Lovely plane let down by poor servos (one failed after less than 1 hr), and the elevator control system is poorly conceived. Once I replace it with a pull-pull system and decent servos (which won't be straightforward), it will be a great flyer.

Poor

Apr 06, 2021

Wing twisted needing about 8mm of aileron to trim out. same with the vertical tail plane, so always trying to yaw left leaving a poor performing glider with all this extra drag. Has great potential though

gutes Modell mit großen Schwächen

Feb 12, 2021

Entry point to DLG

Jan 25, 2021

The Raven 990 is a nice little plane that will introduce you to a reasonably "true DLG experience" at a relatively low price point. You know, carbon fiber DLGs are quite expensive and you may not even consider flying one at these prices, and here the Raven has a point. I don't like the fact that this plane is a certainly fragile (that boom...) and Hobbyking does not carry spares at all, so this makes this plane almost "disposable". The covering of the ailerons is notoriously wrinkled (many users mention this), and it is simply impossible to get this plane below 180 grams so it will not be so floaty... but as mentioned it still provides a "quasi-real" DLG experience.

raven 990 mm ailerons proplhem

Dec 14, 2019

beautiful build nice finish. only problem was the servos , they could not move the ailerons as the hinging was far to stiff, so iv cut 1 in3 hinge points as each wing has about 15 tabs on it.now the aileron moves freely

Raven 990mm

Sep 10, 2019

The Raven 990 is a great model Itwant together very simple the one cell battery is perfect for it. my six channel receiver works really good with it the only problem after setting everything up the next time I hooked up the one cell battery up the two Aileronon servos both burned out had to replace both servos and I still have not been able to go out to fly it since I replaced the servo. And for the price of this aircraft. That should not have happened. So soon.

Received the plane very quickly from USA warehouse. Nice assembly and tight covering. Canopy pod seems very delicate and hold down tabs brake easley.

Nice plane, but tail boom is fragile and anything more than extreme gentle landing will break it.

Jul 06, 2019

First and foremost, the CG on the plans really didn't work for me. It says 80mm from the leading edge if I correctly understood the plans. Well, several hard landings and a cracked boom later I have found that about 1 Cm forward of that (about 70mm) from the leading edge, allowed me to actually fly the plane.
The wing and front canopy design are great, but the tail boom and cable mechanism are really bad. You have a small, tightly drawn nylon cable for the elevator control, but the hole it comes out of in the boom is rough carbon fiber, which is a disaster just waiting to happen. My cable unsurprisingly snapped after a couple flights.
I replaced that with a pushrod system on the side that was far more robust.
The boom is made of very thin carbon fiber, and while very light and stiff, it cracks easily. Even moderate landings on grass will create cracks in it from where the tail connects, to where the wing is attached. On closer inspection, I now have cracks all over the place and will probably just make a new boom from scratch.
Basically the only suitable place to land this plane is in very high grass, which is ridiculous.
If you buy this plane I would:
1. Immediately replace the nylon string set up with a sleeved pushrod on the side of the boom (you can take out the elevator spring too which makes it easier for the servo). Also tie a small string around the rear of the boom and glue it there to prevent splitting of the vertical stab down the boom.
2. Test the CG forward of the 80mm, on hand toss throws on a shallow hill on tall grass.
3. Land in tall grass every time.
